Every god damn day someone says to me "Oh, Newschoolers... isn't that the place where 12 year olds talk shit?"

Even on this fucking site I hear the same god damn shit over and over.

However... I see the demographics of the users... and hardly anyone is 12. Most people on here are mid-late teens running into mid-late 20s.

Personally, I think the problem is people in their late teens, 20s and 30s ACTING like fucking stupid 12 year olds. Hell, I bet the 12 year olds are too scared to act stupid.

So I propose that we crush this 'stupid bitchy 12 year old' type behaviour. Hell, in the old days the rules of moderation were "Fuck you - there is no rules. We delete shit when its fucking stupid and your shit was stupid so STFU."

I mean does anyone like it? I'm talking about when a perfectly good discussion thread goes to complete shit because 2-3 people get angry at each other and just start saying 'you're wrong you fag... you're so faggy faggy fag that you can't fagging fag fag fag."

Fuck that. Its annoying, and we could actually be having some rad conversations about cool shit. I have zero problems with people calling shit out, just do it like you aren't a fucking 11 year old moron. When you call someone out, do it with intelligence and a good fucking point.

Isn't that a better burn than calling someone a stupid name anyway?

Does anyone actually listen to TGR? I'm 30 and think TGR acts like a bunch of fucking pansy, drop out marine recruits. The only thing you get from that site is 'educated' bullshit. I'm talking about being educated at bullshitting- something TGR's members excel at. Keep shitting out your mouth and we'll do the same.

but possible make an upvote/downvote button for each comment like reddit has or even like the videos and pictures have

then if a shitty ass fag faggity fag fag comment pops up and gets insane downvotes it should be automatically deleted after a certain amount of negativity

This for sure. It seems that a lot of users are more concerned on calling out "n00bs" for stupid shit , calling kids retarded , or being a straight ass to everyone they come across than actually using the site as intended.

I only signed up for this site because it features a lot of shit talking and people weren't up each others asses or trying to win points with moderators. Had only read other ski forums and never felt compelled to sign up but I decided to on this one.

I can scroll over stupid posts/threads I don't mind that stuff being mixed in.

Adults taking message boards seriously is a pathetic thing. People who know there shit and have something legit to contribute will get respect no matter what and those aren't the dickriders who get all uptight on these things.

Maybe this is just me....but I miss the old NS. I liked ignorant people getting bitched at, the constant "searchbar", basically the way eheath rolls.

I feel as though NS is getting way too soft. Everyone is all lovey-dovey. I feel that when obvious gapers / inexperienced people ask silly questions, they should get a sarcastic, almost hateful answer.

I feel as though that is what newschoolers is. The forums are always full of a certain amount of garbage. I hardly ever use them, and when I do I can easily and quickly distinguish which threads are useful and may actually provide a nugget of information. I feel as though that is has it has always been that way. Except the derp threads now, instead of containing hilarious hate and sarcasm now contain people trying to be all nice and friendly to people asking "how does I freeski?!?!"

See, I disagree with that. Those sarcastic, almost hateful answers would steer me the hell away from those people, and most likely the community they're involved with.
What seems like a silly question to an exeperienced person could very well be a legitimate question to the inexperienced person.
Newschoolers has the potential to be an amazing, supportive community for not only those people who have been around the sport for a while but the "newbies" as well. I mean, do you want to discourage people from doing something that you yourself love to do? Probably not if you want to see what you love continue to devevlop and grow.
Of course, a little bit of ribbing to the new guy will always happen, but some of the downright hate I've seen on here is way past good-natured ribbing.

I think some of my favourite things that happened to me this past winter was having experienced people help me out with new things that I was trying and seriously answering what were probably silly questions.

I am a relative newbie but I like what newschoolers is and am stoked on what it can be; I definitely think this site, the people who run it and the people who use it, are the future of skiing.

Now I do want to make it clear that being completely whitewashed is exactly what we're not trying to go for. Becoming a place where you can't say anything, and everyone has to be totally buttoned up isn't the right idea either. Swearing, calling stuff out, posting joke threads... even using memes to answer - all of that stuff is totally fine. Its just when it crosses more into the personal attacks.

So if someone were to say:

"Man, that last friday video by FD wear was super awesome. I loved every last second of it."

Correct angry response:

"Are you kidding me? That video represents everything that is wrong with skiing and I absolutely fucking hate it. Why do people act like that when they are on the ski hill?"

Incorrect angry response:

"OP is a fag. Skittle gangster kids are so fucking gay they fucked their FD boyfriends and got aids."

There is absolutely nothing wrong with being angry, disagreeing with someone, calling things out. There would be nothing wrong with me getting horn locked with you for making the first response and telling you that I feel your attitude towards that is a major problem, and you're contributing to the downfall of skiing.

Its when the attacks cross that very grey line into plain stupid, and just personal attacks. That is when everything goes to shit. Being insulted like that, almost anyone would retort and just degrade into the hell hole of personal attacks. That ruins everyone's day.

So to iterate, the important thing about bringing this up, is its not to whitewash the site (As McMahoooon said) - its simply to cut out that extremely low-brow bullshit.

