I need help picking out skis I PROMISE I HAVE A UNIQUE SITUATION

alright so heres the deal, Ive been skiing for a long time. I rode a lot of park way back in the day like 1998-2004.... I still jib off stuff and hit smaller features but 3 concussions, torn acl, and issues with L1,L2 caused me to tone it back for a big portion of the time between 2004 and now. I gained a bunch of weight but im 6 months in to the weight loss and getting back into shape feels great. My skiing is getting way better. I currently ride line prophet 100 and they are dope on big groomers and for basically bombin around. The problem is before these skis i rode center mount park skis and I loved how playful they were, Now with look px12s on my prophets, i feel like ive got bricks on my feet. I want a playful rockered all mountain ski that would still be a blast in the park. I weigh about 245 currently so i need a beefier ski but i want it be playful. i want to be able to bonk off stuff, slide boxes, butter off shit and just have more fun! i love 100 underfoot but i dont know if i can keep that with the other requirements. Anyone have any ideas. I would consider myself a very capable skier i can handle any condition, i love pow but ive got args already. anybody wanna give me an idea of what ski would make sense for me

Actually 108 but who's countin really? For real though, my buddy is a bigger guy. (ex college football player. Like 6'3" 245.). He's been watchin me rock the bacons for park/all mountain. Now he's got em and loves em. Anyone who does will tell ya that once ya go fat, ya never go back.

If you don't mind the width, and I know you said you already have ARGs, but dude demo the opus. The bacons are an amazing ski. If you can't demo first and want to be sure get the bacons. If you can demo the opus though....wow. It's 118 underfoot. It's marketed as a freestyle pow ski but my god is that the most fun all mountain ski I've ever ridden. I own both and my opus was supposed to be for pow/big mountain only. Bacons for park/all mountain. This has worked out pretty good up until about mid feb. I'm starting to take my opus out for everything now. It's wide and noticeable but once you get used to going edge to edge on hardpack, wow. It slays everything. It's so much fun in the park. I try not to grind em too much but ya almost can't help it cause they're jus too much fun. Both those skis are amazing. No matter what anyone tells you, they are both true one ski quivers. The bacons are obviously more versitile and easier to throw around but if you don't mind width....those opus' are phenomenal. Highly recommend a demo at least.

If a wider ski is indeed an option, I would personally recommend the ON3P Jeffrey. Just a bit wider at 108mm, and more stable Jeronimo that is more than capable all over the mountain and in the park as well.

Since you have fucked your knee(s) pretty good, I would NOT get anything much more than around 100mm underfoot, because you get more deflection with more surface area (duh), and it's harder on the knees. Get something that can truck, go right through crud.

In all fairness, (even though the OP didn't say it), the bacons do bust through crud whereas the opus will float that stuff. My point was that using the knee as an excuse is a non-issue. I've had waaay extensive injuries all to one leg and still ski the opus. Including a torn ACL. Plus I only included the injuries I felt were relevant to the argument. Shit just five weeks ago I had two plates and 14 screws installed. Ya know what I was doing 3 weeks ago? Backcountry lines in big cottonwood. Haha. Jus sayin. Injury is a state of mind. You can let it define you and milk the shit out of it or you can get back on the horse. Know what I mean?

It's pretty clear that you love and swear by the Opus, but they are soft compared to many skis, and personally I find they get knocked around a lot by crud. At least the crud I'm talking about. Hard moguls, hardened powder, blocks of hard snow and ice, ice patches, all that shitty on piste stuff. Take for example the 4FRNT EHPs with 116 underfoot however less rocker, way stiffer, and a 40m (!!) radius. Tried my friends and those things make my Opus feel like squirrely noodles. Just saying. Also, you can't "float" on true crud lol that doesn't even make sense.

