What to know before starting filming with DSLR ?

I searched around on NS but didn't be able to answer my question.. And i thought that it should have a sticky about it.. but anyway,

I was wondering what i need to know before getting my t2i (it's in the mail right now) if i only got a gopro before..

I know that:

ISO speed: A measurement of how quickly your camera’s sensor absorbs light.

Shutter speed: A measurement of how long your camera’s shutter is open for when you take a shot.

Aperture: A measurement of how wide the shutter on your camera’s lens opens up when you take a shot.

But on what base did i adjust them ? Is there are chart or something like that that tell me how to do? and why did i need to do it ?

It ends up meaning the same thing, being the sensitivity of film to light. Fast means it's more sensitive (higher number iso) and lets in more light. Slow is less sensitive, and lets in less light (low number iso). But yeah, I was taught that it was the size of the grains of silver as well. That's why it gets grainy when you get higher iso's.

Thanks a lot for all the help !

i got my t2i 2 days ago and today, it was my first chance to shoot with it at a hockey game.. there is one of my favorite shot !

Tell me what you think and how it could be better !

didnt look like you did any color correction, did you? with shots like that, dont do much, but you could have touched up on a few of your colors. Also, i think this shot could have been a bit cooler if you were zoomed in a bit more. I know some stadiums/rinks have restrictions on telephoto lenses, but being a little bit tighter on the shot would have been nice, IMO at least.

Nice picture. I like the composition, but as said, the colors could use a little work.

i just have the 35-85 kit lens right now.. i can't zoom more than this hahah :P
