I snowboarded for 6 years before switching to skiing this year, this site and my friends had a huge impact on me making the switch. I'm so glad I made the decision to switch to skiing, I feel so much more comfortable on skis than on a snowboard. If you do switch, you will most definitely not regret it.
But to answer your question about what skis and boots you should get, find the cheapest pair of twin tips(that are in good condition). I bought my pair from a friend for $60, and then find a cheap pair of boots on ebay. I got a pair of rear-entry raichle's for $15(old as hell I know). Have fun man, skiing is the absolute shit.
