That "I am going to hurt myself" feeling

Whenever I am about to go big or try a new trick, i get these horrible thoughts in my mind right as i am about to hit it. like that i will definitely break my leg doing this, or i am going to land on my head." and these thoughts make me pussy out half the time. Any tips on how to man the fuck up?

don't think about fucking up.


just voluntarily tell yourself you'll land the trick. tell yourself to stop being a pussy if you have to. the first time i ever learned 3's i had nobody there to pressure me to do it, so as i was approaching the jump i'd literally say to myself "you fucking pussy just throw the damn 3"

and that's how i learned it.


it definitely helps if you have others there to pressure you. sometimes i'll just be like "fuck it, i'm gonna die" out loud. that usually loosens up the mood before i guinea pig some urban or some stupid backyard setup haha

I usually only get that feeling when I'm in the air upside down and I've stalled out. Nothing worse than stalling out mid air while staring up at the sky.


Had an interesting one the other day. Was trying to get to this cliff but the path in is a bit... interesting (think steep, lots of ledges and trees all in the wrong spots). Made it most of the way to the cliff but before I was in the clear of the shnarb my nose hooked on a rock ever so slightly causing me to do the old downhill roll off a ledge. I didn't really know what was below me, all I knew as there was this tree down there that I didn't want to hit (and maybe some rock? I didn't know!). After one roll I managed to get to my feet facing downhill and reactively pointed it out of this little chute in the rocks into the bowl below without hitting anything. Got the heart going for sure.

Get cocky. Not to the point where your a dick to everybody, but just so where you think you can land anything you try. I do this and it's helped me progress a lot.

try not to think of consequences. you telling yourself that you're going to get hurt isn't necessarily YOU being a pussy, it's your sneaky bastard of a brain trying to keep you from being awesome.just don't think about it. honestly, yolo is actually pretty to the point (i hate myself for saying it). you DO only live once, so why not just do it and see what happens? good luck mang

I find that the less you think. The better things turn out. If you just go completely blank minded and just do it, it will come naturally without any complications. Thats just me i know some people work differently.

It really helps me to put on some pump-up music. You gotta hit the jump and not let the jump hit you. Make it your bitch. If I start to get butterflies and nervous before I hit the jump or rail, I generally eat shit.

this is very true in all aspects of life


in soccer we used to do this drill where two players were somewhat stationary, they could move left and right but not forward and backward. a third player tried to dribble down the alleyway, through the first defender, then through the second.


if you made it past the first, you became more confident (especially if you put a sick move on him), and then you were SO much more likely to make it past the second. it was crazy. nearly everytime the player with the ball would go 0 for 2 or 2 for 2.


that being said, when im in a jump line and trying something new, i spin some smooth fucking threes as i approach the jump that i'm gonna send a new trick off of. it builds your confidence.

I had this problem last year and this year I've more or less gotten rid of it.

Just think of all the positives, not the negatives.  And you just gotta go for it, that's my mentality.  Even if you don't get close, but you commit, it's going to boost your confidence soooo much, making your next attempt so much easier.  Also having a older brother right next to you screaming at you to just do it helps!

But like these other seasoned pros above said, it's all about confidence dude!

Rule of thumb, if you think its gonna hurt, dont do it. Work up the big tricks. When you will feel confident, you will be ready.

When I'm pussing out, my friends always start telling the other guys at the top of the jumpline what I'm trying to do. They'll be like "Hey this kid (point to me) is gonna 9! Watch this shit!" and at that point I can't pussy out cuz too many people are watching and I dont want them to think I'm a little bitch

When i learned my first flip i got pressured into it by my friends who could already do it, but really i knew i would be able to i was just scared. So i would say get some positive peer pressure going, maybe some pump up music like someone said and just have a positive mindset, as in just thinking over in your head "i will land this" and you'll be set.
