The deficit means nothing. Much of the debt is owed to the American people through the sale of bonds. If the gov't wants money they sell bonds, which in turn stimulates the economy since they are tradeable and people usually (but not always) profit from them.

In the last two years the DOW has increased 3000 points and unemployment is down to 5.4%...so please keep beleiving the media spin and people like anewmorning and myself will enjoy a market that has shown, and continues to show, bullish tendencies.

Uh, yes the debt means something, you can't just print out money and then pay for cheeseburgers. Money has to have value, so we're eventually going to have to pay for it sometime, and its going to be within our lifetimes. That means giant cuts somewhere, so enjoy it now, get ready to pay for it once we have a compitent government that thinks about the future.

Anyway, whoever implied that social security is out the window with bush... Come on folks, in the debates, Kerry said flat out he didnt see a problem with the social security system. Bush is pushing for allowing young people to put away a portion of their social security money away for their own use when they retire. In other words, I may be able to see some of the money I have pumped into the system instead of throwing money at something that wont be there for me.

I love how he drops down to calling the democrats 'fags' after they have made irrefutable points that infact prove his position to be wrong. We all know bush is a moron, we all know he's not good for the economy, employment, environment, the world, etc. Yet by being a skier you automatically have to revere the environment and be a conscious american. Look at bush's cut backs on the EPA and how he's rolling back restrictions on greenhouse gas emissions... Restrictions that clinton put in place. ALSO, look at the tax cut given to the richest 1% of americans; 87 billion dollars.. Think about all the poor people that are starving, dying, homeless, jobless, and other situations that NOBODY on this fucking webiste has ever endured, yet instead of giving the 87 billion to the poor and to help MILLIONS of people get out of poverty, GEORGE W BUSH gives it to his friends, the CEO's. 'Hehe, look what we have here, the haves and the have more's. Some people call you 'the eliete,' I call you my base.'- George W. and yeah, of fucking course deficits matter. the gov't borrows money from the people (bonds) and can't pay it back, so they borrow more, causing a deficit. but at the same time, everyone's preaching the whole lower your taxes shit. good job. so why not just print more money to pay it off and run the worth of the american dollar right into the ground? gov't spending needs to be lowered, greatly. but the good ol' war's really helping that subject out eh?
why'd the war start again? it was those damned terrorists and wmds in iraq, right? yeah. good job guys, keep that one going.

i just hope bush gets his fucking head on straight and doesn't keep playing solely into the conservative republican's hands. as the leader of the country, you're there to fit the needs of every citizen in the country.
not just the ones that are voting for you, and/or filling your pockets with campaign donations.

Ok, I'll try and not stereotype republicans, but it seems a lot of you think democrats dont care about 9/11. I do. I shouldn't even have to go into how tragic it was and the loss America felt that day. But we have lost our direction on the war against the people who did it. Osama bin Laden was the person responsible for 9/11, and there still isnt any proof that there is a link between Osama and Saddam, or between Saddam and the hijackers, except for them all being Middle Eastern.

Point being: Democrats do care, and dont brush 9/11 off. Nobody could ever brush that off. But just because we were attacked shouldn't mean that our country can go to hell at home while we fight a war somewhere. Our economy is more important than the war because its the US economy that gives our people prosperity, gives power to our buisinesses and makes the Kevlar that our soldiers wear. Thats why our homeland being stable is more important than a war that half our country agrees with, at least to me.

No matter what either of these candidates do they could NOT lower the deficit at all with the plans proposed. How the fuck would Kerry have done everything he wanted while lowering taxes...it's not possible. The deficit will always be there. It grows by billions per day just from the functions of the government.

The economy was good when Clinton was in office because he did not fuck with it. Think about what was going on while he was in office. E-commerce boom sound familiar? He let all the internet up start companies drive the economy through the roof. He did nothing and that was the absolute perfect thing to do. Bush caught the aftermath of the internet decline, then 9/11. Nothing could be done to save the economy while this was going on. He did the right thing by lowering interest rates to stimulate the economy. Market collapse, then a tragic event tend to not make a lot of folks rush out to make more major purchases.

Ski8990: do you know what causes a depression? What has to happen for anything to be considered a depression? By definition, it won't happen again. As long as Greenspan is working, no way. They guy is an economic genious. He guided Clinton through his booming economy and is guiding Bush through is recovering one.

