So NS i have my music appreciation final project due tomorrow and i have to do a report about something influential to music and I have no idea who are what to do. It can be anything a band, singer, songwriter, place, instrument basicly anything. Also, like 15 kida have already done the beatles or bob marley so non of them. Thanks
How about blues influence on rock? Or perhaps Pink Floyd opening the doors for more progressive music? It would very easy to write a multi page report on either of those topics. Listen to the heavy blues influence in this solo for an example if you are unsure of what I mean.
There's a performance of it happening RIGHT now, and its set to finish in another 600 years I think? John Cage was a badass, if you can wrap your head around him even a little bit you'll have a great project.
Do it about how the back street boys and nsync totally changed music with auto tone and the lip syncing

You guys are fucking terrible."- awsomoz$
We were all expecting something GRAND for our massive efforts down the line. Needless to say, all the money went to drive us 100km from home and play frisbee golf for a week at a "resort" aimed for trips for retarded people"
honestly, you should do the influence of the increasingly prevalent computer technology, and more specifically vocoder technology, or auto-tune. Maybe take it on from a more negative point of view, or look at it's pros and cons, proper uses etc. Do a little research on Antares.

side note is that I had a chance to chat with Matt Pike last year and holy shit is that guy a true rocker. He works labour jobs at construction sites just to pay bills and help him tour with High On Fire and keep that band afloat.
I would suggest doing the paper on the album Drink The Sea by The Glitch Mob. And go one about how music can take you places in your mind that not a lot of other things can. And how it can put you in a deep, calm, meditative trance that can change a lot of perceptions of life
when did Trent Reznor ever have anything to do with Tool?
and Frank Zappa is the best suggestion so far. Not only is he incredibly influential in music itself, but he was also very outspoken and an advocate for freedom of speech/ against censorship in music and other medias. And he played the byceicle
or if you want probably the hands down most influential musician or at least the last hundred years, use Robert Johnson.
Write about a famous classical composer, like Beethoven. There is plenty about him on the internet that you can reword and it will be easy to write a bunch on how his life influenced the music he composed. It will also impress your teacher... she doesn't have to know you hate classical.
I would recommend reading The Electric Kool Aid Acid Test to anyone who is interested in this time period. It is especially interesting if you are going through any sorts of similar experiences. It relates perfectly. They were doing the same shit in the 60s that is going on now, and it is really interesting to see where it all came from.
I would personally write a paper on this stuff if I had to right now.
I feel like unusual signatures aren't very "influential" in music. very few musicians, both modern and older, stray out of the standard 4/4, cut time, 6/8, 3/4 areas. I can think of maybe two bach compositions, a few by debussy, and then noteable modern examples stop after primus, dream theater, and the genre of math rock or tech metal.
I'd write the paper on how Ludwig Van and his nearest contemporaries created and then revolutionized the romantic period, adding structure and nuance to the more robotic, super technical sounding compositions of the classical period.
