Let me start by saying this,

I am very happy someone else wrote this aritcle for me. I've always been to lazy, and figured it would go unheard or no one would listen. I'm glad there are kids out there who realize this shit.

Before I get into anything else I have to point out one mistake, but only because this one mistake is a prime reason athletes in this industry get treated like shit.

By no means was/is the 1080 the best selling ski ever. infact it couldn't be further from the truth. I think what you ment was, it is the best selling twin tip of all ever. I don't know the truth of that statment either, but it is reasonable none the less.

Now that being said-

Support those who really support skiing. Every one stop, go back and read that sentance a few more times till its permantly planted in your head. Now that you know this, make it your wepon.

You worked a summer of of crapy minumum wage labor. the only reason you'd work in taco bell, or some other crap job is to save money and get a pair of twin tips. Finaly the day has come, you go to the store and buy some 1080's (doesn't have to be salomon, insert, Rossignol, Dynastar, etc.)
boom good bye money, hello twin tips. Meanwhile back in france some fat french salomon executive is laughing at you. Don't think that Salomon is the only company treating their riders like shit. Most of the big names out there aren't making nearly as much money as you think.

Twin tip skis make up a TINY and I mean TINY TINY TINY portion of big ski manufacturers total sales. There were less than 5,000 twin tips sold in the US TOTAL between all the manufacturers! Most big ski manufactures survive off of rental ski productions, rossignol makes over 10,000 pairs of rental skis alone every winter.

So why are they laughing? Because they take your 500 bucks and dump it back into rental ski development. Its like a little bonus for them, like finding quarters in a couch. Its simple economics, why the hell would they want to put money into somthing that is so little to them on paper? They make a couple hundred twin tips a year... so what? They aren't out on the snow, and they don't see the potential. They could care less.

So now you ask how do I make them understand? SUPORT THE COMPANIES WHO REALLY SUPPORT SKIING. Give it time, over the next few years there are bound to be rider centered companies poping up here and there, Snowboarding is a perfect example, All the ski manufactuers jumped on the wagon right off the bat and failed miserably because they brought their skiing industry bullshit to the snowboarders. A snowboarder in the early 90's wouldn't be caught dead on a ski manufactuer's snowboard. What did the snowboarders do instead? They said fuck you and did it the right way. They started their own companies. Once the ski corperations realized their mistakes, and how much of the action they were really missing out on, they were forced to re-structure, and re-gear. Now companies like Rossignol Snowboard and Salomon Snowboard stand some what independent from the skiing side of the companys, and are run the right way athlete-centric. Snowboarders are now thinking twice about riding on a ski manufactures snowboard. Give it a few more years and there will be plenty of skier owned and opperated companies to choose from, its just a matter of time.

Whether you want to belive it or not, Jason Levinthal is the Jake Burton of skiing. Everyone just hates on him and his company because they started out making ski-boards. At this point everyone should be kissing his ass, or at least giving him respect, because he truly cares about the sport of skiing and its direction. Siver Cartel, is another perfect example. Oakley has a fantastic team and cares about their athletes. There are other companies out there that do care about skiing, I just don't want to start naming them for fear of leaving someone else out. Like I said before: Give it time, the winds of change are blowing.

Its a shame i live in england really beacause all the action with skiing goes down in america. so all us europeans are cut off from what is really happening in the ski industry. orage and siver dont exist in europe. they are in none of the main ski shops anywhere. so i dont even know who or what they are. And there is no real vehicle of communication to try and put these arguments across.
What i would say and dave please tell me if im wrong. when PBP realeased propaganda did it not thank salomon for sponsoring the film. (along with all the other companys that did) Could you have produced the film with just sponsorship with your favored companys. And if not surly they are helping the movment/industry because they make your films possible which i believe are the most powefull tools to shape and mould this growing industry.
Just my thoughts written down.

