This is actually quite funny, and I'm all for it. The largest drink size in fast food joints in Finland is mostly 0,5L (roughly 17oz) and while this is personal experience, I don't ever remember finishing my drink completely, and even if I've taken it with me I've usually tossed it in a bin with a little left.

I've been a soda junkie most of my life, but I couldn't be more glad those days are long behind.

I mean not impacting me but I was sort of speaking on behalf of those who do buy soda. We just got Mormons who water down our alcohol. I don't frequently drink soda, though. People always ruin the fun for other people.

I'd still like to hear you expand on this. According to the source, 2 litre bottles of soda are still available for as cheap as 99 cents in NYC, there is no real ban on buying more than 16 ounces of soda, just a small limitation cup size for something that while good-tasting in small amounts, is now cut down to a very, very slightly smaller amount. Very similar on how McD's was limited to not ask for Supersized meals during purchases as it absolutely, definitely has an impact on the already-overaching healthiness of the "meal".

It's hard to put into words what I'm going for here, but these are exactly the kind of limitations and boundaries that will help the world become a better place. It's not stepping on your lawn and telling you "you can't do that", it's a big fuck you to the HFCS industry from one of the most influential cities in the world, and that if anything is one of the best things that could happen.

I'm glad the government in NYC decided their funding was best spent voting on this.

"Everything else was taken care of, so we naturally moved on to soda portions. We definitely believe this won't make a fucking difference in any way and we're happy it only took 8 days to hash it out."

And here we go again with the inane Static responses, devoid of any and all actual content for further discussion. It's not like this has been going on for years and years.

Sure, I may be biased as I support a proposed fast food tax, coming from a country where there is already a candy tax, a sugar tax, all snacks, sodas and vending machines eliminated from school prpoperty (won't stop everyone sure), most shops have banned energy drinks from kids under 15 (could be upped to 18 soon enough) and so on, and so on.

It's the small and gradual changes that can really affect the world rather than swooping in and trying to say something is denied completely from the beginning. People will learn, or so I do hope.

This. When I realized how much money i was wasting on buying drinks everywhere i went, i switched to a water bottle and i feel way better. I think its wrong to tell people what they cant buy, but this is bound to have a positive impact, even if its the wrong way to do it.

I don't know how many tax dollars go into healthcare in the USA, but when this law comes to Canada (inevitable) and really all initiatives against obesity/ any unhealthy lifestyles it's goin to save us all money. Us here referring to tax payers who are healthy, and skinny. And the same argument can be made against smoking: it's the taxpayers who suffer because we have to pay for your cancer treatment/ diabetes medicine whatever. I'm all for free choices and less government intervention but not when it costs me money for something I didn't do.

But this. This here hinges on the most important aspect of the whole discussion, and the government/city intervention on the matter.

What can you limit? What should you limit? Should we limit a purchase of 1500 nails for a nailgun to just a maximum of 1000, for health and hazard reasons? This could go for much and most items sold in bulk, in stores, around the US, around the world. How much chemical distillers or halogen lights can someone buy from a drug store or a green house depot? Those could be attributed, in high amounts, to drug manufacturing, growing and sales. Thinking logically, some of these restrictions are completely feasible, while some have no actual or real basis, hurting the freedom of the customer, not simply making them walk to another store but completely banning them from the amount of purchase in the first place. Sure, we could come to that in this discussion.

But this is about minimizing the size of a soda cup in one city of the United States to a so-called "world average" Large Size. It won't ban anyone from buying more, it won't affect those who crave soda so to get it from a store for the much, much fairer prices than offered at fast food joints - no, but it will make at least a bit of a difference and hopefully set an example.

i hope you guys that are flipping out realize that its only in places regulated by the city.for example, 7-11s arent, so theyre still going to sell soda larger than 16oz. also, duane reades and other stores are still going to sell 2 liter bottles etc. you guys should know what the fuck youre talking about before you say whats constitutional and what isnt.

New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg claims he will appeal a New York judge's choice to overturn the town's ban on sweet beverages served in cups larger than 16 ounces. The soda ban was supposed to have gone into impact on Tues, March 12, but it was overturned right before.
