Alright, here it is
If you ever plan on skiing in the rain, get somthing 20,000 plus
if you plan on chillin in the lodge when its rainin but going out when that rain turns to dumping down snow, get something 10,000 plus
If you only ski when your grandma feels like coming with you, then dont even worry about it
you can build a thousand bridges, but you suck one dick and your known as a cocksucker.. not a bridge builder.

AHHH TRUE, BREATHABILITY IS IMPORTANT, OTHERWISE WE COULD JUST LINE OUR COATS IN RUBBER
BUT YOU SWEAT FROM THE INSIDE AND IT HAS TO BE ABLE TO ESCAPE, OR YOU GET SOAKED ANYWAYS

Or you could just get something with 20'000mm and be set for everything.
In the Northwest it's not IF you will ski in the rain, but more like WHEN you will ski in the rain.

What you should do couloir is ski them for the winter, and post every two weeks about how dry or non-dry you are staying, so that people don't have to listen to people like me just talk shit about non-waterproof stuff. If it works, there's nobody better than you to say so, cuz I sure as fuck aren't going to be wearing 3k pants. So let us have it.

i have a question about waterproofing...how do they determine these numbers? is there some kind of test they go through? or do they just pull numbers out of their asses? are all companies using the same tests for waterproofness?

Tech specs:
Waterproofing is measured in millimeters of pressure. Let's say you stretch out the fabric and place a large tube with water on top, then a fabric with a waterproofing of 5000 (mm) can withstand water from a tube that's 5 meters long (that's a little more than 5 yards for you non-metric morons).
Waterproofing above 2000 is regarded as being waterproof from precipitation. Needless to say, if you sit on your ass in the snow, the pressure on the fabric rises, you heat the snow beneath you, etc. - you get a wet ass if your waterproofing is only 2000.
Another thing is 'breathability':
Measured in 'gram per squaremeter per 24 hours'.
Let's say you get a one squaremeter piece of fabric. You stretch it out over a big container of water. You then measure the amount of grams of evaporated water over 24 hours. So if you have a breathability of 4000, it means that it will allow 4000 grams of water to evaporate in 24 hours (that's 4 liters). Usually fabric with a breathability of 2000 and above is 'breathable'.
You wanna get a good combination of the above two.
The way the company's handle this is by 'coating' or by 'membranes'. The latter usually being better, but also a little more expensive...

^ Pretty much right on. Adjust your breathability for your region -- a 20k waterproof/15k breathable fabric will get wet before a 20k waterproof/5k breathable jacket on the west coast. However, the further east you go, the more breathable a fabric should be -- its called temperature gradients. Siver Cartel is a bunch of east coast jibbers, so they make clothing for east coast jibbers. They obviously have no clue about people skiing big snow on the west coast. But then again, fruit booters don't crash.

helly tech is 10,000mm. it says on the tag which that its minimum 10,000 after washing. it's a 3 layer laminate so it won't wear out.

is there any percentile of waterproofing, like 10,000 is 70%, because i bought a used jacket from a guy and he said it was 100% waterproof, and i believe him because ive skied in rain with it and i was perfectly dry

where have you found the waterproofing levels for your jackets, is it on a website or on the actual jacket, because i dont know which jacket i have off of the obermeyer website and im pretty sure its not on any of the tags, so does anyone else who has an obermeyer jacket know how to find the waterproofing level