I wear a Planet Earth jacket and Blonde pants, therefore I support the snowboard industry! Why? Because I like the look of their gear more than all that Orage, Phenix, etc. gear that skiers are sporting. I have respect for these independent companies that are designing gear specifically for skiers. I ride Lines. I grew up listening to punk rock, so I've learned to support smaller companies in hopes that others will too to create a better economy for the consumer, however, and this jumps back to the people saying 'why buy an inferior product just to support a company that is skier-specific' I'm not going to pay for something I don't want! I work for my dad, he owns a trucking company. If I don't change my prices to reflect the current state of the market, we lose business. If I don't stay up to date on the industry so I can service my customers as efficiently as possible, we lose business. This argument works for the little guy and the corporate bastards okay? However, I don't ever, EVER, expect my customers to 'repeat buy' or support me if I'm not getting the job done! Why would I hire a truck for $200 when I can get one for $175? Just because the guy has less trucks on the road and needs the money? NO, it's a dog eat dog world. It will always be. Companies like Line realize that in order to grow with the big guys, they're going to have to offer more! And this cannot neccesarily be through cheaper skis, but greater customer service, innovations, and sponsored riders support! We all are thinking individuals and we all notice what companies are the ones who really care! I'd like to hope so.... The bigger a company gets, the further away more people in the company get from the sport they were once devoted too! I know the owner of Line can tell you what a fakie five is but I bet the owner of Rossi, or Salomon can't. Decide where you can spend the extra couple $$$$ to support the smaller companies. If we all did, then five years down the road we would have great companies that can offer a well-priced ski, that you can feel good riding (supporting). I also ride, and have for many years, so I feel no quams about purchasing snowboard clothing, these are companies that I support and totally dig their style. Think before you buy and you can definetly make a difference. Especially in an industry such as freeskiing, a sport completely in its infancy!

This thread made me think of something i normally wouldn't. It has a great point but it's kinda hard to support something you don't even know that excists. Here in Finland not many know what is Line or some other company that really is in supporting the industry. I probably would buy line stuff if there were some in the stores here. But my point is that not many know these companys here and give them the support and respect that they deserve. I agree with many of you: support the industry, buy skis, stickers whatever and it will pay back as better and more durable skis and better customer service etc.

ok, line only sold somewhere around 7500 to 8000 pairs of skis last year, total, entire ski and skiboard line-up. k2, on the other hand, sold over 11,000 pairs of 5500's. so don't be bitching when prices are a little higher or line might want to go with more of an all mountain ski (enter the darksides.) They might not be a full twin, they might look like they are 'selling out', but when it comes down to it, thats where the money is. and when they hit that market where the mass start buying a line ski instead of buying k2 or salomon, think of where the true twins are going to hit. with more money in R&D, testing and that good stuff, theres only one way for line twins (or any company that makes a twin that realizes where the market for new school is and responds),and thats up. so, next time you think about buying a pair of ski's that cost another 100 bucks more than a salomon, think about where you want the sport to go, and then get a quick job to make a 100 bucks and buy from the people that care. Plus, a ski from a company that cares carries a warranty from a company that cares.

I like this thread. I havent seen it till now, but ive said that exact thing quite a few times in other threads. 'Support the supporters.' It only makes sense, and im glad that someone people actually listen to said it. The reasons to support Line have already been said enough. In my opinion, their product are in fact the opposite of inferior, and pretty much have been since they came out. I know im not an insider of this industry, but i have seen it grow from day one- at least the twintip/newschool sector. I even remeber a time in the old days of the PBP forum when i suggested that skis have inserts. No one agreed but look what happened now.

As for Calgary skiers, I say support Fresh. Its the same sort of thing. Support a good shop and it supports skiing back. Just look at their shop team they are gonna have. Plus, im quite sure they are selling their skis cheaper than ski cellar- at least the Mike Nick Pro Model.

This also goes for the Glove thread. Awwww no good ski companies make good gloves waaaaaa. Well thats not true. And they dont get any better if their is no demand for them.

For people who are scared to buy Line and their new binding- dont be. Im sure they have been tested enough. Thats probably why they are being realesed so late. I for one would pay an extra two hundred dollars for a pair of Lines. Not only cause it supports them, but I would end up saving money in the long run, cause if I want another pair of skis, then I could use the same binding, and not have to buy another pair.

I dont know what everyones take on orage is, but I really like this company, and anyone from the Rockies that competes should too. They pretty much are the reason that you are competing. And its been said already, if you dont buy their outerwear, buy a hoodie, or a pair of shorts or something. By doing this your not only giving them a reason to make products, but also promoting them and helping to get their name out. Plus a lot of people think it says or means orgy. Theres nothing wrong with that.

