K2 Recoils - Long enough for me? Alternatives?

Hello,

I have been on the site www.google.com, it is very good and I have spend many weeks using it to work out the ski that would suit my requirements.
My conclusion is the K2 Recoil.

I am UK based (not practical to demo skis in UK from where I live).
I ski 1 week per year in France.
Most of my weeks in recent years have involved no fresh snow, so I only expect to ski groomers and the park 99% of the time.
I am 193cm (6'4") tall, 94kg (14st 12lbs) heavy
I am a novice in the park but would consider myself Advanced to Expert on the piste
I don't have a massive budget. £450 with bindings package, ($750 US for the same skis and bindings)

I want a ski that carves well on the groomers with some pace.
I also like skiing switch on groomers and goofing around. In the next few years I want to improve my switch skiing and use it much more places in the park so switch performance is high up there on the agenda.
If I am not messing around on the piste, I will be messing around in the park. Probably spend 70%/30% Piste/Park.
I want rocker front and back and figure if I am lucky one year I will be able to manage a bit of off piste.

The K2 Recoil seemed to fit this bill but I am concerned about the length.
I usually hire 180cm twin tips (but have been forced to Ski 171cm Twin tips before which I managed with).
Buying the skis I will have to live with them a lot longer.
With front and rear rocker, is even the 179cm Recoil going to be too short for me? How many cm contact when on groomed piste am I losing due to front and rear rocker?

Will the 179cm Recoil be fine for me? Has anyone any other alternatives? I deem the K2 Sight too soft for my ability/weight and others I have considered seem to be over budget.

that's right there around the longest most park(/allmtn) skis are made, sure the rocker will make it feel a little shorter but that's probably about the best you'll do for length. IMO if you've done your research and decided that's a good ski for you i'd say go for it. have fun!

There are longer park skis if that's primarily what you're worried about. I believe Scott makes one of their punishers in a 185/186? K2 also measures their skis differently from other companies - if you line up a 179 K2 with a 181 Rossi for example, you'll find the K2 is slightly longer. Always add about 3 centimeters to the length of a K2 ski, so the 179 measures around 182ish when compared with other brands.

I think the Recoils will be long enough for you, and would be a great ski. K2's are generally more damp than other company's due to their triaxial braiding, so to a lot of people that enjoy the pop of a fresh pair of Rossi park skis or Salomon park skis, the K2's feel very dead. I personally love the dampness and feel that it greatly adds to your ability to push through shitty snow - Rossi and Salomon park skis may be more snappy, but they scare the shit out of me if I'm hauling ass because they do not feel as stable. On rails you'll notice this as well, Salomon's always make me feel like I'm going to nut myself at any moment where as K2's feel much more stable. I have not skied the Recoils, but have skied most of K2's previous park lines.

Ah, ok. I'm surprised K2 added camber to the recoil, the revivals were plently poppy whether done correctly (through your hips) or ollie style. I'm saddened they added camber to the revivals to get the recoil, but I'm sure it still skis like a dream, thanks for the info.

check out the 186 jeronimo. they measure a bit longer too (my 181 on3p's and 179 k2's both measure out to about 186) and are a super solid ski. and the added length would be good if you want it

179 k2s measure about 183, 181 jmos measure to 184. that is the material length. when measuring with the ski manufactured it will measure true 181 for on3p and 179 for k2

Just an update for anyone finding this thread at a later date.

Went for the K2 Recoils in the end.
Got back from Tignes last week and loved them.

Didn't find the 179s too short. Got them with Griffon Schizo bindings which I also liked a lot. Tended to move the binding position no more than once a day though and took care and time when doing it but had no problems.

Best ski I've ridden personally (although I've mostly ridden older twintips like Salomon 1080s, old Rossi scratch etc) this one seemed to be able to do it all. Stable at high speed on the piste and I've never spent so much time off piste before, definitely think the all terrain rocker made that easier going and more fun.

Didn't rail much on them but not expecting any problems there.

Looking forward to spending more time on them.

alpha 1? Its a really stiff ski with tip and tail rocker. Its designed to be a park ski so it preforms good there. Took em out to Quebec (real skiing) and I found they were pretty damn good and fast. (sintered base) We also got about 20-30cms of powder while we were there. This was definitely more then the alpha 1s could handle comfortably. (mostly skied in glades) But I mean I still rode all day and had fun. So i'd say thats a pretty good option

Well if your that tall and weigh that much, i would suggest not getting a ski thats soft. Fet something stiffer, and if i had the aerodynamic properties of a skyscraper like you, id get a 188+ for park. Moment tahoes might do you well
