^Yeah, we're pretty much screwed. And the scary thing is no college deferment. I guess it's ROTC for me then Lt status, maybe special forces. As long as it's not infantry then I think I'll be fine.

Daytona Beach, Florida - US President George W Bush surprised his listeners at a campaign rally here on Saturday by seeming to oppose, then favour, then oppose replacing the all-volunteer US military with a draft.

Aides had alerted reporters to expect 'new language' in Bush's routine rejection of Democratic rival John Kerry's warnings that the Iraqi war has so strained the US armed forces that compulsory military service may be around the corner.

'Our all-volunteer army will remain an all-volunteer army,' Bush began, to cheers from supporters here in Florida, the richest prize among the dozen or so states up for grabs in the November 2 election.

'My opponent seems to be willing to say almost anything he thinks will benefit him politically,' he said.

'After standing on the stage, after the debates, I made it very plain we will not have an all-volunteer army.

'And yet this week...' he continued, before suddenly realising the gaffe and shouting: 'We will have an all-volunteer army.'

'Let me restate that: We will not have a draft.

'No matter what my opponent tries to tell people and scare them, we will have an all-volunteer army,' promised the president, who is known for frequent verbal stumbles.

'The only person talking about a draft is my opponent.

The only politicians that supported a draft are Democrats, and the best way to avoid a draft is to vote for me,' he said.

Nice try though. This whole liberal mentality that Bush will restore the draft is ridiculous. He will keep the all-volunter army.

He will not reinstate the draft. You people need to get over your paranoia. Military numbers are relatively on par with where they should be as far as enlistment goes. The military has seen a slight decline but nothing drastic or anything to be concerned about.

What are you talking about Graves? He clearly said there wasn't going to be a draft. Then he said there was. Then he heard his base's opinion out in the crowd, and changed his mind again. What a flip flopper that President Bush is...

Actually, this thread was supposed to be a joke. Obviously, he would not say in a speech that he is reinstating the draft. Even if he wanted a draft, that would just be idiotic. Political suicide. You people take things too seriously.

What's this world coming to? Bush scare tactics? Not quite. There is a terror threat. Camp Kerry has said that Bush will not protect this nation. Kerry's best bud Ted 'Drunk in Chappaquidick' Kennedy said the US would be more likely to be attack by nukes if Bush was President. Terror is a threat that needs to be assessed. I can't blame either side for saying we will be safer under them, it is something that as a nation we must truly decide who will protect us.

Ok, how's this? It's not my fault you're a complete idiot, and can't understand what was clearly a less than serious tone in my original statement. I'm not about to start playing to the lowest common denominator in my posts. If you get it wrong, well, newsflash, Hawking: I don't give a fuck, because that would be 'your fault'. I'm not going to be putting a disclaimer on everything I say with a statement of its political purpose, and if you have a problem with that, you can go to hell. Is it really that big a threat, are you really so touchy that I can't take a lighthearted jab at an error from a speech without some arrogant, self-righteous 'Bush-can-do-no-wrong', prick taking offense and making a hardline stand against it, as if it were important? You have to take up everything as a cause, don't you. My God, if Kerry came up with a 'Stop drunk driving by minors' policy, you'd find a way to oppose it. People like you are the problem with American politics these days. Well, one of them, anyways.

God, what happened to the worthwhile NS conservatives? Skiinstead and RHCP are gone, and even BigJ doesn't post anymore. Capurnicus is too preoccupied with the Sox (Go anyone-who-isn't-the-yankees, by the way) to deal with anything political. At least ATLRedneckskiwhatever is gone, though. Still, overall, the newer right on here is more than a little diappointing... and we have to deal with punk_rider, on top of this. BigJ, if you're reading this, please bring some order to your side.

Well seriously if people stop joining the military and we continue to involve ourselves in military action around the globe we won't have much choice other than to reinstate mandatory service. Plenty of countries have mandatory service and plenty of Americans have died this way in the past. What makes us better than them? But if that acid thing is true (which I've heard) they say you are legally insane if you've eaten more than 7 hits of acid througout your lfietime. Pretty funny considering I've eaten that in a sitting plenty of times hah. I feel a little crazy but I am in control

THE DRAFT IS NEVER GOING TO BE REINSTATED. Can you imagine the rioting that would go on if it was? Reinstating the draft would cause more domestic harm in rioting and whatnot than the foreign good that it would bring by the means of a war. It would be counter-productive.
