How many of you guys ride with backplates?

I'm just curious about this. Many of my friends ride with backplates and helmets all the time. Some of them have never had one on. Are most people using them, or does alot of people ride without them, including pros? Thoughts?

I pretty much always wear a back protector and helmet. To me, they're like extensions of my body now, I don't even notice them. I really don't give a fuck what kind of protection other people do or do not wear, it's all up to oneself. However calling people pussies for wearing protection, is really fucking stupid. I guess it comes from some form of self esteem issues, and I find it pretty retarded that other people are so preoccupied with what other people do or do not wear. Get the fuck over it.

Also, is a back brace and a back protector the same? Back brace sounds like some sort of medical equipment for people having their spines straightened out or something.

They probably wont stop you snapping your back, but they differently help with impacts. landed on your back on a rail or over rotated a back flip that's when they help heaps and stop trip ending injures.

Yeah, but as others have said, impact shorts and back protectors aren't going to do that much to stop big season ending injuries.

i know they make you feel more confident, but say i was to land on my back trying a cork 7. would this back protector truly save me? or would it just minimize the bruises?

i've also realized that wearing a helmet helps protect my skull, but it doesn't protect my brain. if i hit my head hard the helmet makes it feel ike my brain just rolls around inside my head possibley causing more damage

Oh my fucking god, are you actually trying to argue against the merits of helmets, one of the most scientifically proven ways of preventing traumatic head injuries? And on top of that you think they actually cause more damage? You must be one the stupidest people on here.

You said it yourself, it protects your skull. So what does your skull protect? Right, your brain. I'm not going to go into details of what helmets do, but judging by your post, you have forgotten to wear one on numerous occasions. Jesus christ.

sure a helmet will protect your skull from cracking open on a rail, but it won't protect your brain at all on a 40 foot booter when you slam it into the ground.

football players wear helmets and how many of them are having problems later in life? THEY'RE WEARING FULL PROTECTIVE HELMETS.

dude speaking from experience, when you hit your head on an icy landing with no helmet on, it hurts more that when you wear a helmet.  Helmets lessen the strength of the concussion you get. When you wear a helmet the head ache won't last as long, you won't forget as much, and you won't feel as mentally slow when you crash with a helmet. 

If anyone thinks helmets do nothing to help prevent damage to your brain, they probably have hit their helmetless head a few too many times.

i'm not saying helmets do nothing. My original point was that when I wear a helmet I feel more like trying a cork 7 than doing a blunt 3. I end up hitting my head more trying stupid shit and dicking around because i feel more confident. I know helmets help.

don't listen jibberino he must have misread my argument and turned it into something stupid. i'm not arguing helmets are useless. Jibberino is just stupid enough to argue with me and pretend i said that.

1. Your quote regarding football players proves absolutely nothing in relation to our argument. Why do you think football players are more prone to neurodegenerative diseases? Because they fucking run full speed into each other!!! What do you think would happen if they were not wearing helmets? They would be severely injured or dead within a short time!!!. In football, severe head injuries are relatively rare, deaths even more so, ergo, helmets protect your skull as well as your brain. You have actually managed to choose an example, that supports my argument. Great work, thanks for that.

2. Why do you fail to understand that to protect your skull is to protect your brain? How is this not logical to you? I think what you have gotten confused is that helmets will not necessarily prevent you suffering a concussion, however it can prevent you from suffering a cracked skull, and traumatic brain injury, and instead suffer "just" a concussion. Helmets are proven to prevent or lessen head injuries, when suffering a crash. Here's a breakdown of what helmets do:

"Helmets designed to handle major crash energy generally contain a layer of crushable foam. When you crash and hit a hard surface, the foam part of a helmet crushes, controlling the crash energy and extending your head's stopping time by about six thousandths of a second (6 ms) to reduce the peak impact to the brain. Rotational forces and internal strains are likely to be reduced by the crushing."

Basically, your helmet diffuses the energy, so that instead of cracking your skull and INJURING YOUR BRAIN!!! (See the link?) your helmet cracks. It's actually pretty simple.

I cannot believe how ignorant this is, and it is mind boggling how you do not see the similarities between hitting your head on a rail and hitting it in a landing. There's not much difference, it all comes down to with how much force you hit your head on any given thing. You can hurt your head equally bad on both things.

4. It is so amusingly ironic that you would say that I should know what I'm talking about before I post, when you clearly have not even the slightest clue about the bullshit you're talking right now. It's so amusing, it gets aggravating.

Yes, because it lessens the impact. It literally lowers the impact force directed at your head because it absorbs part of the impact. Thus it protects both your brain and skull.


Let's say there are three types of impacts to the head:

- light impact: without a helmet you get a concussion and with a helmet you get no damage

- medium impact: without a helmet you suffer brain damage or die, with a helmet you get a concussion

- high impact: without a helmet you die, with a helmet you suffer brain damage or die

Some people claim that helmets are useless because they won't necessarily protect you in the high impact situation, for example hitting your head on a tree from a high amount of speed. Most of the impacts we encounter are in the first two categories though, making a helmet very useful.


