RCMP hunt for survivors after avalanche near Panorama ski resort
CALGARY — Crews continue searching a B.C. mountain for up to a dozen people after an avalanche was triggered near the Alberta border.
RCMP said the slide was initially reported around 2:30 p.m. in an out-of-bounds area outside Panorama Mountain Village resort.
Two skiers were rescued in the area of Taynton Bowl. One suffered possible spinal injuries.
Cpl. Grant Simpson said the avalanche was “fairly significant.”
Details are slowly coming in and Simpson said search crews aren’t sure how many others, if any, were swept up in the avalanche.
“We’re grasping for straws at this point,” he said. “With any luck they’ll lock onto beacons if there are more buried.”
The two probe teams have been slowed by rugged terrain. Simpson said crews are also forced to tread carefully to avoid causing another slide.
“You constantly have to be aware of what’s above and below you,” he said.
A moderate to considerable avalanche danger was reported in the Purcells area on Sunday, according to the Canadian Avalanche Centre.
Panorama Mountain Village is nearly 300 kilometres southwest of Calgary. A representative from the resort declined to comment.
Two skiers have been rescued after they were swept up in an avalanche outside the boundary of the Panorama ski resort near Invermere, B.C. on Sunday afternoon.
The pair were caught in the slide at around 1:30 p.m. PT and have since been taken to hospital. Police believe one of the two may have suffered spinal injuries.
Witnesses had reported seeing more people in the area of the avalanche, Columbia Valley RCMP said. A search to find any survivors was launched, and police said later they were confident no one else was caught in the avalanche.
Search crews had found no evidence of any other victims in the snow and planned to continue scouring the area until 6 p.m. PT, Cpl. Grant Simpson said.
