Salomon bindings suck

im watching the x games men pipe qualifiers and 4 competitors lost there skis for no reason what so ever, and there only half way through the field. Oh and did I say that all the bindings were Salomon.

the salomon 916 is a beast. The sth16 isnt bad either.

the rest of the bindings, you are right, they are not so great.

sth16's are dope the old salomon bindings from like 2 yrs ago (forget what they are called) the toe piece always progressively kept getting looser no matter how much i tightened

I suppose I can't really confim this, but I was told by a Solly rep that along with the return of the STH 16 Steel (aka s916) there's a new STH 16 mold with a similar look of the Steel. Here's a pic of the steel:

Most likely no. Pre-releasing/ejecting on clean landings usually has to do with the forward pressure or the toe piece design, not usually the DIN setting (also, their all riding 16 DIN bindings with a low of 9, so they're riding at at least 10, most likely somewhere in the 11-13 range though - so it's probably not too low). So either the Solly tech messed up all their team riders forward pressure (unlikely...especially since a few of them weren't Solly team riders) or the toe piece doesn't hold the toe of the boot properly (usually this is because of wear on the boot...again unlikely since those are probably all brand new boots their wearing), so that only leaves a design flaw, which is a bummer.

Now, this isn't a reason to not buy Solly bindings though...unless you're riding competitive pipe at that level it most likely wont release like that.

Also, after season Xavier's ski release for no apparent reason, there MAY be an issue with the pipe...weird grooves, over-vert walls, something weird could be up...but again, unlikely since those go through some very close examinations.

thats what i was gonna say. i remember hitting a quarter pipe that appeared normal but instead of being a nice smooth transistion, it was practially like hitting a brick wall. i'd imagine landing in one with a tranny like that would make your skis pop.

Yeah, I think the skiers right wall might have had some issues (everyone was loosing their ski on that wall...but, that's usually the natural side wall too...so it could just be that people were throwing harder their than on the left side...hard to tell). But, it doesn't make sense that it only happened to a handful of people...

I bet X-games pipe is the location for some of the biggest impacts and stresses that any ski bindings see in a season. Would not be surprised to find that athletes are pushing the limits of what bindings can do. We're talking impact and compression here, not twisting and wrenching (so much I guess), so maybe even high din setting wont matter too much. Just an idea, I'm probably wrong.

This.

I heard that the only reason the STH 16 and STH 14 Driver exist's is because of popular demand.
If it was up to Salomon the STH 16 would be a stronger STH 12 toepiece.
This may be what they are testing.

you guys are all pretty uninformed, salomon has the best toe peice on the market... the driver toe is the only one with fully adjustable wings...

Look, rossi and dynastar are really trash... yeah they hold you in, but they weigh a ton, FKS excluded, and haveing tested hundreds and hundreds of bindings, they have the most sparatic release values vs bindings by salomon or tyrolia

I learned that a long time ago when I first bought a pair of Salomons. They act like they don't have any elasticity at all. This means no matter what your din or forward pressure, they seemed to pop out for no reason all the time. Turn tables simply have a shit ton of elasticity, so when you smack a crazy hard icy pipe, then can cushion the landing and not release. Salomon bindings just can't do this as well. That is why I bought a pair once, then never will again.

Notice today all the Salomon riders had the old white STHs back...

But when I say test, I mean this was the most pressure you could possibly put on them, everyone on them is trying to go their biggest and hardest with as much energy as possible, something that just doesn't come out all the time in a non-competitive atmosphere. So, I guessing the Solly riders have had these on their skis for a little while now, during practice and whatever, but they just weren't punishing them as much as they were during the comp, so they held up before, but then once the pressure was upped, they couldn't hold on.

I'm still leaning more towards pipe conditions though, that it's just too odd that all of those binding problems happened on the same wall, in relatively the same area (except for Xavier) without there being some issue with the pipe.

I love my sth's. I find the heel piece to be one of the best I have ever used ( have yet to try fks). I never have any issues with them, and I am using the OG sth 12 (real crappy z toe according to alot of people).

Just happened to me last week skiing, landed back seat and somehow my heel piece blew the fugg up. They were about 4 seasons old, with a no more than 100 days skiing on them. I've always bought salomon bindings, but after this I've jumped on the band wagon and bought marker jesters.

I'm sure salomons higher lined bindings, like the sth 16 are solid, but i guess i want to see why everyone likes marker jester/griffons so much.

salomon has a 5 year binding warranty. go to your local shop and get them sent back.

as for all the binding releasing going on during pipe runs, did anyone notice if they were toe or heel releases? landing with a ski flexed, like you do on a pipe wall, changes the forward pressure of the heel. this affects the release of a track-based binding (like everything salomon makes) a lot more than it does the pivot/fks heel which has a little bit of 'float' to it to absorb that change. not saying this is for sure what's going on, but it could be a possibility. did anyone ride tyrolia bindings and have issues?

The EXACT same thing happened to a pair I had a few years ago. It broke after less than 2 years. I think I tried to contact Salomon about them, but I don't remember even hearing back. I didn't really care, I just moved on a never bought a Salomon product ever again...

In my opinion Salomon bindings are the best out there by a mile. Only talking sTH 16 / 916 or equivalent. 912s / 914s are junk due to how easy it is to smash the heelpiece. Non-driver toes are junk as they do prerelease.

Never had trouble prereleasing with 916s. Have prereleased from Tyrolia, Atomic, Marker (obviously) and Rossi (admittedly Axial not FKS).

I think that a lot of people prerelease from Salomon driver toes because they don't adjust the toepiece correctly, but this is what makes the binding superior, as it will work for new and old boots, when adjusted correctly.

Also, whilst lots of people say about FKS never prereleasing, I've also seen quite a few people with injured knees due to FKS not releasing when it's supposed to.

I've skied a few no-fall lines with Salomons and never once worried about prereleasing, I've also had a lot of heavy crashes and never once worried about knee injury.

Just my 2 cents.