If you're gonna actually say that a 118 underfoot is an excellent one-ski quiver, you're out of your fucking mind. If that was actually so, there wouldn't be such a massive bulk of narrower skis and there wouldn't even need to be a market for them. Seth Mo once stated "if you're good, you can ski any ski anywhere" and I agree with that, but not everyone else is a competent skier that can handle something fat when it doesn't snow. The Opus doesn't "slay" everything, YOU slay everything. For fucks sake I can take my 215 DH's just about anywhere with a bit of determination, but that doesn't mean it "slays" everything.

I have half an ACL in one knee and my daily go-to ski is a pair of Hellbents. A friend of mine has popped his right ACL twice and left once and he also rocks 'bents on a pretty regular basis. As mountainviper said, you can't let an injury define you.

As for OPs question... Atomic Blog, or maybe the K2 Kung Fujas? Bit of a noodle though. Or if you can find some older style (105 waist) Obsetheds they're a good ski. Or if you've got plenty of cash and want something unique-ish and awesome, Kingswood Rocketypes.

i love all the advise. Ive heard the opus may be to soft for me but i also have thought about the bacons. I love line. but all the techs ive talked to think im going to think the bacons and opus are too soft. I still consider both of them contestants. Hey viper can you throw your buddy on the opus and and tell me what he thinks? I also am curious which year bacon he rides? I rode the 2010 the last one before rocker and i wasnt that stoked...Felt like I wasnt super confident however i did take it to high Campbell lift at crystal mtn in wa within 5 runs and there were some gnar ice moguls and three day old fresh tracked the fuck out and i didnt feel comfy on em. idk i love all the responses. I guarantee my purchase will come from this thread! +k for errr body

If you want to save some money I would look at some Prophet 115's from last year or this year's Influence 115, those would be stiffer and more forgiving i.e. land backseat you won't wash out as easy, etc.

Yes many people ride phatties as their one ski but there is also a reason why 80% of the people on an average snow day are on something narrow.

I personally would not consider the Prophet 115's or Influence 115's to fall under the "more fun" category. Maybe you do, but I don't think they would fit in with the type of skiing the OP is looking for.

I would personally recommend the Jeronimo's or Jeffrey's, and that is based on my own personal experiences with both skis (I owned 181 Jmo's not 186's, but I do currently own 186 Jeffrey's). From what I've understood, the 186 Jmo's have increased stability over the 181 Jmo's of years past. For the 100mm range, the 186 Jmo would be the ideal everyday stable yet playful ski for the entire mountain, powder in the morning and park laps or bombing groomers in the afternoon. If you want the same feel with slightly larger dimensions and increased floatation and stability, the 186 Jeffrey is your ski. I am not as big of a guy as the OP, but 6'2" and 195 lbs, I am still a fairly good size that I have found overpowers softer skis. My personal favorite one ski quiver will always be the 191 Caylor, it really does not ride like a 120mm waisted ski, but that's not the point.

The Moment PB&J in a 188 is also a good option. I don't have any personal experience with Moment, but I've heard nothing but good things about Moment and the PB&J skis in particular.

Stick with something domestic and support the indie ski companies that build their skis with a passion that only skiers building skis for skiers can offer. How passionate about skiing do you think the Chinese workers building Line and K2 skis are?

Viper I agree with the wide skis! I love my args for their purpose. I've done sig strength training and my knee is currently a non issue. I play through pain either way. I would really love to know how ur buddy likes the bacons. I was so close to buying them but the techs talked me out of it. My biggest problem is there are very few people who actually understand how much weight and leg strength can change the overall feel of a ski. A guy that weighs 165 may love the on3p jmos but that's like saying a Ferrari handles great when it's got 1 guy driving it and therefore it should act exactly the same with two fat people a full tank of gas and the boot filled with cement. It's not going to act the same bc it isn't the same car anymore. People said the prophets would float....they dive on me. The args do float hahah get ur friend have him hit some small and med jumps then have him butter then have him bomb through the crud and a lap through the trees. Report back and me love u long time.

