nah, newschoolers really just has a hard on for overly large skis. something about a direct correlation between dicks size and ski size, this also applies to DIN settings. It's the skiers equivalent to wearing shoes that are too big for you.
at any rate, if he were to go with something like a cochise (which has a flat tail) and him being between a 2 or 3 type skier (an absolute expert is actually a 3+) a mid to high 170's ski would be the sweet spot for him. twin tips you need to size up on because of the additional tip which shortens running length, the influence 105 in only a half twin, the rise on the tail is only 30mm or so, so you don't have to size up as much. so someone who's in between a 2/3 he'd want a ski that turns easier, so a shorter ski will have a smaller turn radius, and will weigh less.
