bio question

okay i have this take home test for biology, and i cant find one of the questions anywhere. The question is 'molecules that are (blank) dissolve best in water.' a-polar, b-non polar, c-ionic, or d- covalent.

anyone know this?

polar... we just finished this unit in bio, and water molecules are polar. so that would make most sence...

its definately not ionic (thats between metal and non-metal and are in fact weak in water). covalent bonds share bonds. they are between 2 non-metals. polar are unequal sharing and non=polar are equal sharing. acording to my notes from last year (i saved ap bio for some reason), h20 has polar bonds (hydrogen bonds). this is what i can say. i think its right.

salt (NaCl) possess an ionic bond ... I think that salt may be soluble in water.

it is a chem question as well, not just a bio question.

polar is the answer

When the table salt molecules go into water, they go in as Na+Cl- molecules. These molecules are strongly polar, since one half is very positive and the other is very negative. The O side of the water molecules (which are partially negative) orient themselves toward the positive sodium ions. At the same time, the H sides of the water molecules begin to orient themselves toward the negative chloride ions. As the water begins to surround the ionic halves of the salt molecule, the charges on each ion are now being accomodated by the partial charges of the water molecules, and the two ions are less and less attracted to each other. This culminates in a breaking apart of the salt molecule, and a complete surrounding of each ion by water.

this basically shows an example of a polar molecule in water, which did dissolve. non polar molecules don't break up in water, and i am 100% sure since i double checked my answer for you.

polar dissolves polar...BUT...what about NaCl, that dissolves pretty stink'n well in water

my final answer is..you shouldn't ask the people on newschoolers this question, just look in your bio book eh
