SNOW: freeride/freestyle skiing game

SNOW is the first true freeride and freestyle game for skiers and snowboarders. Based on the free-to-play model, SNOW looks to restart the winter sports genre taking the player back to basics refining scale, physics and controls to capture the majesty of the mountain. SNOW is a game for riders, by riders.

SNOW will be released for free later this year and developed according to feedback from the community.

I totally agree on everyone complaining about not having any credits after they bought the early access...
I mean c'mon we helped you develop that game!

I already tweeted at them and they pretty much told me to fuck myself. I spent $60 for some gold skis. Whoopdeedoo. I cant believe they cant even give us 500 credits for helping them fun the damn game.

In my opinion, everyone who bought the game should get to keep the gear that was already released and any sequential gear that is released could cost credits. It is kind of annoying how they took away most of the gear that was previously available in the game and now require credits to get it back. I also noticed that the game is running way worse on my computer. I used to get consistently above 30 fps at 1080p in the previous version, but now I get 20 fps. Has anybody else noticed this?

I still get max settings at smaa 2x and 60fps with 1080. Barely fucking play though because i cant wear any of my actual god damn clothes...

THIS, I think if the SNOW team did this people would be complaining ALOT less. The best way for them to deal with this IMHO would be to give everyone who played early access all the gear that was originally unlocked, back to them, and maybe even like 1000 credits to spend on the new stuff that came out. Im not saying that everyone that plays should have all that gear, and they should charge money for that stuff for people coming in now that its F2P

I wouldn't even be mad if they at least unlocked A few more options of clothing for new players. Not even the worst freemium games stick you with one look if you don't decide to do any micro transactions. If you're going to have micro transactions in a game, you can't have half the game locked behind a pay wall.

Spent an hour on the beta last night...


The core gameplay is still not great - by this point they should have riding along and making a few turns feeling a lot more solid and, more importantly, a lot more fun than the beta is currently demonstrating.

I'd sort out the basics before even trying to move onto adding in tricks.


The new UI is a bit better, very clean and "Apple" style, but it's still not clear which icon you are selecting.

Performance is all over the place as well, it's early for optimization but the frame rate drops are very annoying.

Using real money to purchase in game items - if they are going to use the free to play model than why have we paid? Early access is one thing, but changing the entire pricing model is very under hand.

Still, it shows some promise and I really hope that the team can sort out these issues, as there is a lot of passion on show with what they have, but it needs a lot more work.

I really hope you didn't feel that way from our twitter conversation.

We totally get the community's response to the realization that items in-game cost money (and that the 300+ items that were part of the game before are not just given to you) but we do want you to understand the bigger picture. We are working on a blog post to explain our vision so you better understand the direction things are going.

Performance issues will be resolved over time, but as we fill the game with content the minimum requirements will increase. This is a AAA game with a robust physics engine - don't expect it to always run on a 5+ year old PC.

Controls and gameplay is always being tweaked. This takes time especially as we're still improving the physics model. Each small adjustment we make to the model requires the rest of the game to be tweaked so it's just finding a balance. Direct and detailed feedback will help us understand what you like/don't like.

We have ALWAYS mentioned that SNOW will be free-to-play. We unfortunately cannot simply give all the Early Access users the hundreds of items that were in-game previously. There will be plenty of ways to get the items you want without paying for them. We are making this game for you guys and take all your feedback seriously. Please be patient while we continue adding features into the game before passing judgement on the F2P model.

The game is not finished - we will be adding in leveling, rewards and drops to the game so that players who don't want to spend money but spend time playing the game can be rewarded as well with various items.

Not upset about stuff costing money im upset about the fact i wasted $60 when i could have spent $15 and gotten the same results. There is no reason for you not to give alpha players some credits especially with the overwhelming negative response that youre getting.

It really isn't. This idea could be harmful. SNOW is an indie game, AAA is reserved for big-budget titles for a reason - they have the budget and the resources to do whatever they want. Most indie developers would hate to be labelled with 'AAA', considering the standard of AAA games recently (AC:U, Destiny, Evolve, hell the last AAA that lived up to its hype was GTA:V).

