Big Mountain vs. Park/Urban vs. Powder

Yo i was wondering the otherday what was the most popular in the freeski community. Whether it was charging huge AK spines, throwing dub 12's and superfeds or dropping pillow lines and slaying blower pow. What do you guys prefer? Personally I'm a pow hound.

My mountain gets some powder, but I don't have pow skis so I can't enjoy it to the fullest. I love to ski pow though, I'd ski pow over anything else any day. But I ski in park everyday, even if it snows like 20cm. Pow skiing just isn't fun on center mounted park skis.

I really think if you sit down and think about it you already know most peoples answers. Most east coast kids only have the chance to ride park along with the midwest so obviously their andre is going to be predictable. I think anyone who knows how to actually ski powder in a place where its accessable will tell you powder. If they don't its probably because they got frustrated and gave up.

I would hope that most on here would ski the mountain, even when there is no pow.  You can make park laps, but if you only ski the mountain when there is pow you won't develop very much.

i dont think rails have anything to do with skiing either
this season i have grown to hate park skiing through a combination of fear, lack of caring how cool i look in the park, and the all around boringness of skiing a shitty little park all day long

also if i didnt have lizzys i dont think i would ever do rails or park ski

Most people. I love the park. So much creativity involved. Then again if Park city had some pillows or cliff drops I would probably not be in the park as much. But for me good powder trumps all. Good pow though. If there is shit underneath that I hit every time I want to take a slash, Meh.

If I have the chance powder over park anyday, but it's cold and we get like no snow here so mostly park for me. I rather watch urban out of all the aspects of skiing.

i dont consider 17 year olds that lap the park, park rats. I consider 12 year olds who throw down cork 7s and lap a jump line a park rat. From my experience most if not all of the latter end up being naturally capable of pow. This phenomenon usually does not apply vice versa.

so basically what you are saying is, if your not doing a type of skiing at the most extreme end of the spectrum that exists for that type, you basically are not skiing at all and are just kind of pretending to ski but you might as well not be because its not the absolute extreme?

one can easily form an opinion about park skiing and real skiing even if they arent skiing alaska or doing dub 12's

Also rails ≠ skiing
there is no "traditional skiing" specific skill used on rails whatsoever and it is much easier to compare it to rollerblading imo

When there is pow I ski it, but I still take a lap or two through the park on those days. When there isn't pow I like to ride park about half the time.

this. i'm 19 soon, and I didn't have the chance to be a park rat. I started skiing 9 years ago and as far as i knew, snowboarding was in the x games, and there wasn't any skiing like that to be seen. so i didn't grow up with tom wallsich or anyone else to watch slay park stuff and imitate. even if I saw the earlier park riders, I'd still be nowhere near as good as the pros, or even the up and coming 15 year olds.

I came from the same situation. Mountains with terrain parks were something I only saw in the magazines and movies. Until my junior year in high school I had never seen a park in person. Last year was the first time I had ever seen a pipe in person.

Quit with all the hate guys. All types of skiing are fun and challenging in different ways. Big mountain takes balls to charge lines that are not created specifically for sports. Park skiing gets pretty gnarly because when you fall you are not falling in soft pow. And rails are just technical, if someone says you shouldn't do rails because they have nothing to do with skiing then they are being ignorant, open your mind to new ideas.

Doing all types of skiing is way better than only one type when you have the chance.

i like backcountry/big mountain skiing

i do a lot of touring and i've done it since a young age so that's what i classify myself as. when i ski in the east i just like carving groomers and exploring bumps and trees, imo it's more fun than skiing park

Pow and cliffs. I fucking love dropping big cliffs and skiing super deep pow. And my (very) limited experiences with pow booters have proven super fun. But of course, I'm from the east coast, so I don't get to do that much at all. I tried park for the last two seasons but it honestly just feels so so so wrong to me, like everything in my body is telling me not to spin and not to commit, it's the only place on the mountain where that happens. I commit more to dropping a 35 foot cliff than to throwing a 3 over a 10-foot table. So I don't do much park...honestly, skiing should be about whatever makes you happy. That's why we do it. You like rails and nothing else? Fine, hit rails. Don't knock the other shit, and at least give it a try, but if you've tried it all and you know what you like, then more power to you.

And to the guy above me calling that other kid a faggot, in all caps, because he likes rails more than pow, don't be an asshole. Let him do his thing, it's not affecting you.

Similar to why Northstar kicks ass: very few good skiers ski it, and the best terrain is a short hike away. So noooobody touches it. You can find untracked powder 5 days after a storm.

East coast kids who are doing those sorts of tricks are not out skiing the locals at big western mountains.  If you go to a place like Squaw, you will see numerous locals, who are not sponsored and never will be, who will absolutely school those park kids on the mountain.

As for who on this site actually skis big mountain.....It depends on what you mean by that.  I would say people that are skiing the best lines at Squaw or Jackson are definitely skiing big mountain.  Those folks tend to go to TGR, however.

i think this is way to general. Some people just get board of lapping the same run in the park so theyll go in the trees or wherever and maybe find some untouched. maybe people who stay in the park are there because they dont want to progress in skiing phat lines? u cant just say that. And if you suck at pow its just not fun. Simple as that so most people who claim to like pow the best, i believe it.

I fucking hate when I tell my friends I want to go ski some park and they say "C'mon dude I want to go skiing"

Obviously it isn't the same as skiing in the "traditional" sense but it has become just as much a part of skiing as big mountain, pow, and whatever else.
