Investing money in stocks

So I'm a lazy 17 year old and need some money. So i'm going to invest it in stocks. And before you say "get a job", no I'm in school and can't get a job. Besides you actually have to work at a job. Yes I know nothing about stocks, but my father said he would do the dirty business if I gave him the money.

So NSG, naturally I am going to put my faith and future wealth in your hands. You must make me money. I have $1000. What stock do I invest in and how many shares?

do you really think this is a good place for sound financial advice?
look at the suggestions youre receiving. Apple... Rim....?
currently apple trades at $399.74us per stock, as of my exact moment typing this.
which means you can buy 2.5 stocks, which means even if apple went up $100 which is un-fucking heard of, you would make $250. 

also, you realize that stocks are not a forsure thing right? its not like you invest $1000, sit around for a couple days, and sell for $2000. you are just as likely, if not more likely to loose your $1000 investment then you are to actually make money on it.

if you were actually serious in investing i think this would be the last place you would ask for advice from.
however if you were that desperate to make a new thread, atleast pick a topic we can all talk about.

i lied only 32 in aapl and the rest is in a bond but here is what i have to date

took a hit this quarter but i am thinking about selling soon anyway and putitng it in something more stable with maybe a 6% return, probably a bond that is what the other 7 k is in and although it doesnt make much it is stable.

to op, unless you are going to actively watch the stock market i wouldnt invest in it, you could loose a lot of money.

and someone else said about bp, that is looking like a really good buy right now.

I am not very savoy about financial trends, but i am very savoy with technology trends. Apple and google both are loosing power in the market. Google and Apple saw there high points this last year with the boom in tablet technology. As you stated they are "Inflated". The consumers in the technology realm have ADD and need something else to latch onto.

I think the next big trend that has longevity will be the next generation of video gaming consoles. So companies like sony, nintendo, and microsoft would be the best bets for investment.

Like i said i know little about stocks, but this is my prediction. Microsoft is the best managed of those three companies so that would be my first choice and Nintendo would be my last

honestly, you dont sound ready. I'm going to go ahead and assume you spend <3 hours a week on hw, if you want to make money in the stock market, you'll need to spend at least an hour a day researching before you invest. then once you do you have to check everyday. otherwise its just a gamble

1000$ wont get you far, but in this market ive seen my stocks go up 20% in a day, and down 3% everyday for a week, just reacting off of the eurozone shit.
IMX, INTC, RCL,BKE are good places to start looking, but im not investing in any of those so dont be an idiot and just buy them because they're up and its a monday

hey if either of us knew the answer we would be rich. and about how it will eventually match the true vaule is true but the stock will still go up down trying to match a company's value it wont ever be completly tied but i wont ever argue with buffet hes a genius. as for apples fate it all depend on the next big product launch whether or not it is "revolutionary" and that will put the people faith back into the new apple without Steve jobs.

oh ya i want his job as well even though right now he says its a bad idea in two to three years when the market is up his outlook will probably better. his job seems great he only works till like 1 due to when the market closes plays golf everyday and eats at fancy restaurants seems pretty awsome

haha no you're absolutely right - i got a little excited when i saw the gains today!!! It was a completely different stock i was thinking about at 4. I apologize! I never even checked my account.

I got in to BAC around 6.40 ish.... but im just messing about the numbers today - one day means hee haw.

I still stand by BAC though - I'm in BAC for the long haul.... i.e. 10 years, and yes it's a gamble... and banks at the moment are exposed to huge risk... but I think they'll be ok after this restructure. They are my wild card play though for sure... They are the only financial institute im in though... so will see what happens.

I would like to say that actually newschoolers probably has some good advice considering about 95% of us are rich or well off white kids with parents who have probably invested something.

If your looking to actually make any money off 1000, you'd have to do it through penny stocks. Some id recommend are LCAV which has been going us steadily, i just made 400 bucks off an original $500 investment. They've been going up pretty steadily. Another risky one is MOBI which i made 40 bucks off in one day, then lost 90bucks, then gained 130 bucks then lost 100 bucks so i ended up losing 33 bucks, but thats ok cuz i didn't invest much.

i am a finance major and nobody knows jackshit about anything. keep that in mind.

if anyone says he knows the "fair value" or tomorrows return of anything let alone that one of a few months, they are downright lying.

investing in one stock is like playing roulette with black and red.

and remember that more risk equals always more return. if someone says "risk-free, 15% return p.a.", yeah, be skeptical about such stuff.

i would say invest in a fund that had solid returns over the last years and didnt totally blackout during the crisis because who knows when the next crisis comes.


i know, TONS OF PEOPLE MADE money on the stock market with 1k, maybe some of them are dirty rich right now. but whats about the losers? they dont write books or have blogs, remember that. just use your common sense. if something is too good to be true, it probably is. also ask yourself when looking up some info on a "hot" stock: why would i random 17yr old fuckhead have that info and noone else? why isnt the price already adjusted?