I've mentioned before about the lack of innovation in the aerial mechanics, your response was that you didn't have the time/ manpower (ok maybe I'm reading in a little bit) to adopt a more creative/ better system. An AAA game would have done this.

Despite the UI, the graphics and all, SNOW does not feel as refined as an AAA game should be. Take skate. Let me take an extremely small component of skate 3 that is translated into SNOW. Celebrations. In skate you have 4 choices available, you map them to the d-pad on the controller. 4 buttons, 4 celebrations, only 4 ways you can use these? NO. Go back to skate, and try celebrating while in the air. Try spreading your arms out (I think it's the airplane celebration) while on a rail. Skate can do this because of it's advanced animation engine. In SNOW you can celebrate on the ground, once the landing animation is over. This rigid constraint is why the mechanics of skate are 100x more powerful than on SNOW.

Dude, I'm sorry, but I completely disagree, especially with your control idea. You proposed an extremely comlpex, difficult control system. To go back to the skate 3 analogue, it's incredibly simple. It is meant to be a fun game, not an in depth simulation. A balance needs to be achieved. They replied saying too many people would find it too hard if you changed the mechanics, which imo is completely fair enough: They are trying to make this already niche game available for as many people as possible, because if they did make the scheme like what you described, only people who are really into skiing and fairly accustomed to video games would be into it.

To the devs, I understand what you are doing, and I understand that you have said you would do this all along. Personally I don't like the F2P model, but that's just me, and if it works for you, well then it works. Maybe you should give a little bit more to some of the more major backers to the game, because a lot of us did put down a hell of a lot of money for this, and taking all of that away would kind of suck.

I didn't say my idea specifically, I said innovative. The current control system is not innovative. All I was saying is SNOW is not an AAA, which the devs seemed to think it is. It hasn't got the target audience, nor the resources, nor the breadth of ambition. SNOW have consistently put immersion before mechanics.

But still, going back to my aerial mechanics idea from a couple of pages back: that was not me saying 'this is the only innovative control scheme'. That was my proposal for how to get aerial motion onto one analogue stick. Not a single major video game in any sport, including action sports, has an aerial mechanics simulation that requires 3 analogue control axis (2 from an analogue stick and 1 from the triggers). There's a good reason for this: it's just too complicated.

Yes I'm talking from a controller-centric view, because this is the way most video games are made these days. Build for controller, port for PC. Keyboards are nothing more than buttons with definite on/off values, they suck as controllers in sports games where values between 0 and 100% are often required. I have FIFA and NBA on my computer, although I use a PS controller I could use a keyboard and mouse config. It's how all the big developers in sports do it, so I proposed a mechanism by which SNOW could. It wouldn't have been a mind-blowingly complex simulation, it would still have been a fun game, but it would have been a far better reflection of how a skiers control themselves.

I think the best think you guys can do is make the game cost an upfront fee of like $20-40. Then make a way that people can unlock gear or get credits by winning events, if people want to bypass the "earn your gear" aspect, you can still have an option to buy additional credits. I know that this game has been advertised as free to play, but I dont see how it will work that way. Best of luck to you devs, I wouldnt want to be you guys right now.

Indie and AAA are not opposites in our eyes. Indie refers to our independent state - we are privately financed and not relying on / controlled by a publisher. AAA refers to the quality and robustness of the game - we are building a genre defining experience that is highly detailed with a full range of features. Open world, free-to-play, live service, physics driven gameplay, dozens of brand partners etc. That is what makes a game AAA in our eyes. We appreciate that everyone defines AAA / Indie in their own way, but this is how we see it.

Innovation comes in many different forms. I would argue to say that we are innovating in a larger scope - we are building an experience that has not been created before. Sure, we might not completely reinvent how the character is controlled, but we need to take one step at a time. Yes, we are a small team so we can't go and reinvent everything - instead we use already defined rules and methods for things we know work and then can go back to them in the future if we feel like they can be improved.

