I have just watched 3 edits here on NS where guys are shredding crazy pow by them selfs.. The last guy also does not have safety gear because no backpack..
All those guys are idiots if I may say so..

How hard is it to make friends on a pow day and shred together? Even inbounds shredding deep pow is dangerous if you are all alone.. Nobody knows you are there if things go wrong, and yes things can go wrong real quick! Hit a tree, get stuck in tree well, cliffs, pillows breaking above you and you get burried etc etc etc..

I cant find the edit now, but last year someone posted a good video of how long it can take people to get to you through the pow.. A guy was burried under a shit load of pow when he fell after hitting some pillows.. (if someone knows what I am talking about, please post it here, thanks!)

I know pow is great, and its hard to say no to crazy pow on a free day in the mountains, but just make some new friends, shred together with others and be safe!

I think it'll be much safer if all you guys stay home when there's pow out there... It's just too dangerous and I can't imagine anyone putting themselves in such a dangerous situation. PLEASE stay home and don't risk your life trying to ski pow! Thank you.

You also ski in Utah where the tree wells are far less dangerous. In the Northwest, low tree cover makes for big sketchy tree wells, not to mention avvy slides inbounds...they do happen.

No tree wells here, I love shredding solo, no waiting, no worrying about where they have got too. Fun to have a little crew as well obviously.

Interesting comments..thanks all..

We all take risks, I take risks, but there are a lot of guys out there with 0 to very little knowledge about the risks they take, they are not aware of the things that can happen.. I hope this thread is an eye opener for them..

Some guys here commented they can shred pow safe by them selfs because they use their heads, weigh the risks, I couldnt agree more, I have shred pow by myself, but you have to keep yourself focused..

Oh and thanks to eheath for commenting, without you this thread would never have a 2nd page..

I think the bottom line is, If your going to ski alone you need to be aware of the risks. And if your willing to accept them thats fine. Ive almost lost my life skiing alone. I try to never ski or hike or anything like that alone, because it is much safer in a group. But that being said, if theres pow and i cant find someone to ski with im not going to stay at home. Im taking my life into my hands, its what extreme sports are about.

not sure if someone said this to evan already but a guy died at jackson a few years ago right on the side of the trail, patrol didn't see him on the sweep because he was in a tree well knocked out

one of my close friends fell in a tree well and couldnt breath, and it wasnt even a powder day. Tree wells are for sure really scary. But when im having a sweet powder day the last thing im thinking about is oh no i hope i dont suffocate from all this snow. Just sayin.

It comes down to your perception of risk. I don't see skiing powder as a risky situation. The way it sounds, most of the kids replying in this thread would consider riding a bike down the street with only one hand on the handlebars a significantly risky situation, where as me being a firefighter, gives me a COMPLETLY different view on 'risk'.

If kids here are so scared of snow, perfect, more for me. You keep working on those K-Feds on the flat boxes.

When I was growing up skiing in Ontario the father of these two fellow park rats of mine caught an edge while skiing down a groomer and went head first into a tree on the side of the run. He died and they didn't find his body for some time because it was off the run in the trees a bit.

People shouldn't ski groomers alone. It's dangerous.

Now that I think about it, I read somewhere that there were more toilet related deaths than skiing related deaths in like '98 or something like that. Just to be safe, we should poop in pairs.

Op watched 3 edits and is now qualified to call everyone who skis inbounds pow alone "retarded". I almost always ski with other people but taking a couple of laps alone on a powder day is always fun. Sure its a little dangerous but skiing isn't 100% safe, you have to take some risks.
I'm also guessing that a lot of the people replying to this thread haven't ski very much if any powder. Most inbounds powder is really mellow and safe, powder is super easy to ski if you're at all good or experienced.

My friend yesterday got lost on top of some cliffs on a really foggy day and kept skiing into them and tumbled down a chute off a 30 ft cliff and I can tell you if he wasn't alone that wouldnt have happened

I ski pow all the time with my buddies but after watching lots of these videos I think I'm going to start carrying my pack with shovel and probe even with I'm skiing inbounds pow.

I rarely ski alone and if I do I have a beacon Andy avi lung. I like skiing with friends so much more anyways.
