I'd say about 80% of my everyday life is spent learning about cool things related to wildlife and plants and every time I see/hear about something really cool all I want to do is tell somebody, so I'm going to share with you a rad animal or plant of the day (or as close to daily as possibly given my schedule)!

If no one cares, I'll probably just stop doing it but it's worth a shot!

Last night I was watching a documentary about water birds and I have to say that the shoe billed stork is by far the most dinosaur-like bird I've seen as of yet. It's beak looks like it could destroy you.

The shoe-billed stork, or Balaeniceps rex "B-rex", is native to the tropics of Eastern Africa and feeds on large fish, rodents, young crocodiles, waterfowl, snakes, etc. It's populations are currently in decline due to habitat destruction and the still legal bird trade in many African countries.

WOW I totally forgot about this thread until I just read an article on BBC.com about the Saola. The "Asian unicorn" is one of the world's rarest animals. There are no saola in captivity and there are no reports of seeing any in the wild- the only proof exists from photos taken by camera traps and locals. The antelope-like creature is having a nature reserve set up in Vietnam by the WWF solely for its protection.

Here's another random one just since it's been half a year...

The Laughing Kookaburra is the largest member of the kingfisher family although it rarely eats fish. Kookaburras eat more reptiles and amphibians and have been known to steal people food from picnics and grills. Their shrieking laugh announces their territory, their presence, raises alarm, and initiates courtship.

Japanese Spider Crab! It's the world's largest living arthropod and can grow up to 13 feet across. They're found on the deep sea floor of the Pacific Ocean and can live up to 100 effing years long (wow)!

I'd be freaked out if I saw this while diving...

The caracal is a small grassland cat found in Africa and Asia. It has not been domesticated but has been tamed and used in hunting contests. Their ability to jump 10 ft off the ground has been exploited by humans for bird-catching and it is not uncommon for them to catch 10 birds in one try.

The kinkajou is soooooo cute! It's a weird cross between a primate a weasel a coati and a raccoon, but they reside in Central/South American tropical forests are nocturnal and social animals that live in cooperative groups. All in all they're just weird looking cute mammals : )

The Chinese Giant Salamander is the largest Salamander species in the world measuring 6 ft long! They're found in the streams of China and can live for up to 50 years. Unfortunately today the salamander is near extinction due to extensive habitat loss and the use of pesticides.

The happy face spider is found in Hawaii and although many do show markings in this happy face arrangement, there is great variation from island to island and some have no happy faces at all (sad face)! Some scientists thought the markings were to ward off bird predators, but since the markings change depending on what they eat and since the spiders are tiny and inconspicuous, it is now believed the markings serve absolutely no purpose at all other than to promote smiles.

The Tibetan fox is one of my favorite canids. It lives in the high altitudes of Nepal and China at 9,000 -13,000 ft. Tibetan foxes have mastered the hunting of pikas which unfortunately are on a fast track to becoming extinct, posing a huge threat to the Tibetan fox. They're most known for their unusually square shaped head. Watch the video... it's cool!

I just learned about this yesterday in one of my wildlife classes! So cool! The coconut crab is actually a type of hermit crab and is the largest arthropod in the world! It's monstrous claws allow it to husk coconuts and eat the inner flesh. Their claws are SO monstrous, in fact, they are able to lift rocks up to 60 lbs (holy shit)! These huge crabs can only be found in the Indo-Pacific region and are severely threatened due to extensive hunting for food.
