U.S.=Roman Empire

It may sound farfetched, but the United States is getting very close to what the Roman Empire was. The Roman Empire was very strong for a long period of time and was always the big dogs. We, as citizens of the United States, think that nothing will ever happen to us. This is what the Roman Empire thought. Their borders got so big it was difficult to protect and soon the rest of the surrounding Barbarians of Europe came together and took the giant down. Is this what is happening to us, right now? I sure hope not, but there are many similarites between the two.

i've heard a few similar comparisons.
You gotta admit there is a LOT of anti-american attitudes in the world. take france for example. But if everyone where to team up on the USA, it would NOT end like Rome. it would end like... nothing at all. it would be nuclear holocaust because everyone would send their missiles to the US and the US has enough missiles to send to pretty much everone else, so it would suck.

I don't think this could possible happen anytime soon, if at all, though.

for the record, I think the US is a cool country. I think Bush is a moron though.

Interesting question: if every country on earth launched Nuclear weapons on the USA, and the country would be completely and utterly destroyed NO MATTER WHAT, should they counterattack against their aggressors, and destroy the rest of the world, or allow the rest to live, but remain unavenged? I'm interested to see the answers. Maybe I'll finally get an idea of peoples' ethics around here.

Rome didnt fall because their resourses were to far spread. Rome fell because of Christianity. As christiany became more wide spred, there were diffrent branches of christianaty. Rome, was of course Roman catholic and anyone who want roman catholic, even if they were still christian, was a heathen, or a barbarian. Most of the groups of people Rome was fighting wanted to be a part of rome because rome was strong, and would bring peace to their people. The goths for example who were christian, just not the same kind of christian would have liked nothing more than to be part of Rome. But Rome would not have them because they were heathens, so instead they fought them. Rome fell out of their own ignorance. They could have lived on, very strong IF they had been able to accept cultural diffrences.

The Roman Empire survived by expansion until it collapsed from within. We're still way too young to even begin to compare to Rome... once we've gone through a few emperorships (hence the term 'empire') and have annexed Canada, then we can start the Roman comparisons. Give it a couple hundred years, at least.

no, coz what detroyed Rome was its own decadence (makes sense in english). they no more believed in anything, and the sack of rome was the fact of the barbarinas who were paid to fight for rome. USA have still strong moral values. that's the reason why you must keep bush on power

We aren't that close to Rome yet, our roads aren't quite good enough yet. And there are no bath houses. Not until I can get naked in public will I consider this empire a success. We have nothing on Rome.

rome had been a world power for over 700 years until it really started to decline, so if you want to compare to the Romans were about the time of Tiberius, nero(bad example) or maybe even augustus

Another interesting post that has not been reacted to is ATLANTASKI's last one...the US would be at the time of Nero...haha, that's kind of ironic. Not just the fact that Nero was a freaky bisexual tyrant (I'm not homopobic...I just used that to closer define him), but Nero was followed by a series of other tyrants (not right after him though), which resulted inthe decision that the Senate would ELECT the emperor. would be interesting to see the US gov't detach itself from the public even more

yea, there wasnt a real good emperor in the early to mid 100 ADs, and nero was one fucked up dude.......i think were around the period of Augustus.. or maybe tiberius to think about it, 3 bc- 14 AD ish

ok so on one of my US government tests we had an essay question like what is our government based on and shit, so i just went off on how our government is based on roman government with consuls and everything, i was soo pissed off at my tecaher cuase she didn't teach us anything about how really our government is solely based off roman goverment, so i just contradicated her on everything she had said as what our government was based on. lets just say shhe didn't exactly like my essay


And it makes me see, every puff that I breathe, potent herbs and leaves could ease the world . . .

Roman republicanism is really, really different from the American model. The consuls were selected by the senate and from the senate body, not by or from the people. The senate itself was self-propogating; new members were selected by existing members. The only representatives of the people, the Tribunes, were not part of the original model (they were introduced hundreds of years later) and had only a mediating force on the other two governing powers. I can't see very much in common with the two systems, personally. There are perhaps some parallels to be drawn with the Athenian system under Pericles and such leaders, but again, there are significant differences; their system was more direct and far less centralized, and would be impractical today.

Wow... I'm not thinking at all right now. Mediating was totally the wrong word to use there. The tribunes had some influence on decision processes, but certainly nothing that came anywhere near a complete control. The system itself prevented the Tribunes from exerting too much influence.

Yeah I've heard this argument before. Another good point to take into conciteration, is that alot of Roman leaders worshiped the gods of money and sex. Which are probably two of the most popular things to the american public. If you are ever in Boston go to the public library, there is this painting of Appolo shooting an arrow at the god of money, but the arrow turns into a snake. the tale goes on with the advancement of the gods of sex and money to rule. In my opinion its not all false.

eh...some wrong numbers and dates from whoever posted after me...there were no emperors prior to 27 bc...nero was definitely AD. The first emperor Augustus Aurelius was 'crowned' in 27 bc and reigned till 14 AD...If I remeber correctly Nero was around in the 60's AD...

I am sorry but we really aren't a lot like Rome, if anything in the modern world would even hold a candle to the Roman Empire would be Britain during its Imperialistic hight.

Really when you are talking about the massive extent of the British Empire you are talking about a lot more land and civilizations then the US could even rival. Class differences were gigantic, the difference between the Aristocracy and Proletariat was immense. When it comes to war Britain doesn't even rival us, I believe that in the last century they have been at peace for only one year.