There is nothing stopping us from allowing the character to celebrate while in the air or on a rail. We are building the game with CRYENGINE which is if anything more powerful than the engine that EA created for Skate. We simply don't see that as a necessary feature right now and therefore are not spending time on it. We'd rather focus on nailing the physics and feel of riding down the mountain.

Skate had nearly 100 people working on it, we are just hitting 12 last month. The original Skate was built over at least 3 years, we have been working for two and a half. Give us a chance :)

We are building SNOW as a game-as-a-service which means we will be working with our partners (over a dozen of the biggest brands, athletes and event organizers) to bring their content into the game every season. For us to continue to be able to do this, we need to charge money for certain aspects of the game (that do NOT affect gameplay or scope).

What people seem to forget is that there WILL be ways to unlock gear / content in the game without paying. We released the 0.5.0 Closed Beta build to start testing the store while we continue to develop the game. The next few updates will include player progression (XP / Leveling) features that will allow you to unlock and be rewarded with items and credits.

Does that make sense?

Will tricks performed in free play mode contribute to this, or will it only be contests? I've been playing the beta and I have to say I have really enjoyed it. The jump physics are really good, I like how you can no longer change your rotation too much, and I can finally land triples as well! Its coming along great, but I feel the rails were better in the update before. I haven't really skied the pipe either. Contests are pretty cool, but for some reason there are no thumbnails of the locations before I click which is a bit annoying. Over all on the GUI there are a few issues here and there, but there is nothing else major. I will write a bit more once I get a chance to play more. If we buy stuff now, will we be able to keep it forever?

- All forms of gameplay will result in XP which will contribute to your progression and unlock free stuff. We're working on a blog post to explain all of this.

- Glad you like the new rotation speeds. We have a few tweaks we want to make in the next (0.5.1) update (also on rail mechanics) so hopefully you think it's an improvement there too.

- Events will have posters added as we finalize them

- Anything you buy now will always be yours. We will never take them away from you!

Yeah Kind of. Im sure that you guys are doing the best that you can with everything, and besides the whole store thing the game is great! I love all of the new places.

When you joined the Early Access we clearly listed what items you were be rewarded with (founders set etc). We appreciate that we didn't make it clear to users that the items that they had in the alpha wouldn't be available in the closed beta and are therefore looking into what we can do to remedy this.

We have no intention to be evil or come off as money-grabbing. We have our users BEST interests at heart - just give us a chance to get all of the features in the game before losing all hope.

Well i can think of a couple easy ways to remedy it such as giving us our items back, giving us the value in credits of which we spent on the alpha version, or hell let us have our money back. As for you looking out for the best interest of the user, if that was the case then you wouldnt be having the people who actually helped somewhat fund the game become livid because you pretty much told them they wasted their money on a swt of retarded lookong virtual skis. Also you NEVER stated that the items available in alpha wouldnt be available in beta. As for you getting "all the features" in game you can fix the ability to freeze the camera with the 2 button, be able to actually ride rails, have the ability to actually turn, not just randomly die, not get stuck under snow when spawning, and i can go on for years but im sure you know the bugs.

While I haven't been following the drama too closely, it seems to me like users are upset that items they had before are no longer available to them. Which is understandable. However, if Snow devs clearly stated such items would no longer be available to players as the development of the game progressed, then I don't see the problem.

They may not have specifically stated that items would be removed by beta, but they did expressly state that you would eventually be able to play for free, and have to buy gear on its own. Also, when you bought the original game on steam it should have been pretty clear that you only get the items that is said you get, ie the founders kit etc. I can understand you are annoyed, but you must admit that it was going to happen, and although they could have been more clear about it, it was stated multiple times. I'm just stoked I get to play such an awesome ski game. No offence to shredsauce, but this is gonna blow it out of the water. With jump physics as good as they are now, honestly I'm pretty happy. Yeah its cool having the same outerwear as you do in real life, but it doesn't really matter that much in the grand scheme of things, and would cost 5$ to get again which is the price of a couple coffees.