Best humor site would likely be judged if someone hung out in NSG for a while. I mean that place is absolutely hilarious. I'd bet the writer did some of that, and didn't follow through on much research at all. They didn't even have a community category, which TGR, NS and EpicSki should all have been listed in.

As for NS being the laughing stock of TGR... I mean that is pretty obvious that TGR thinks Newschoolers is stupid. That doesn't make it right... just like it doesn't factually make TGR stupid that lots of people on Newschoolers think it is so.

I mean the folks over at EpicSki probably look at TGR and quietly laugh at themselves for how immature a bunch of 30-50 year olds act. They probably say "Oh man, I remember when I was 40 and made fun of kids thinking I was so big and tough. Wait until your 65 bro, you'll get some perspective.

Something very important to realize here is that we can fine tune all of this. We're a community, and we can act however we want to act.

A huge reason I made this thread, is I wanted to put the proposition out there and see if people agreed with me. Clearly a ton of people do, and as you post you need to remember that keeping out of the complete gutter is of interest to a ton of people on the site.

As has been said by many people, this all gets a lot easier if the good people stand up and guide everyone else in the right direction.

Newschoolers is in your hands. Guide it wherever you want it to go.

That makes no sense at all. All you're doing in that situation is alienating a new member of the site/new skier. At one point, you were a gaper noob with 10 posts too, and I'm sure you had some pretty dumb questions. Hell, my first post on this site was a thread titled something like, "can you ski switch on uncentered skis?" People told me I fucked up big time by mounting my AR6s -2.5 and should sell my skis because I'd never be able to hit rails or ski switch. I felt pretty bad for a while because I thought I made a mistake until I got a few legit answers from people who weren't trolling. I was 19 (I think) at the time, so I was fine with the snide remarks, but maybe a 13 or 14 year old wouldn't react the same and not want to come back to NS. Who knows?

It does range slightly dependant on how you poll that data and where you take it from.

For istance, the average age of a member that posts regularly is younger. The average age of traffic that just visits and doesn't log in (yes there are ways to measure that) is much older.

If you average it all out, you get approximately the following:

13-17 - ~27%
18-24 - ~51%
25-34 - ~15%
35-44 - ~4%
44+ - ~3%

I think when you calculate average age, its around 22. You can see by the stats above that 73% of all traffic is 18+. That is a massive proportion.

Again, these numbers flucutate dependant on where you pull your data from and how you mix it. However as of the last time I did a really deep research dive into this (say 6-12 months ago) it reflected about what you see there.

The key to remember is that NSers are getting older. Not as many leave as some people might say, and an NSer that was 12 when the site started is now 25 years old.

Our community can grow in whatever direction it wishes. I'd never want to turn into the crusty, angry adults that are over at TGR, nor do I want to be the perceived annoying 12 year olds that people think we are. You can get older, become mature, and still be raw and fucking out of control. They are pretty good at this in snowboarding, and many other action sports.

YOu don't have to become a hippie or put on a suit because you got a bit older.

Getting older is sweet. I always like to point out the fact that I no longer have to ask my parents to sleep over at a girls house and have them say no.

To be completely honest my personal feeling is one of the worst things that we do is have the forum ordered by latest. If there was more ratings, and we ordered by rating likely problems would vanish.

At least by default. People who wanted 'latest' could still view it, but it tends to favor really stupid threads with stupid fights being pinned to the top.

Can we just pause and take a moment to reflect on something here? This is a compound problem, and what i think Bishop really is trying to point out is that amongst other online communities, NS gets a bad rap, and this post that i quoted right here is just as to be blame as anything else. I frequent reddit a whole lot lately, and my god, do they hate this place. Even people with good things to say about NS and our style of skiing still avoid this place like the plague. People are cool with "in-jokes", but the NS crowd takes it to a new level, to the point where a very small portion of new content ON THE FORUMS is ever worth reading. The same kids, like this kid here, post on EVERY topic. The NS team has created avenues for you guys to communicate in a more private context, yet almost EVERYTHING is posted in the forums. Nobody other than the three of you guys who are conversing in a thread want to read it, but the way NS works, it just keeps getting bumped to the top. This is getting really wrong, and im sorry for picking on you Justin, (if that is your name), but if you guys took a step back and stopped treating NS like it's the note you are passing back and forth in homeroom, this place could be much better. All the right people are here running it, the actual ski content is the best there is for our niche, the user generated content on the forums needs to be more strictly organized, and i guess a little bit of shut the fuck up can go a long way in this situation. I don't post much anymore, but i still love NS and the people that make it happen, help em out!

Ordered by highest rating -with a latest option- would be preferable. But we need to cultivate a culture of content rating before it can be successfully implemented. Most news items and threads I see are only rated in the single digits or not at all.. Hopefully in time, with better improved rating interfaces (i.e. having the up/down option on the thumbnail), this will improve.

Sometimes simply putting the option to sort something by rating creates a much better ecosystem of rating.

Anyway, won't happen quite yet but the forums are due for some major tweaking.

Yeah but that isn't the point of this place. I may have a strong voice, and be capable of being a leader - but I just want to present good ideas to everyone. If the ideas get support, then we can move forward as a community.
