WIKILEAKS HAS BEEN NOMINATED FOR THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE!? What the fuck? Should I get someone to nominate me for a novel peace prize even though I've done nothing?

Yeah that crackpot is speaking at PSU today, they have an entire corner of campus basically shut down and the busses arent running. They also closed the bridge that I take to get to my class, the only way to get there. I don't give a shit what you have to say when to just come to chat at my school, just stay in Dc and run the country thanks.

On a side note, I think wikileaks is deserving of the Nobel Prize, absolutely. If an organization causes the masses to question the shady, hidden activities of their government, how is that a negative thing?

I don't see how an organization can receive the prize when it could have put lives in danger. Sure, transparency in the government is fine, but not at the cost of the safety of men and women serving your country.


Then again I sincerely doubt he gives a shit, he's Australian after all.

Well, Obama did not stop a war or solve a worldwide problem. Al Gore did not solve global warming, just brought it to the commoner's attention with a shitload of muddled facts.

Neither deserved a prize.

The CIA has explicitly reported that no lives have been endangered due to any leaks. And again this men and women serving your country shit... It's their choice! No one forced it upon them to join the army. What the fuck do you owe them? Especially when it comes to serving in wars based on falsified intelligence and still going along with it after the beans have been spilled.

It's such a sick attitude. "Hate the war, but respect the soldiers!" ..why? If you had compulsory military service rounds, if you had a draft for Iraq and Afghanistan, then I would say that and stand behind it completely. Not when it's ultimately, 100%, a person's individual choice to join the forces and get shipped to a warzone accordingly.

yup, Alfred Nobel - guy who invented dynamite. And to the other guy who said "Maybe I'll leak some documents that had no effect and get a prize whine blaah fat noises", you do know that WikiLeaks has existed for a long time now, as a whistleblower channel, to become an organization that protects the freedom of speech and the free flow of information.

This most recent leak, the US embassy cables, that people undermine CONSTANTLY brought to light what many have suspected before but have had no actual evidence to back it up, hence making the impact slighlty less dramatic than it should have been.

I think that they're getting the Peace Prize nomination more because they're showing an example of what is required to have peace: not having the veil of secrecy surrounding all governments. True, what they do may have caused death, which does seem to counteract the idea of the Peace Prize; however, as a whole, what they're doing is better for the greater good in showing that it's possible to create peace by opening up communication channels rather than having everything classified and under lock and key.

-Can you link me a source on the CIA stating no one was put in danger? I'm not challenging you, in fact i want to believe it, but i'd like to see a source for that.

-Here's my take on that situation.. you can hate the war but respect the troops because in my mind, only the most radical person would try to argue against having a powerful, efficient military, and for that to work you must have obedient soldiers who take their orders and execute them. "Ours not to reason why" as the poem goes.. it's not the soldiers' job to decide what is right to do on a large scale, it's their job to follow orders to the best of their ability. So while I'm against the war, i support the troops because they shouldn't be blamed for where they go to war. At some point, say, an order to shoot civilians or some stupid shit, yeah, sure, they can be expected to stand up against orders for what they think is right. but the blame for WHERE to go to war lays almost solely on our leaders. the media didn't help either, but that's a different can of worms.

also, i think it's arguable that EVERYone has a choice to go to war. once again, whole 'nother can of worms, but even being a very anti-war guy, i have a hard time faulting someone who sees service in the military as a good way to both help their life/family/finances/career and the country they live in. i will admit i don't have quite as much respect for people like my uncle who tried his hardest to go to vietnam "to kill some gooks." that mindset is one i can't really wrap my head around, but hey, i guess it takes all kinds.. even total idiots

They are putting a giant wedge in international relations around the world, discouraging powerful figures from communicating with each other.

Wikileaks is doing almost nothing productive for the world. It is just a guy trying to be famous, putting diplomacy around the world down as collateral.

that's not really true. i agree that some more discretion could be used in what's posted in some cases, but to say it's done nothing productive is a very subjective claim.

you can argue that julian has a big head and some of his actions are dictated by this, but that's not true about the whole organization and it shows in the friction between WL and julian in the past year

What wikileaks has done is force our own values as a nation(namely freedom of information) on our government. Personally I find it laughable that people are taking offense to it. I think it really mirrors the Mubarak situation in that our government has repeatedly shown that they are willing to abide by our countries founding principles, when it's convenient. In Egypt we have a choice between defending the peoples right to overthrow an unjust government, or keeping a corrupt middle-eastern ally in power. I think it is our duty as a nation who has done the same, to support the Egyptian people. With the wikileaks situation, our government had chosen to keep inconvenient truths from us, which again directly clashes with our founding principles..... They deserve it.

I never stated that Wikileaks got anyone killed, but I did state they endangered lives. Which is entirely possible, the U.S. military is composed of hard fucking men, if some shithead terrorist got it into his head he would try and attack them..they'd probably call in a JDAM on his ass.
