How long can you hold your breath?

title says all, how long can you? Doesn't matter whether underwater or not. When I used to swim I could hold it for around 2:30 min underwater, then I stopped and I started smoking.... Last year I could hold it for only 30-45 seconds, and now that I started doing cycling, I just found out I can hold it for 1:30-1:40 no problem, and I still smoke 8-10 cigs a day.and you guys?

I used to try holding my breath when I went swimming, and I think I managed something around 2:10.

Now I can manage around 1:00 max, maybe 1:30 if I hyperventilate a bit :P

2 minutes if i sit in a chair and do nothing. decreases drastically underwater or swimming though

first time i tried in a while i just got 1:06 but i'm sure i can hold my breath for longer



underwater you can achieve the same time just be completely still, focus on your heartbeat, that helps me

True, I just watched something in tv about the guy who broke the world record (22 min I think?) and his heartbeat dropped to around 30bpm, I noticed mine drop too when I did it

yeah.

having a naturally low heartrate helps too. i have a low heartrate, and an unnaturally high VO2 max (my body uses a higher percentage of the oxygen it intakes than most peoples bodies), so i'm sure i can do better than 1 minute

seriously? it's really not that hard. most of it is in your head. just relax, and don't panic. keeping your heart rate down helps immensely.

Tried again and got 2 minutes, was really wanting air by the end, but when I breathed it wasn't that different. Could probly force 2:30, maybe 3 if I absolutely had to, but I'd most likely pass out.

Sit for a few minutes after, cause walking after a three minute hold is hard. Don't exhale really quick, because the rapid decompression of your lungs will make your blood rush there for some reason (Don't know why, but that's what some guy told me), until you have little in your brain, and that's called a shallow water blackout. I highly recommend reading about safety and shit before you go trying for really long holds, because doing it incorrectly and forcing yourself is how you get brain damage and nasty shit like that.
