Are there any sailors out there?

I started racing FJs at school this year, which has been super fun, and sail scows at the summer camp I work at.

I have a Hobie, and my best friend has a Formula 18 Nacra, sick boat.

I am going to SF to watch the America's Cup this summer.

Dunno if you heard/or care, but the Oracle boat turtled in SF Bay today.

Well hello there. I have been sailing my entire life. I have sailed a whole laundry list of boats because I was working at the Broker/Dealership for new and used boats. On the regular I sail Force 5, Laser 28, Tartan 33, J22, J24, 420, lasers, and I'm sure there are some others but I can't really remember now.

FJ's are fun to sail. I am still between if I like dingy racing or big boat better.

yeah! Ive been sailing since like kindergarten, but that being said im only 17. I Started sailing optis much like a lot of others do to learn the basics. Then i started sailing optis competitively which was a lot of fun. I actually miss it so much. Then I got to big and moved to 420's which I also sailed competitively. I live in Pa but would spend about 4-5 weeks in Annapolis every summer. We would also sail a J105 or J80 every now and then. Ill probably start sailing lasers competitively this summer.

I've raced Sunfish and 420s. My teacher for Sunfish was like the 2nd ranked Sunfish sailor in the world, so I was in good hands.

Im a sailor, raced laser and other dinghy's, still doing a lot of matchracing, also trainer/coach for RS Feva group..just sold my one off yacht..

a girl I know races (not sure what type of boat.... they're 2 person boats though) and went to Junior Olympics this year, placed 6th in her regatta i believe.

I've sailed (non competitively) big boat all my life but last year i joined the sailing team at my school and have been crusing around in fj's, 420's, and lasers.

quick question: does anyone know if there are one-deal-at-a-time sites (like steepandcheap) for sailing gear???

It was probably a 420 if she is the same age as you. And not to burst your bubble or anything, but the Junior olympics arnt that big of a deal. I placed 3rd in them a couple years ago. Well I guess it depends on where you live, but for sailing they have a Junior olympics for each state. Its not a national regatta really. But Since you live in MA it might be a bigger deal then it Is down here in Maryland, New Jersey, or Virginia. The Buzzards Bay and Hyannis regattas are most likely much larger. A long with North Americans.

haha yeah. ive "won" the junior olympics in a a couple different classes for multiple years haha.  the real junior national regattas that are actually really competitive are the Chubb U.S. Junior Sailing Championships for the Sears, Bemis and Smythe trophies, which i have also done. OP, what college do you sail for?

During the summer i'm a captain on an old Volvo Ocean Racing 60. (Still bloody fast, 30 knots are no exception)
We do tours for rich people in the French Riviera with it.
Or we show them what their own yacht is capable of.

I used to tear is up on sunfishes and lasers back in the day. Taking a little laser out on lake ontario in 5 foot swells = awesome.


Miss the days. Never sailed on anything bigger than a hobie cat though.

haha sounds like our schools club sailing program. we're a "drinking team with a sailing problem" haha that and "live fast sail slow" are our mottos

we also race fjs, just had our last regatta down at uva

Me and my skipper qualified for bemis and smythe 420 nationals in marblehead, MA like two or three years ago but he couldn't go because he was taking effing Spanish over the summer -_- I was so pissed...

yeah, bemis is 420s and smythe is lasers. its funny to see how some of the "good" kids that do well in regular regattas like buzzards and hyannis do in these events. something to do with the absence of their very expensive coaches who arent allowed to be at these events haha. should be like that at every regatta and leave practice for coaching, not the regatta where the majority of the top finishers get told what to do and where to go after each race

whoops sorry:/ but yeah I agree, for all national regattas you shouldnt be allowed coaches. It actually shows that YOU know what side of the line is favorite, what side of the course is favored, or if you need to do some control tuning. I dont mind them for bay regattas (smaller, less competitive) because its fun to just go and raft up to a zodiac after a race, grab a water, and just talk.

Im from a big sailing town, and we have at five yacht clubs in a little harbor. My friends went to nationals and sail at Harvard. Basically, if you dont have a boat in my town, you are missing out.

I sailed 420s at bbr this year. crazy regatta. i think competition might be tighter than north americans. I sail 420s, lasers, lightnings, thistles, and i do some phrf and irc.

ahhh. I didnt sail Buzzards this year. Speaking of Buzzards bay/Hyannis, I saw a kid during the Hyannis regatta last year that had a saga tee on. Didnt appreciate it enough at the time to say anything to him. I wish I would have now though.

470 and Tanzer 22. for fun. 470 can't be beat. best boat in the water hands down. my dad's 470 was actually first built for and raced in the Montreal Olympics in 76. it's getting to be in rough condition though.

my parents met sailing.

my dad was a sail maker for a long time and did some olympic trial stuff or something. now he just smokes weed and plays golf.

No, that happened to the 72 as well, it broke a bunch of parts. I think it was the first time out on the water too.