USE YOUR GODDAMN COMMON SENSE AND BE HAPPY WHEN YOU GET 5% imo (idk about the american interest rates right now, but i would kill for 5% right now)

Gold - for me - i missed the boat on.

I like cheap stocks - and also high dividend yielding stocks to re-invest (snowball over long terms).

Gold has been on a huge hype train since the shit storm kicked off.... so much media hype, tv adverts - every fucker in the world is buy gold gold gold (it's trading 101 - when markets go south, people turn to real assets instead of paper assets)... however this has been played so hard over the last few years that i truly think gold is over valued right now (even though imo most people can't see the wood for the trees so to speak) - so i won't buy in to it now.... but yes in 08, would have been a good buy to sell now and make a good return. Gold is Like oil - which to me has a true market value (cost to produce and sell) of about 50-60 dollars a barrel right now - it's price is driven by speculators / futures traders due to it's political volatility in producing countries and global economic trending.

My other 2 recommendations are worth a look though - DOW and BP.

Bp are currently undervalued (however that will be wiped off pretty soon now they have resumed drilling). So too are DOW, but are a good bet for long term, not bad dividend yields (like a lot of the big chemical companies) and potential for a good capital gain. DOW actually made a huge gain today.

I'm essentially trying to position myself nicely for the next major bull market (which cycle with a reasonable pattern if you look through history), which i think will be around 2015..... just my thoughts though.

Sorry for making you post an epic headshot post above.... i was owned magically, but i fucked up... haha. Don't bet what you can't afford to lose - im lucky, and my BAC stuff is just a bet... even if it goes to 12/15 in 5-10 years, that's great by me - however if i have to sell it at 5, so be it - you have to be in it to win it, and they were too cheap to resist a punt. Quite a few friends of mine who are traders supported that decision and got in themselves too....

I invested in silver like 3 or 4 years ago. Bought 1700 bucks worth, double my money. Would have tripled it if I had stayed in for another year but I needed the loot and I had made money off of it so it was helpful.

I would encourage anybody buying precious metals to buy the physical metal bullion.


It's a great safeguard against economic collapse, and you look like a fucking pirate.

there are several mints you can buy from. I suggest reading about them and making sure everything is legit. You can also buy bars off of ebay or buy coins at shops and shows. It sort of all depends on what you want to own.


If you're just looking for something simple straight up bullion is probably the way to go. Bars that have the metal you want without anything having to do with rarity like coins.


I bought .999% pan american silver bars from nwt mint. I had 5 10 ounce bars and 1 100z bar. Took a while to get shipped but it was worth it. They looked fucking dope. Wish I had been able to hang onto them but I made a profit at least and it was nice to people able to use money from years before when I need loot. Hopefully I'll be able to gather some saving and invest a little heavier and keep them real long term.

Seriously though a week or two ago I would have told you to look at CEDC, as I hold them myself and they  have (had) a fairly high price target, but now I'm finding out that they're getting sued, so be cautious. I've made (and lost) a lot of money in the market, but with only $1000 your best best is probably to go with a stable stock that pays a good dividend. Duke Energy (DUK) has one of the best price to dividend ratios I believe.

I know yahoo finance has a list/chart where it list each stock in order from either highest to lowest or lowest to highest beta, but I can't remember how i found that chart

ive been giving my dad money here and there ever since i was 14. i gave him a total of 3 grand up to this point and hes made me nearly one thousand not too bad doing no work whatsoever. all matters on who you give your money too. but i'll be opening up my own account once im 18 in a few months. that market game everyones doing is good practice though thats for sure

fuck dude your 17 i hate when people say they cant work because of school, i worked 7 am saturday and sunday and after/ before sports practice when i was in highschool....also i work in the finance world now out of college, stocks blow 1000 bucks at 20% cool you made 200 bucks on a huge gamble you coukd make that at a part time job in two weeks. honestly the least risky thing you cpuld do is buy a qp flip that shit real quick, and double your money in a week

theres a lot of money to be made when the facebook ipo drops, ride it out for a day maybe less, short the shit out of it....profit? social media is a joke of a long term investment, not trying to claim but i said short yelp about about 6 days ago in another forum- its down 25% since then.