SNOWTheGameIndie and AAA are not opposites in our eyes.


SNOWTheGameSkate had nearly 100 people working on it, we are just hitting 12 last month.


Two things:

1. You say that indie and AAA can be the same, yet you then say exactly why the aren't. The money (which leads to manpower) makes the difference. If you want to be AAA then find a publisher that'll fund you. That's the only way, unless you like being deluded, which brings me to my second point:

2. The arrogance to say that AAA refers to the 'quality and robustness' of your game is unbelievable. You are seriously implying that only AAA games can be high quality and robust, this is 100% bullshit and an offence to the video game industry, on which you rely. Go on steam, go to the indie tab. Look at the games there. I'll choose two examples: Assetto Corsa (the best racing sim to date), Kerbal Space Program. I hate to break it to you, but both of these games are higher quality and more robust than SNOW (KSP is still in beta too, AC came through steam early access). None of the developers of these games have the arrogance to compare themselves to the AAA world of high games, despite Corsa easily being on a level with them (KSP is the antithesis of a major video game).

Had a great session on this tonight, pad controls seem a lot better and started to feel like I can chain some moves together now.

We reduced how much you "lock" to the rails in 0.5.0 but it seems like it was too low. 0.5.1 will fix that!

Awesome! Sounds good - will check that out for sure :)

I'm loving this - played in first person for about an hour last night and it is so much fun threading between the trees.

Near-the-top-of-the-page NOOB POST (version 3, no changes)

A quick post with some FAQ's that seem to get asked all the time. Maybe a mod can attach some to the OP or I'll just repost this every page, just because it's really annoying when this thread gets bumped to read the same stupid question for the fiftieth time. Thought I should point out that I have nothing to do with the dev time, so everything below is my understanding of the situation.

Q: Where do I get it?
A: Buy the game here: http://store.steampowered.com/app/244930/
Register for (free) beta here, you should be invited in a few weeks: http://www.snowthegame.com/

Q: Will it come out for Mac/ when will it be out for Mac?
A: It's likely SNOW will come out for Mac in the future but SNOW do not control
when. SNOW is built using Cryengine, an engine that is currently only
compatible with windows. There have been rumours that Crytek are adapting
Cryengine for Mac, but I don't know any more about this.

Tl, dr: Mac could happen in the future, but not now.

Q: Will it come out for next gen?
A: SNOW has been announced for PS4, but there is no set timescale. It is
unlikely to happen until the game leaves beta, my guess is 2016 at the earliest.

Q: Can I play this on my mac?
A: Sort of. You can run Windows on your Mac in boot camp. I shall not tell you how to do this, use google. Virtual machines are inefficient.

Q: What system specs do I need?
A: From the steam page, minimum 2GHz dual core processor, 4GB RAM, lower-mid range GPU. SNOW will not run on computers using integrated graphics. You will get an error message and the game will fail to start. Steam is not idiot-proof and will not stop you buying the game. That is most macbooks and low-end laptops. Check before you buy, if you buy a game that doesn't work on your computer that's your fault and no-one elses.

Q: When will it be free?
A: Soon. Subscribe to beta through the link above.

Q: I paid for SNOW in alpha, do I get anything in the micro-transaction-land of beta?
A: No. SNOW have been quite clear about this from day one. You paid to support the development of the game, not to have any privileges.

as much as I love a rickroll couldn't have spent the time to actually write what the different setting does to the game? playing free roam on low is pretty much impossible since random rocks pops up all around me, never had this problem before. also there seems to be a bug somewhere in either the flatspin rotation or the screamin seamen grab that makes it speed up like crazy sometimes, kinda like the old truckdriver

could you just release some of the previous years cloths/gear for free when you introduce new gear each year or maybe gear from 2 years back that way some customization is there?

you could also give like 5 starting characters to choose from for free?