For whatever it's worth, I didn't know it was possible to love a pair of skis as much as I love my Jeffreys.  I'm 6' 4" and 205 pounds so a pretty big guy myself.  They've ripped everything from MN and MI ice to southern CO knee deep powder for me this year.  Also, I took them out to Summit County between Christmas and New Year's and hit more rocks than I can count but the bases only have some surface scratches.  If you want to be able to float at your size, I'd definitely go Jeffrey over Jmo.  They're also gonna give you more stiffness than the Bacon's which you need, but are still really lively and playful.  They pop of jumps and are sooooo stable and smooth on landings.

I ski the Jeffery (12/13), and the 186 J-mo. FWIW I'm fucking man sized(220). Both these ski's hold up under pressure, rip the shit out of the mountain while still being playful.

The on3ps are quality and I'd def consider em OP. As far as the bacons, they are soft in the tips. Pretty solid underfoot though and I've never had a chatter issue. My bigger buddy who just got em says they rip everything and it's his fav ski. Says quite a bit considering he's been a huge surface fan and wouldn't ski anything else. As far as the opus, I dunno. Peeps will swear its too soft but if I were a bettin man, I'd say it was based on a hand flex in the store. I say that because I've ridden ep pros and chets, etc. those skis are soft. No friggin way you would enjoy groomers on those. Well the Chet's maybe but def not the ep pros. The opus IMO rocks groomers. It's important to understand that I'm no spring chicken either. I know a stiff ski. I've been skiing since before twin tips and rode everything from mogul skis to gs skis. As far as not diggin last years bacons though....I'd recommend against the opus. Or at least demo first. It's similar to last years bacons in feel underfoot. It turns much nicer and feels stiffer. It's a better version of last years bacons if that makes sense? This years bacons feel nothing like last years. They're like a wider crypto with early rise to me. Things turn on a dime. I'd recommend a demo if possible though before ya buy anything. Read as many reviews as you can find. I'd hate for ya to drop money on somethin you end up hatin.

Ya know why? Cause it's what I know. You'll never see me comment in a klint, Sierra, or bluehouse thread. Know why? I've never ridden em. Never owned em. Occasionally I'll throw down an opinion on a ski I've ridden but don't own. I'll even look at a "what ski" thread and not reply if it's not relevant to what I know or own and ride everyday. This guy is big and weighty. A wide ski will add stability to his center of gravity. Well guess what? I own a ski that works great for that. My names not orange. The OP knows its personal opinion. But yeah I do have a bias cause I own and ride em everyday. I'd wanna hear from someone like that if I were about to make a purchase too.

Crap I missed that lower part of that post. Already done. When he first got em we were in P-city. Now it's important to note that this dude rocked surface doubletimes for everything. They have soft tails and shovels for tips. Anyway hee did trees, drops, jumps, groomed, ungroomed, and fresh. That was all in a two day demo. Then he bought em. Said they were way more stable than even the surface pow skis he's ridden. Way better than his DTs for park/groomers. And he lived em in the trees. He's about your size too. That said though, he has not ridden many skis outside of surface so his love for the bacons could be based on nonexperience with other skis ya know?

Yeah best I can say is that the new bacons are not noodles. They hold an edge just fine. Even for a guy your size. The bonus to them not being as stiff as your prophets is that they're way more jibtackular. You can butter em. They have nice pop to em with the camber underfoot. I'm 6'1" and hover around 190-195. For me they're perfect. As far as my bud who's as big as you, I'll tell ya that I've seen him land stuff on the bacons recently that his DTs tails used to wash out on. They've def upped his game. But he's coming from somethin softer. You coming from prophets, they may feel soft. If it makes sense though, from your description you want something more playful than the prophet. That would be the new bacons or even the blends. All that said, I have heard nothing but good stuff about on3p. I've yet to ride them but everyone I know who owns them loves them and says they're bulletproof. Something to consider.
