College grad. volunteer work (peace corps)

I graduate college in may and have no idea what im doing next.  Im not ready to work 40+ hours a week for the next 40 years of my life.  I'm gona go crazy when I have to move back home, a buddy of mine just got back from central america doing volunteer work and it seems like a road I might not mind traveling down a little.

There have been some threads created about this but not much in the past year or any with much info.  I figure NS wont be the best place to look but it cant hurt...Has anyone done this or thought about it before, I like the peace corps, but a 27 months comitment is a lot of me right now, not to mention i cant not be making money for the next 2 years.  I think something along the lines of  6<months is what im looking for.  I'm open to most locations, central and south america spark my interest right now but im open to other areas.  Any one have any experiance in the field.

not sure what the status of the funding is right now, as it was proposed for inclusion in budget cuts, but you should give americorps serious thought. there are positions in virtually every field in every region of the country and terms are typically 10 months or one year. you also get a small stipend and a scholarship once you complete your term. i really enjoyed my term, and it gave me a great excuse to move to a part of the country i wouldn't have otherwise

How did you enjoy it, Ive been looking into them for a bit now simply for the fact they are not looking for 5-10grand like most other volunteer orginizations for a few month stint.

just find a habitat for humanity operation in some country and go build a house for a family.

to be honest, the best part about it was moving to washington. but in terms of the actual job, i was working in a field that i was passionate about, getting good work experience, and contributing to a good cause. my placement was doing residential energy efficiency projects for low income families, but you can find openings in virtually every field imaginable. that's the other benefit over groups like the peace corps, is that you're applying for specific jobs in specific locations, not getting assigned somewhere at random.