Im definetly glad for people like DL, Harvey, Johny D, Jason L, Josh B, Eric I, whoever runs Orage, and im sure there is a lot more people to put on this list. However, they are, im sure glad that there is people like us who actually buy their products, cause Im sure that they would eventually like to make a living while giving to the ski community. I know I would. So listen to these fellas and think to yourself- Whats more important. Saving a hundred dollars in the short term, or getting a better product for the long term, which will more than likely lead to saving money also in the long term. So to all these guys higher up in the industry doing the right thing, I say thanks. And to all the kids that actually care about their sport. Thanks too.

that's why you get people supporting the companies that support like said before. for example, I'm getting a bunch of people to ride the LINE darksides and mavericks this year. For an older person that likes carvin down the hill what's wrong with the maverick? nothing. as a skier and a supporter it's your job to spread the market to a wider range of people. Just cause Line's look a certain way and are twin doens't mean they're only for teens. What about a person who is a little older and has a strong ski background, maybe even some race or soemthing, they don't need crazy speed but the darkside would give it to them and they'd love the tight turn radius. Hell don't forget teens for that matter. Everyone's usually a little reluctant to change. Racers obviously love to ski if they do something that gay for fun, haha jk, but really, I'm gonna get a few guys riding twins with me this season. they simply haven't tried cause they haven't bothered, I tell them they don't know what you're missing. I bet some will love it enough to start to convert, hell some of those rich bastards will buy them just to play with now and again, and what's wrong with that, more sales for the companies like LINE that support what we do. LINE didn't sell out making these semi-twins, they're expanding they're market and doing the opposite, the more money they make with these models will go into more research. How many companies can you say have bit the bullet and gone balls out for skiing like Line has, I mean it's almost life or death for them every season. They started with little things we all think as normal now cause everyone else does it. fatter, closer to the center of the ski, equal twin tips, even the graphics (remember how nuts that seemed at first). Now look at what's comin, the four hole inserts, and the pivogy binding. This is the kind of people you wanna be helpin to help you.

Of course I'm givin props to LINE here but there's lots of other companies that were mentioned before like Siver, Orage, Oakley, don't forget PBP and all the other film companies, also who knows what Armada will bring to the table. Lastly, I'm gonna mention a big corp, but I feel Rossi deserves it with the Scratch, that ski is something new to the market and I have never heard one bad thing about yet, even on forums.

So, in closing here, I'm also gonna say that that summer money a lot of people make should go to whatever brand you like the most. I mean most people aren't good or hard enough on their equipment to smash it up, so buying a pair of 00/01 or 01/02 Line's won't hurt ya at all. I mean how many people can say they won't buy the best ski from a company cause it's not technologically advanced enough for them? You'd be full of shit.

line darksides aren't the real twin-tips. Plus the thing about line is that they are more center mounted, then any other ski i have ridden. Plus, i hate to be stereotypical, but a lot of people juyst buy things for looks. Almost all twin tips cater to the tastes of yougn-uns. There are a few old people that do ride twin-tips, i didn't say there weren't i said they were few and far between.

This is the most important thread right now and most of you do not care. If you could only realize that we are riding on the cattails of snowboarding, then you would realize how important samll companies are. Peopel dont ski because it has a bad image. When I tell peopel I ski they walk away from me, so why do I ski? Because its fun. And putting every penny, all 1300 dollars i made this summer into some ski gear is worth it to me, but I want to know it will not be for nothing. So lets not forget this either: More money for companies means more money for advertising which means more content for freeze.

It's so fucking simple. Support, Armada, 4frnt, siver, line, sub-lux, poniverus, nomics. These companies were created for you. If your gonna whine like a bitch because your salomons won't break as fast what are you gonna do when they do break and you send them in and maybe get them back 3 months later and instead of new boards they glued your tip back together. If your Armada's break the company actually cares. My freind had a new pair of armada's before he sent his broken ones in. He didn't miss a day of skiing. This sport is so small right. There are like 400 pro snowboarders theres like less than 75 pro skiers. Thats why all our movies are like the same exact footage once the sport gets bigger themore film companies will exist and more film companies can focus on making more individual team movies so you won't have to watch the same movie three times from 3 different angles. Theres a lot of problems that could be easily fixed.