Also if your helmet makes you try more risky things and you end up getting injured that way, it's your own fault and not the helmet's.

Sorry for the double post, i was so distracted by the sheer idiocy of that anti-helmet guy that I forgot to contribute to the original topic.

Yes I wear a back-guard. Although it does help protect against impacts, my favorite part is that it gives me back support while sitting on chairlifts.

the flexible ones are awesome, like the poc vpd stuff, or slytech 2nd skin
way more comfortable to ski with than the hard ones

you get hit in the head over and over again with or without a helmet theres going to be damage. does a helmet prevent damage? yes. can you still get brain damage with a helmet on yes. My point was that helmets protect your skull, if you hit it hard your brain is still going rattle inside your head and you can still get a concussion. stop picking fights on the internet nerd.

It's perfect. I'm sure the VPD vest might be more comfy, but to be honest I hardly feel the Spine Ergo Bug. When I ride I forget it's there. People might say thats because I've ridden so long without one, but no. I've forgot it at home and haven't realized it until I got back. It's a safe buy, and it's cheaper than the vest. I've tried the vest and personally I feel safer with the hard shell on my back, but thats just me.

Main advice: use a back protector.

Advantages:
life
posture
back protection
enhances your already-good looking ski figure

Disadvantages:
costs money
takes 1 minute of your time to put on and take off

I used to wear a back protector, but I don't think I will this year. This summer at saas fee one of my friends over shot a big jump wearing a back protector and ended up breaking two vertibres and getting a helicopter ride out. Afterwards the doctor told him that back protectors don't help you in a serious accident and give you a false sense of confidence. Of course they help with bumps or bruises on rails, but for me the prtection is not worth how uncomfortable they are.

The Poc Vest with the protective foam is designed for this. It's soft and when it hits something hard the shell goes from soft to protective. I believe this type of back protector can help you in such a situation. Besides, the Poc Vest isn't really uncomfy at all. Instead of taking a hit one place, the vest spreds out the damage over the entire surface of the shell. In this case I don't believe when the doctor said that a back protector wouldnt help in a serious accident. I think it protects more than you might think.

Doctors are specialised in certain subjects and it is their job to know about the human body, but for a doctor to say that back protectors don't help you in a serious accident, in my opinion, is being completely ignorant.

I know someone who accidentally skied off a small cliff (2-3m), and as he wasn't expecting a sudden drop he landed on his back. There was snow with rocks in between and he broke several ribs, his K2 Hellbents were destroyed, with one ski even snapping in half. He usually wore a back protector, though on this day he didn't have it with him, and later hospital doctors told him that a back protector would most likely have meant he'd have come away with bruising, instead of broken ribs.

To me, this is a serious accident, and the damage would have been greatly reduced by a back protector.

You're right that these protectors can be uncomfortable, but when I wear mine it isn't any more uncomfortable than my helmet or other clothing, I think it just depends on your attitude towards them.

About them not helping you in serious accidents - they spread any impact out over a much larger area, which can still hurt a lot, but this stops direct impacts on small areas of your back, which could result in fractures or organ ruptures.

no need for any further comments in reply to anything godofall says - he's a fucktard. in every instance of significant head collision there are 3 points of impact. the first is the exterior, second is the brain crashing into the front of the skull, and third is brain bouncing back and hitting the back of the skull. wearing a helmet exponentially reduces the damage caused by the first impact and cushions that initial impact so that the following two are less detrimental.
there is no argument, you're just wrong

when i see someone riding a motorcycle without a helmet on i think to myself "what a dumbshit". it is almost the same thought for when i see someone riding park or big lines without a helmet. is it really that uncomfortable or does it wreck your style that bad to wear a helmet?

Good point, rocks and other pointed objects are something I didnt consider and I can see how a back protector would help in a situation like that where all of the impact is focused on one small area. I was more referring to wearing them for park rather than backcountry. In general i think there's just a point when you're in a situation where spinal injuries come into play that your fucked no matter what. This doesn't mean that ill never wear mine now, but I definitly used to think that they were much more effective then they actually are.

Yeah, that's true, but even then, imagine you were given the choice: 8 broken ribs and a pulmonary laceration (with back protector), or a spinal cord injury meaning you are partially or completely paralysed for life? (this is just an example)

To get to a point where you're so fucked that it doesn't matter whether you're wearing one or not, then you're gonna have to be hitting some massive kickers or going a damn fast speed.

Anyway, it's the same as with helmets and any other protection gear - it's your own choice to make. For me, wearing the back protector is always worth it. :-)

I wear a knee brace and thats it. I've never fallen any way that has hurt anything besides when I tore my ACL. I rarely hit my head, but I still wear a helmet all the time.

Yes, it did. I fractured 4 vertebrae in my neck, fractured my pelvis in 6 places, fractured my tailbone and dislocated and fractured part of my sacrum/ sacroiliac joint amongst other things. The gap between C7 and Sacrum was saved because of my back protector. They're running a case study on it now, but preliminary results show that it was the back protector that stropped me from breaking my back.
