Getting Started

So I'm new to this forum, and just wanted to know the best way to get started in the park.  I have ski'd prob 15 times in my life, and the last time was about 2 years ago.  I am pretty comfortable on the mountain and can ski most stuff, but never really was in a park.  Is it best to start on rails, jumps or what?  Any advice would help alot!

Wear really big jackets. That way, you radiate cool and are therefore one of the worlds best skiers.

Tried on some full tilts, but they felt terrible compared to the spk's.

If SPKs work best for you get them you'll enjoy yourself alot more with a nice pair of boots. Any ideas about skis, how tall and what weight are you?

I have a pair of k2 Public enemy's w/ marker bindings.  Not sure the size I bought them like 5 or 6 yrs ago and they go right under my chin.

Ya I had in mind the full tilts but the spk's felt a million times better.

Get comfortable with just skiing down groomers and making turns before you jump in to the park

Do it all. Hit some small jumps, 50-50 some little boxes, and then ski whatever features are the most fun. If it's not fun, find a better feature.

but once you get into park try to spin some 180's and slide some boxes unnatural its will make it easier in the long run when there are no holes in your progression.

And if you want to slide rails make sure the edges underneath your boots (and in front the boots a little ways along with behind the boot a little ways) are detuned somewhat so you don't catch your edge on the rail and fall.

DUDE. I have those exact same skis in my basement. They should be fine, although it appears they're mounted a little far back but that might be just me.

File down or round off the edges so they're not sharp. But if you do this you won't be able to turn as sharp or as easily.

Start out in the beginner park, don't worry about trying to look cool or impress people when you are just starting out. Once you feel more comfortable then move on to bigger features, also it helps to watch other people hitting features first to get an idea of what and what not to do.

If you got the skis poles and boots I'd say start with little jumps but every time you go skiing go to the bunny hill and work on skiing switch and just spin like butters to and then you should start doing 180s and then rails also if your not having fun there's no point in doing it mean if your stuck on say 180 just go and do some thing that you' like and then come come back later to it. Yeah, I have some SPK's that I'd prefer over Full Tilts any day. FT just fits weird on me. Also just get comfortable hitting little side booters, and when straight airing bring your feet up for practice so doing grabs are easier. Rails/boxes always look to the end of them as you're sliding them. When learning spins spin with your head and follow with the rest of your body and always keep your head up not looking at your skis.

I'm assuming switch means "backwards".. If so I can go a full blue run pretty comfortable that way.  Is that the best way to start with tricks?

Get to know your skis and how comfortable you feel on them and learn to ski the right way the first time. it will pay off if you progress into the backcountry and deep powder. find a bro to teach ya. also, once youre feeling confident in the air and want to go bigger find a spot somewhere out of the way and build a kicker with a landing into soft snow. fall as much as you want w/o getting too bunged up. hardpack hurts like a bitch. good luck and go kill it!

For jumps or landing to slide on rails? Either one you want to be prepared to land, knees bent legs about shoulder width and when landing normal try to get your tails to just tap a split second first same goes for switch with your nose. At least that's what works best for me, others may disagree. Always be balanced in the center of your skis and have the most force right beneath you at your feet. Don't lean forward or back, stay neutral but adjust your angles depending on the slope of the landing.

Definatley start with some smaller jumps. And don't start by being a gaper and barely hit the jumps. To acutally land a jump how it is meant to be landed, you want to take off the jump and land on the down sloped part infront of it. Just straight air at first and slowly progress to bigger jumps. For rails and boxes, it's all about commiting. If you don't commit the whole way and don't turn all the way side ways, you'll nut yourself.