fucks sake, this sport was soo much better 3-4 seasons ago. all you little pansies spray about is 'support our sport'. bitch please. the 1080 is unchanged except for graphics since its debut. So for all the support that ski has gotten and the money made off it, it should hover, purify water and wipe your ass for you, but it doesnt because its a good ski and it does the job, along with every other twin out there. twins are all just built with the same techniques as regular skis, so 'supporting' x company isnt going to result in better equipment. Furthermore, if the newschool niche could survive on 5000 skis a year, then let it. The only thing that changed when the floodgates opened to the posers was prices shot through the roof and the park got packed with shitheads.

streetware, you are all brainwashed bitches that need clothing that looks like every other skate brand, but has a 'core' skiing logo on it. making t-shirts isn't going to do jack for the sport or for you. If you buy blue light sale items at K-mart, your still a skier, and the sport will still exist even if you dont buy all the 'add-on' merchandise like skier-specific hemrrhoid medication and skier-specific scalp wax.

pros. waste of time. they are only there to give dumb kids something to aspire to. they dont know what is possible to do on skis, so they need someone to show them. pros are like dangling a carrot in front of a donkey. they simply tempt little mush-heads to try and 'go pro'. In regards to Calgary, Fresh should fire the team and use the money they save to sell skis at a reasonable price.

To recap, fuck the pros, fuck streetware, fuck the whole industry cuz they're getting us just like they got the skaters getting into this buy buy buy mood to 'help our sport' but its all a crock. we never have and never will need posers to subsidize our sport. out.

I think it's funny that people keep metnioning Oakley as a 'rider-centered' company to support. Oakley is as corporate as they come! They're fricking huge and defintely NOT a 'ski centered' company!

And what the hell does 'rider-centered' mean anyway? Yes, companies like Salomon and Rossi are huge, but they are still SKI companies. The people that run these companies love skiing. It may not be the type of skiing that you love, but it's still SKIING. It's not fair to punish these and other big companies for being successful. Someday Line may be huge too...will you boycott them just because they have acheived success and grown?

No you are faggots. Pros are there to compete and are sponsored by companies. Well that was the original idea anyway. Now pros are their to advertise for their sponsors, and ams are like a risky investment that will pay off someday. Rider centered companies mean that making money is important, but comes after making a decent product. And they are not as worried about how much shit people do during the season. So support the companies that, if the they dont about the people who buy their stuff, at least care about the sport and ending the monopolies.

Line is the shit, i am sorry i have only had line skis for 5 years, so what if some people say they fall apart they ride the best, the company cares about its customers, they care about skiing and newschool. I used to have k2s and they broke every year on me, its not the skis so much as the rider, if you jump all day land backseat on some icy ass east coast table your tips will explode on any ski at some point. Line is improving each stop being such haters, anyone who hates line just stop talking shit, come down move on, ride and be positive, I support line for 3 reasons, ski design rides better than any other i have been on, graphics are awesome, and they are from ALbany upstate NY area where i am from, support smaller companies!!!

Ok, first off, I ski Line, they are sick skis. But honestly, if they were such a newschool dedicated company, what's the deal with coming out with carving skis, I understand that it is a bigger market and there is more money to be made, but if you say you are a rider oriented company, you don't branch out into other realms of the sport. Do you think 4frnt or Armada will ever come out with a carving/recreational ski? No. They are rider based, rider oriented companies. And as for Poor Boyz, Johnny is the man, he runs his whole operation out of his house in Hermosa beach, I will buy every one of his movies that comes out ever. Newschool skiing is all about the bro/bra attitude, I don't care who wants to be a prt of the sport, I am just stoked that I can be.

Our sport is growing.
I have been doing research over the last couple of weeks into the freeski market for a marketing project - that's why I found this thread again.

The industry is NOT surviving on 5000 skis sold a year.
The latest figures from SIA for the 2002/2003 season are 22,473 pairs of twin-tip skis sold in the US alone. That is up 7,411 from the previous season ==>> AN INCREASE OF 49% !!!! This goes against every other trend in the ski industry. Another area where freestyle goes against general trends is in skier visits. Most hills have been reporting declining visits for the last few years. Yet last year Mammoth saw an increase in visits of 12% - It was their best year since 1985/86. They have attributed nearly 40% of their skier/rider visits to terrain park use !!!
THIS IS BIG SHIT!
Skiing has a profile in the xgames, T Hall and Seth are recognised quite widely outside the sport, and companies are actually shifting their marketing strategies TOWARDS their athletes (despite what 221 thinks). Most ads this year feature a companies team, rather than a skiing shot.

