Scissoring off of rails/boxes

How important is scissoring to spinning off of rails and boxes?

Also, i always hear people talk about it but i don't understand how it works, can someone give me an explanation? Thanks.

really important for frontsides spins out and long rails. i dont really know how to explain it cause i don't watch my feet, but usually you want to slide with the uphill edge of the downhill ski

Its probably an essential for improving your rail game. It makes swaps easier along with spinning off of rails and boxes. It also sometimes helps you grip the box better allowing you to stay on it longer.

I slide right foot forward...

Drop/Angle your front ski, you literally grab hold of the surface edge of the rail or box by doing this, allowing to you spin the FUCK out of whatever you are sliding.

It's easier to see in person and pick up on.

ha, your kidding right, with out scissoring your arms and body would be every where, when you scissor the force from hooking your edges like that. instead of spinnign your self around with your arms.

I learned 270 outs without scissoring and had to huck them with my arms and flail my poles like a retard. Once I started scissoring they were so much smoother and steezy.

front 2's out are sooooo much easier when you scissor, but i find that for blind 2's you just need to pop and spin because you already kind of have the momentum going

I agree that starting and stopping rotations is more technical... but you can do FS and BS switchups, Pretzels and any other rail trick without scissoring or moving you upper body all sketchy

I find that whenever i do that motion with my bottom ski, i end up skidding out and landing on my ass. any tips?

I didn't read much of the comments so this might have been said already, but edging is very important.

When you're sliding a rail or a box, you will usually edge with your downhill ski. Drop you toe to spin blindside/uphill, drop your heel to spin frontside/downhill.

You can also edge to help keep you on the element.

You may here people call "scissoring" a trick, its not. Its the way you use your edges in difrent was to do front and blind switchups/ spins out on features. For example if you can do all 8 ( all 8 swich up 270 out variations) you have masterd the basic edge controll and by having all 8 that opens infinite doors off posibilites of tricks you can do. IMO all skiers should learn how to do all 8 to get their basic edge controll down. For a frnt side switch up sliding left foot forward you use your inside edge of you left heel ( your tail dips down tward the snow) to grasp the rail and spin off. for a blind switch up you use the inside edge on your toe ( this is your left foot and your tip dips down) scisoring is everything with your rail game anyone on this site that tells you otherwise is dumb and probly cant ski for shit. if anything is not clear feel free to ask me questions. RAIL SKIING = WAY OF LIFE.
