Setting up Camp at Hood

   Hey everyone, i got the idea the other day that i want to spend at least one month of my summer camping at hood. I just need to figure out some logistics. I'm lookin at renting an old camper from my dad that hes had since he was my age. not sure if it will be cheaper to rent a local one or go pick my dad's up in New Mexico ( i live in Portland).  

 i also want to get a ball park idea of how much $$ i'm gonna be spending on food, gas (propane),and any other necesities.  i'll probably bring a keg with me as well.

 some questions; where is the best place to set up? what is the weather like? how much spare cash should i have, and for what purposes? any other tips would be helpful. i'm really low key and don't need much. i feel like should have plenty saved up after tax returns and all.

i just moved to the northwest 3 months ago and im recovering from a blown knee so im trying to ski as much as possible when summer hits. also it looks like im gonna be mobbin' solo at this point so if anyone is interested in joining the party PM me and we can figure it out.

sorry if this post is out of season, i just wanna get everyhing figured out early with no stress.thanks guys, i searchbarred and couldnt find anything. ++++k for any tips or helpful opinions.

thanks man, yea i thought about it. Oregon forum doesn't get to much traffic, and i figured that people come from all over N. America to shred hood in the summer and most of the campers are from outside oregon. but i'll probably throw it in there anyways, haha

isnt hood like right next to portland? if so, i would just wing it and make a trip like halfway through the month back to portland to resupply

-Camp at the airstrip. People in regionals can give you directions.
-Sometimes camps will let you ride their private parks if you help dig and build in the afternoon.
-Hike public park after the lifts close as well. They let people stay for a couple hours usually.
-Be prepared to pay out the ass for a summer pass.

yes, airstrip is good for trailers. but Portland is like 45 minutes away from govy. It would probably be cheaper to just drive from portland when you want to ski wouldn't it?

Not at all. That's so much gas money, plus camping is cheaper. And from what I've heard, you don't even need to leave the airstrip for a good time.

you can make it as cheap or as expensive as you want it to be. and i would definately go pick up your dad's camper, cause renting one would be pretty pricy..

yeah i think its like 2 weeks but you can just move to a different spot. Bring tarps, cheap healthy food, and beer.

whooopps sorry didnt read it all. Weather is alright in june. Cloudy and some rain sometimes. But most of the time it is just sunny. stay at the airstrip or if you want to pay a small fee trillium lake is nice. tickets are not cheap. $900 for a summer pass and like $54 for a day pass. You dont need much you might not even need that camper. I stayed in a tent its fine. Its nice and warm up there from mid june to august even into september.

Govy is such a fun place to be in the summer tons of people everywhere. Hood life is the best in the summer. PM with anymore questions brotha. Im from portland

A lota people stay in govy

Summer pass at hood is $800

You wont need any heat in the camper, its not bad at night, a ton of people like Walker and Parker White slept in tents all summer

From what I have heard jobs are all minimum wage

The skiing is money, but idk if i could last a month unless i was going with friends, obviously you could meet people

Find some hot tubs to poach

Windells has full time diggers, so you wont be able to dig for them and ride there park unless they hire you

Dont poach Windell's lane, or OCHO will kick you out

You can normally hitch hike up to hood pretty easily

Bring a few pairs of pants and multiple hoodies, takes a few days for stuff to dry unless you dont mind skiing in wet gear

not its like and hour and 15 to govy from portland. Traffic sucks all holy hell to its just getting worse. Stay in govy it is so much better and so much more fun.

Your main concern as of know should be paying for passes. You can always apply for a job at tline. They give you a day pass for everyday you work.

hmmm I must be thinking of sandy then, you're most likely right seeing as you probably live there though haha. I'll be camping up there during the spring pass, if anybody wants to ski together hit me up!

thank you sooooo much guys!, everybody is being super awesome and helpful right now +k to everyone.
i didn't want to drive everyday because it would be way more expensive plus i prolly wouldnt get myself to ski every single day, not counting the amaizing experience i would get from hood livin'. and yes i do realise a t-line pass is around 900 i was planning on purchasing one tho. do i have to pay anything to park the camper at the airstrip? and anyone whos done something like this, around what kind of $$ made the whole thing happen? and I.B. and anyone else whos trying to do the same thing it might be cool to make a lil colony and make some new friends or something haha. you'll see me up there i'll be flying the New Mexico flag high on my camper if anyone wants to shred or chill. thanks again guys! this is why i love NS!

i camped at hood in may a few years ago. it was awesome, i moved campsites a lot because the weather was always changing, most of the time at night it would snow up at the higher camp sites and rain at the lower ones. i took off right before memorial day to go to sasquatch and cause my spring pass was ending, but it was awesome. i never paid to camp. i would go check out welches down the road from govy for the DQ and this rv camp. we got the code to get in the rv park and it worked all month, you could hit up a pool or shower there anytime. there was still a ton of snow while i was there so people had rails set up along side the road to tline a few times after the lifts were done. about money... just live cheap bring in food from town and dont buy anything from the mountain. bring pocket food during the day and feast at night. it wasnt really summer when i was there, but maybe some of that might help ya. id recommend anyone to check out hood, it was awesome

no airstrip is free. lock your camper tho. depends on how cheap you like to live. 900 plus food water. gas if your driving to tline. All though people hitch it to tline all the time its easy as hell.

me and some friends want to do the smae thing but see that im only 16 and my parents lost some trust with me over the summer it probaly wont be happening this year. but good luck to you bro and hope it all works out

i'm also thinking of doing this with a few friends for about 2-3 weeks. Or see if i can get enough to go to mhssc.

gotta see how much everything is, skiing hood for a month with some friends would be so much fun.

Take the dirt road across the street from the best western up and theres all kinds of solid spots. Camped there on and off for a month or so. 5 minute walk from everything in govy. If you cant afford a pass and dont mind being a mooch show up around 10 am when racers are coming down for the day. Wire cutters, some beers to trade, ability to keep it low key and a polite attitude are all you need for free tickets every day. Not the coolest thing but definitely the cheapest. (this is all theoretical knowledge..)  Best advice is to just get up there and figure it out as you go, make as many friends as possible and it will work out.

Clipping tickets is mad sketchy. They will ban you if they catch you or something like that. And it isn't that hard to catch you at the run out to the lot there.

Truth. Do it in the parking lot a little ways back though not at the run right in front of attendents. I heard they had some dudes dedicated to catching poachers so its definitely a huge risk. 1st time you'll be banned for a month or something, not the end of the world but probably the end of a dope summer. risk/reward i guess.