So yeah, if you stand back and look at the forest rather than the trees, freeskiing is blowing up. Thats why it is important to stand behind these fledgling companies to help them weather their forst year or so in business. The larger companies would like nothing better than for them to just disappear into the night.

So, I'll reiterate what Dave orginally said..

SUPPORT THE COMPANIES THAT SUPPORT YOUR SPORT.

Oakley? I didn't know that the Oakley founders, owners and designers were skiers.? Are they throwing down some cool tricks and lines these days? Yeah, right.

Please consider listing Predatorwear as a core company next time. We're skier founded, owned, managed, and designed. And we work on our skiing and tricks every single chance we get. It's kind of funny, but when I'm at the water ramps or on the hill, I tend to notice that I'm the only company president/designer who is there training or throwing down. Yet there is no mention of our efforts here. I broke my femur on a backflip and dislocated my right hip on a crashed misty 7. But now I'm back and throwing backflips, rodeos and working on all of my skiing skills, while running this company. If that's not core, I don't know what is. Please recognize.

I think that our choices are very important, but I believe the pros and there choices have just as big of roll. What will happen when companies like Salomon start investing more money into the rapidly growing freeskiing market and offer twice as much salary as companies like Line can?

nice artice, but still some of the bigger companies want to progress skis other then theyre rentals, like for an example one of the highest executives from rossignol visist my work every year to see whats up (he lives in france i think) and our stores in sweden, and i think he visist almost every store in sweden that sales ross.
Thats pretty big in my opinion, or atleast its one step ahead for the skiing industry besides core companys etc.

I love how it's now nothing but support for this article. I totally agreed with it and argued a bunch of you about how many of you are indirectly to blame for Freeze collapsing etc. Everyone's argument was that something that 'looked cool' over rided something that 'was skiing supported.' Most reacent example was Anon. And everyone was like, oh but they sponsor two skiers. Ha, they dont give a shit. I think that now there is enough companies out there that really do support skiers and skiing that you have a fairly good choice of product. Sure it's your own money. Of course. But, why go out and buy some 686 pants or similar, instead of an Orage, Line, Siver Cartel, etc. Think were the money goes in the end. Because anyway you want to loook at it, this is the reason Freeze collapsed. How many of you own something from Burton, or other such company? Now if you put all that loot back into the ski industry it would be a shit load. And in regards to the twin revolution and sales, sure it is a very small part of ski sales nowadays, but even lame mainstream skis are starting to have a tiny bit of a turned up tail. They are trying to sell skis on the back of the excitment in the freeski world. All I wish is that people would support themselves, and they would soon learn that they would be rewarded by doing so by industry growth. And to what Harvey said. Yes, like he did in the past, there are MANY people who love skiing and support in blindly, money aside, so support them too. Its about putting in, what you want to get out. Good.

well here is the deal. i said previously to support smaller companies, and for the most part this is true. the problem is this: when it comes to my skis i CANNOT AFFORD to go with a product of questionable reliability. i got k2's, simply because i had not heard as many reports of the pe falling apart as i had about lines. so yeah, everything else though is smaller companies. and to be honest burton offered something different than the ski manufaturers, and the snowboarders then were retarded not to realize they were riding inferior products. it wasnt that they were supporting smaller brands, it that they were rebelling against the skiing norm.

Why should I care about supporting athletes? They do get the sport out there through comps and videos but even that isnt very profound. Everyone is arguing about supporting the athletes, that shouldnt be the biggest issue for the average newschooler. Support indy companies that put money back into r+d or comps or demos, etc, not because it allows ProX to ski for free all winter. Develop our sport, our product, not the athlete.

4FRNT SKIS!!!!!!!!!!!!! The best ski company by far with the largest amount of steeeeeze of any company with steeeeeze and is always putting towards betterment of the sport and producing the best, most durable, most pimped out! skis!!!!!

I am not sure about making skiing a HUGE sport. To tell you the truth I think there are already to many skiers. I buy line skis because they are good skis, the company is doing fine. People forget one thing...there is only so much room to ski. Only so many hills. I bet everyone that says we need to grow our sport has also compained about long lines at lifts and crowded terrain parks. As far as technology is concerned, it is not like the skis and bindings we currently have suck.
