haha, yeah-- I'll agree with you there, keeping in mind though that "more liberal" does not mean liberal. It is likely in that study that the majority of those that became liberal came from the "middle of the road" group and those that were conservative moved to the "middle of the road"-- very few probably swapped from far right to far left-- it is also true that liberals flock to liberal areas (ie: if you're gay you may move to a liberal city) and so the blue are becoming bluer and the red more red. There are quite a few factors, it's pretty interesting actually. I just don't really associate intelligence with political party choice because I know there are geniuses on both sides. The most intelligent I think lay somewhere right in the middle.
But sure, you could say that there are "simpler" folk in the bible belt, and that they are mostly red voters, I wouldn't argue against that. I just think there are so many factors that go into the correlations that you're referring to.
