Wide angle

Hey ns,

So i am at that point in my life where i would like to invest in a wide angle lens. I am shooting on a 60d and do not see me upgrading to full frame in the near future. I have shot a couple of times with the canon 10-22 and have been pleased with the results. But what other options do i have? My price range is probably 900 dollars at the max. The lenses i have been looking at are the tokina 11-16, canon 10-22, and the canon 17-40. Have any of you used any of these lenses or know any better ones for the money? I do not care about auto focus. and i would love a prime or a zoom.

You said you thought about the 17-40, what sort of focal length are you needing? Big difference between 11 and 17. Also a LOT of people swear by the 11-16, apparently THE best crop uwa.

if you're looking for a wide angle go with the 11-16. on a crop sensor, the 17-40 would be about 27-64 mm.

i have the tokina 11-16 and I LOVE IT. makes for such good shots. the only thing i dont really like is that it is heavy. but other than that its amazing

the only reason to not buy the tokina is because everybody here loves it and uses it - if you use a different lens, your edits will stand out a little bit more from others (not saying thats a good or bad thing), but the tokina is a solid lens for sure!

This is such a stupid fucking line people have been saying recently. A wide shot is a wide shot, just because its the same lens doesn't mean itll look the same! No one films at the same height and distance from a skier at the same angle, period.


OP, ditch the canon 10-22, get the tokina 11-16. When it comes to non-distorted wide angles, the 11-16 is the best for crop cameras, period. I would not recommend any other UWA, is $699 new right in your budget, you can get them for 500-600 used if you're lucky. good luck.

or you could always go with this lens. Get those longer shots. plus it looks mean as hell when your hand holding this 50 pound beast!

the tamron 14mm prime is pretty legit. ive used that quite a bit and really like it.

dont know the price tho

It's ok, but its not the widest. Obviously I know 14 is wide, but 11 is WIDE.

Hey eheath in terms of optical quality do you like your tamron 17-50 or 11-16 better. I know the 11 to 16 is a lot wider, just curios cause they around the same price point

same price point? the tokina 11-16 is $699 and the tamron 17-50 is $350...

They are very different lenses. The tokina is an UWA and the tamron is a wide-normal lens. The tamron is less sharp at lower aperture but at 5.6-8 theyre both very sharp. They're really two different lenses, one doesn't replace the other.

I don't know your time frame but it may be worth waiting a little to see if any Tamron's pop up for sale here or on dvxuser. I sold my tamron for 260 about a month ago because i wanted to help another ski filmer out.

Has anyone here used a rokinon 14mm or a tokina 12-24 f4? The tokina looks pretty nice and its only ~350-400 bucks.
