How many of you have found "the" epic pow day....just to drown in snow?

Let me elaborate here........

So I am in Utah this year again right, and I am at Brighton.....nice dumpin day. 16+ inches or so reported. Whatever......

insane rockered pow skis? check
backpack full of everything essential? check
ability to breathe? negatory
snorkel? negatory




I want to ski waist deep pow and I get to yea yea, but I've never had snow drown my face before, and you can't just cover your mouth per say because things can fog up too easily. So Im going down and Im like fuckin drowning in powder. Like God please give me air instead of snow in my mouth.......


What do you guys do in these situations? When you are blasting down runs getting drowned in snow.........

Unfortunately I have never been in a drown by powder situation yet. Powder but not chest deep pow. But that line made me lol.

2 days ago, Im going at Sutton,QC for the fist time and I skied the most epic powpow day of my life at the moment!

Seriously, Im going at a backcountry spot in the mountain, a double diamond with some of my friends who are very good and  i don't have some powder skis..

This day was so sick, get to much pow, ive fail and during 40 min I can't pull me out of the pow beacause ive get it at my shoulder!!

After 40 min a guy see me and help me to get out of the pow and after I lost a ski in the pow during 15 min..

BUT THIS WAS ONE OF THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE!!

HAHA!!! What the fuck!  Are you kidding me!  You should be glad you had the opportunity to drown in it!  Had a blower day yesterday at Moonlight Basin!  BoooM!  Nothing beats chest-deep!  Cutting worm tunnels!  HA!!

Close your mouth and ski, simple. Wait til you ski 30-40 inches of snow, then you have to use your hand as a shield below your face so you can ski down. 16 inches is hardly snorkel worthy.

Breath quickly at the apex of your turn like when you finish and start to initiate your next turn, at this time you are usually shifting your body weight and will be a bit in the air before you sink back into the snow again. It works pretty well once you get the timing figured out, but hey, your not only getting face shots your get drowned, enjoy it, this is why we ski.

hahaha yes, I experienced the same "problem" in Jackson Hole. I would literally inhale and choke on powder. And it did not suck.

so im shredding on the east coast, we get s fresh 6 inches, im stoked hit up some woods and can breath fine because there is only 6 inches of fresh snow and its heavy and wet

I had this problem at alta today, but it was only present for maybe 10-15 turns through the day, fucking stupid broken alarm clock...

but yeah, just don't be such a fucking pussy and slay that shit, real skiers don't need air

dang dude sorry about the 16+ inches of pow must've really been hard not being able to breathe and all. you should've been at my shitty pennsylvania mountain with 10 runs where i practically skied on an ice rink. you know its icy when the corduroy is still there at 6pm, fucking east coast fuck this place.

pop out of the pow when you finish a turn, and take a quick breath before you fall back into the next turn...not that hard.

or wear a bandana/balaclava.


the faster you go, the more you will float, so go faster if your worried about being too deep.

exhale through the turn, then when you float up on unweighting, grab a deep breath then start ripping your next turn. Nothing's better.

Breathe when there's not a lot of snow around your mouth, close your mouth when there is. Also, Yowies, Bandanas, and ski masks are useful when there's 40-50 inches of fresh. 16 is nothing, really, once you've skied on a 4 foot dump.
