first you need to get the fattest skis possible, ARGs are the best because they are the closest to water skis,
Then when you are up top try to run some windex or Wd40 on your bases, this will make you faster!
DON'T TURN or scrub speed, you want to go into the water as fast as possible, if possible go all the way through the water and hit a jump coming out, (this will give you more points to win)
When entering the water there will probably be a jump to launch you into the water, suck it up with your knees, too many people have stiff legs and get bucked into the back seat and land on their back in the water, suck it up, bring your knees up and put your hands forward.
When crossing the water you really do want to feel like you are water skiing, keep your hands in front of you and crouch like you are sitting in a chair.
