Atheism... Why do it?

1. Atheists really enjoy being smarter and more rational than everyone else. Have you noticed that about Atheists? I have.

2. Atheists tend to be haters who don't believe in anything. You get excited about something cool and they are always all skeptical, asking lots of critical questions, and basically kill the positive energy.

3. They love reading Reddit.com, which is a perfectly good site (never been), but they get all smug about how Reddit is better than other sites. Like is there some rule that if you don't worship the real God, you have to worship Reddit instead?!? WTF?

4. Atheists love to mock hard working, religious Americans who love their kids, work hard, and go to church.

5. Atheists think they are rational and scientific but isn't it more rational and open minded to say that God *might* exist? Should real scientists keep an open mind?

6. Atheists are some of the biggest trolls on the Internet. They will probably start trolling me just for writing this post.

7. Atheists are the kind of people who enjoy telling small children that Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, and the Easter Bunny are all fake. Thanks for ruining all the fun, atheist! I guess you think a 5 year old knowing “the truth” is more important than them having a happy childhood.

8. They just suck. You don't even need a reason. It is obvious. Just accept it.

why is it false? the holocaust was the persecution and genocide of the jews. judaism is a religion. if religion didn't exist the jews wouldnt exist. if the jews didn't exist it would have been impossible to try and kill all of them. therefore, if religion didn't exist, the holocaust wouldn't have happened.

Religion does cause tensions between people thats for sure. Would it be cured if there was no religion. Im not sure but we all disagree on things so I am guessing war would still happen. I don't believe in Jesus or that there is a god necessarily. Really no one will know until they die, we may very well possibly never know how the fuck we got here or if a being created our living environment.

I think there is a possibility of life after death, because what happened to us before we landed on our planet that we call earth. were we siting in a death bead of old age? Were we in some other universe hunting down voldemort? Do we only begin to exist when we are conceived?

No one fucking knows. Religion doesn't have the answers neither does science. It all comes down to what you want to believe. I am very skeptical that people can tell you that there is a god and he made this planet or universe when they have no proof. Its like santa clause, your parents say he is true, you never see him yet you get present from him. In the end its a big hoax. I don't disregard the idea totally, but think that its very unlikely to know what there is after we die and how we got here.

Science provides real explanations for happenings, backed up by data.

Religion spouts bullshit with no evidence.

Completely different.

Also, religion gives people false reasoning and encourages horrid behavior.

A world without organized religion would be a much more peaceful, productive place.

did you read my post? whether or not the answers they offer are true hardly matters, the point is that both are motivated to explain that which is so far unexplainable. a crutch for our discomfort with that which we do not understand.

and for the most part, religions dont encourage horrid behavior. and i'm not sure what you mean by false reasoning. and people would find reasons to kill each other, with or without religion as an excuse for their real motives.

and, again, whether or not they are right isn't the point. both are used to explain things people don't understand, right? so how is science less of a crutch than religion in that respect?

and, yes, religion causes bad things to happen, but, as i said, people will always find reasons to kill each other. if we didn't have religion it would be something else that people killed each other in the name of.

You might argue that it is human nature for us to kill each other, but I disagree.

If religion had been non-violent or hadn't existed, I feel this world would be a better place.

Also, religion is a crutch.

Science is a cast.

One heals and repairs, one helps but doesn't do much by itself.

This analogy is shit because they both work well with each other, but in reality science and religion does not.

Religion is a crutch because it is for the weak minded. It provides a doctrine that you can follow and live your life by without thinking for yourself. Science gives you hard facts that don't tell you how you should act necessarily or how you should respond to a situation. it just tells you why it happened. Religion provides comfort and cushioning. It claims to know everything and says that a fatherly dictator is watching over you. Where as science says you are nothing but a small speck of matter in an infinite universe.

And you are right. A quote from Richard Dawkins will suffice "Good men will do good things, and bad men will do bad things. However, if you want a good man to a bad thing that takes religion."

I would disagree about your last statement though. Religion or any type of doctrine/dogma that claims to be infallible is inherently bad and with that absent we would be living in a much better world. People would still kill each other for reasons unspecified, but there would be no crusades 9/11, stalin, bigotry, car bombing, inquisitions aka. no mass movement to destroy a people or impose ones fews on others. If we could all just be rational people and think for ourselves the world would be a better place.

if you look at history, it becomes pretty clear that it is human nature for us to kill each other to get what we want. more often than not, religion is just the justification. would the world be a better place if religion had never existed? i dont know. maybe. would there be such a prejudice against gay people and everything else christianity has a prejudice against? hard to say. people dont like people who aren't the same as them or aren't considered "normal." personally, i find it hard to believe that so many people are so intensely religious that it actually creates a prejudice inside them against gays. again, seems more like an excuse than anything to me. i guess it could be one of those things where you hear from birth that it is bad so you eventually become subconsciously conditioned to believe it. i dont know enough about that kind of thing to say if it is a factor or not, but if it is then i guess religion could be at fault for that. but, to me, it seems more likely that religion is just used as an excuse for what people know deep down is not an okay way to think.

This is a problem with society, and our upbringing.

Not a given opinion that isn't traditional to everyone.

If we want to get philosophical, why do anything?

Your life is literally a microsecond in the big picture. 

It won't matter who you are, or were.

Do what makes you happy, and disregard societal pressures to dream big.

Because at the end of it all, nothing will happen.

The meaning of life isn't given, it is discovered.

i dont know. but is homophobia (and the others like it) really a mannerism people hold dear from birth? personally, again, i don't think so. i dont think many parents go around teaching their baby about the importance of hating gay people. but i guess you disagree, and this is where the argument effectively ends.

about the quote. meh. again, i dont believe it. i think religion is just the justification people use for wanting to do something they know is wrong. but maybe i'm wrong, maybe for some people religion really is ingrained that far into their brains.

i agree with your last paragraph, too, for the most part. though the crusades definitely would have happened with or without religion. probably 9/11 too. and you could easily make arguments about the other three being motivated more by politics than religion, too. I think that "christianity" is too often and too loosely substituted with "religion." we talk about it the most as it is the worlds largest religion and the dominant one in america and western society, but they, obviously, aren't synonymous terms. it's not like all religions are inherently bad. i'm sure there are plenty of peaceful ones out there that we don't know much about. personally, i dont have a problem with the idea of religion as a concept. the world is a tough, scary place to live in and i dont see it as a weakness to want to look to a higher power as a source of comfort and moral guidance. in theory, it would be easy to create a religion that does these things without all of the negative stigma that is attached to religion today. the problem with christianity is that it was started 2000 years ago. times have changed, but the doctrine hasn't changed with them.

Yes, some people do treat it like a crutch, but with so many followers of Christianity in the world, like anything else, there is bound to be some kooks.

Also, where exactly does science make claims about God? Science will never be able to answer, ultimately, how we got here, and why we are here. We can potentially explain all the way back to the very instead the big bang happened, but what caused that event? You many be of the opinion that it is purely of chance, but the idea of a God is perfectly valid as well.

No test has ever been concieved that can tell us what a universe would look like with a God, or with a God, science can never prove or disprove the existence of God.