The comment about social security: This has nothing to do with Bush. He wants to privitize SS, meaning, you won't have to rely on what the generation behind you is paying into your retirement fund. The reason SS is disappearing is because of your grandparents. Ever hear of the Baby Boom? That is the problem. They could fix it, but it would mean more money out of your paycheck every time. Then you would bitch about having so much taken out. Do yourself a favor and research better ways to save for retirement. SS doesn't pay shit anyway.

I am so sick of the stereotypes of Republicans and Democrats. Judge the comment on the person making it, not on what tehy believe politically. What the hell does it matter what party they identify with, unless they are being told so say everything based on the ideal thoughts of each party.

Farenheit 9/11 should not have swayed any votes, if it did, those who voted based on that movie are sheep who believe any form of controversial propaganda and gossip placed before them. Moore makes amazing use of his resources by poking at open wounds, and nerves to build emotional pity for those involved. He's damn good at it, but that doesn't make it true. He twists facts, leaves out parts of quotes to make them sound the opposite of what they are. Again, damn good at it. Watch some of his other movies. If you are a hunter or gun owner, watch Bowling for columbine, then tell everyone how you feel about him. Watch his first film, Bob and Me, and tell me how much you hate GM for wanting to make money.

Bush won, Electoral College, and Popular Vote. That's it, done. Kerry's speech was great, and shows he is much more of a man than Gore was. Gore cried recount, Kerry gave the speech of a rational man, and accepted defeat. Props to Kerry for his ability to be a gracious in defeat.

Depression or recession? What happened in the great depression is unlikley to happen again we know a lot more about economics than we did back then. Thats why all stock trading was suspended following 9/11. We know how to boost economy by increasing federal spending. we were learning about the great depression in econ last night and my professor knows his shit and thinks it's nearly impossible knowing what we do now to slip into a situation like we did in the 1920's. Let alone the stock market crash wasn't the only contributing factor. The moons were aligned perfectly for the great depression to take place. It had a lot to do with banking investments in real-estates instead of a stratified portfolio. Thats why the Federal Reserve Bank didnt LOLR out a lot of these little banks because they were bad for the business. The great depression although was bad at the time really made our economy stronger through the knowledge we gained and the policies implemented.

I fail to see the point in bringing soldiers into any argument anymore. You sign up VOLUNTARILY. There are inherent dangers in anything you do. Being a soldier and fighting for your country is dangerous, but no one has been forced into the military for quite some time. It's sad to see our men dying, but most fighting there have more patriotism in their pinky finger than a lot people will ever have in thier life.

Funny how u mention clinton and the economy becuz the economy struggled under clinton until 1994 when Newt and all the other republicans took over the house and senate. Even with that the market was trending towards recesion regardless of who won in 2000 so shut up about bush desroying the economy.

first of all, you use socialists like it's a derogatory term. what's wrong with socialism?

secondly, no i dont think that kerry would have fixed the deficit. no one could fix the deficit in one term. but i know if we have bush in office, the deficit definitely isn't comin down at all. i'm puttin my money on it going up, a lot. if it's true that dick cheney said 'deficits don't matter', i really don't want someone so financially irresponsible in office making financial decisions for the country.

The funny thing about the deficit is that it doesn't really effect the economy except when it's owned by foreign governments and/or corporations. If you pay attention to world economics you'll know that China is currently using much of its trade surplus with the United-States to purchase American Bonds. This is what is worrying for the future healt of the economy.

Okay, for one, I'd like to say just one thing. If the war is such an important topic why don't we all look into a few things. It has no connection with the terrorist attacks. Saddam had nothing to do with the terrorists. We harbored more of the bin Laden family than Iraq ever did. There were no 'weapons of mass destruction'. That's for sure. All we did was eliminate a rigime that we didn't like. We just had half ass excuses. Why don't we just go around and attack all countries that are run by heartless dictators.

you want to define it? howabout government controll of assets. correct me if im wrong (evidently i havnt 'done my homework') but the extent of scandanavian socialism still has great vestiges of capitolism, similar to canadian socialism. im not going to label those nations that still have some free enterprise as socialist simply because they have a higher tax rate, or nationalized health care...
