Trying New Tricks

Ok im just going to come out and say it. You may call me a poser or a wana be. The truth is im 14 years old and Ive never done a 360. I expect to see a whole bunch on negative comments but i dont care, ill pick out the good ones. what im asking for is how i can summon the balls to try a trick. Ive done a 180 but whenever im dropping in ready to try it i always puss. Anyone have any advice? Not on just 360's but new tricks in genreal.

always try to imagine yourself stomping the trick. that helps me at least. and i usually enter the state of mind which is there could be a lot worse things happening to you then just falling on a trick. that usually takes out a lot of the fear and the imagining gives confidence. with no fear and confidence your good to go. idk if all that makes any sense its kinda hard to explain

do your first attempt of the trick only in the lowest consequences situation possibly. make sure that you acknowledge that fact, and you should be good. if you fall, you fall, and you have learned that falling is not that bad. if you stomp it, congrats, keep at it.

I too imagine myself stomping it. I also just tell myself to sack up and huck it. If you fall it will not hurt that bad and get back up and try it again. if you don't get it you at least tried.

for a 360 you just have to throw your arm(after a couple 360 you will be able to do it without) the side your the most confotable and spin(straight,don't be crouch or whatever because you will cut you spin and land on the side like a 270).like veryone said, just think about you doing the trick in your mind before throwing it and keep thinking you will land it beause if you don't think you will land it then you will always fall and never get it.

get a jump that has a good pop that will get you enough air time find like a jump thats on a trail or a side booter is what i did for my first 3. For me a big thing was performing in front of people. I didn't care if i wrecked i just didn't want to wreck in front of people. When you go and do it make sure it has a good clear landing something that if you wreck on it won't hurt as bad as something with say branches or packed icey snow.

When doing the trick just go through the steps in your head before hand so you aren't trying to remember them as you go. next thing to do is sack up and do it. If you don't get it, who cares its one wreck. hike it up and try again. Look for repeating patterns. For me for instance landing my 3 was hard because i did 180's all the time and stop at the 180 before completing my spin. What helped me get over that was doing a 360spin on the ground not going into the air and just looking over my shoulder. after that it just naturally came through to looking all the way till i landed.


Good luck man, i started park last year and i was 15. its ok people can get into park whenever. The important thing is to not let fear hold you back.

I too am a terrible park skier, and have major problems committing to new tricks. I am older than you, and just started trying/barely landing 3's. All I do is focus on what I need to do to get the trick around, and keep only that thought in my head. Then all you have to do is keep that thought in your head and commit.

here's what worked for me:

Try and bring your belt buckle (or where it would be) all the way around to 360 helped me a lot.

Try on a very small park jump or just a lil jump somewhere. Don't get a lot of air

this probably sounds really stupid but i let the adrenaline of crashing get me going again. the first time i did an urban style box (side jump on) in NZ i was shit scared. it wasn't high or anything but i was still scared. eventually i just cleared my mind and went for it. sure enough i stacked, but it didn't hurt and the adrenaline i got from that made me take my skis off, hike back up and do it again without any pause at all. and it worked. the next time i had my mistake fresh in my mind so i knew what to correct and i got it right. almost the same thing happened when i learned 270s onto boxes and 360s.

honestly the thing that always works for me is to have friends around. For instance, I was skiing with my friend who was/is way better than me and he just kept pushing be to try it. I'm not saying try something that you aren't comfortable with, but just having someone I knew there saying "come on dude just go for it" really helped. Then when I dropped in i just thought about how I didn't want to puss out in front of my friends and I'd try it and usually either stomp it or get pretty close. I'm not saying that you should give in to peer pressure of trying something way out of your comfort zone, but having someone there to push you just past your comfort zone can really help.

just Huck it. theres a 90% chance you will land and even if you do eat shit its not going to hurt. the feeling you get from landing it will defiantly be worth the pain

What I do is just dont even think about it. I pulled my first 360 off earlier this season after several failed attempts. Spins, just turn you head fast enough and your body will follow. Worked for me, hope it does for you too.

props man asking the question, i'm in the exact same boat, although a bit older, and just getting into the park. hate the idea of tryin shit infront of people and bailing, just went out tonight with a buddy of mine to find a good spot we could build a jump to work on stuff away from eyes.

i'm not that good really, but i've found that its scariest before you tried it. then once you do and even if you fall, you realize it didn't hurt that bad and are willing to try again

A good thing to do before you try to 3 is to try it on flat ground, in like your basement or something, just try to get the spin part way around so you get used to spinning past a 180. Then take it up a notch and try it off a little jump and work your way up slowly. Like other people have said spin your arms to try to get the spin off better, and if your stopping halfway through the air, heres a little tip. Whatever way your head is pointing your body will follow it. So that means that if you keep your head pointing to the left and your shoulders turned to the left also when your spinning your body will follow, making the spin easier. Hope this helps a little bit, good luck man.

I don't know if anyone else gets this, but for me I'm always super uneasy about trying anything at my park until i fall for my first time. After that first fall though, i feel invincible and completely confident in myself and my tricks

if you think you're gonna fall, make yourself not
if you drop in and you're not gonna commit 100%, don't even hit the feature
if you're not comfortable, don't do it

and ski with friends who are at the same skill level or just better than you
it makes you want to try harder to one up them or keep up with them
if they're too good then it's intimidating

The other thing is you need to make sure you don't get too comfortable doing one trick. I had 180's down perfectly before I even thought about a 3 and all it did was make it harder for me to commit to the extra rotation.

always go into a trick trying your best, but knowing you are going to fall. once you fall and realize its not that bad, you can focus more on the mechanics of it, and thats when the trick will really start to come along.

Haters are gonna hate. But as for your situation. DONT THINK ABOUT IT. the more you think about it the more you talk yourself out of it and find excuses like, "ill do it next run". Just throw your balls over your shoulder and go for it. As for 360s. cock your hips and shoulders. If you torque your upper body you should be good. falling is going to happen. but thats the name of the game. good luck.

Fuck it and Huck it dude. Landed my first one last week. I think it's easier to try it on a bigger jump because you have more room to rotate. You just gotta go for it dude.

The first time I tried a backflip, I was so scared. It took me straight up 20 minutes to sack up and throw it off of a 2 foot kicky jump. I had done it hundreds of times on the tramp, but never tried on skis. I landed it, and automatically took my skis off, ran back up the hill and did it again.

The same works with falling first. I've tried tons tricks where I'm unsure, worried, whatever before I drop in, and I'm sure everyone here can relate. The reality is, if you can at least commit to it (you don't have to land it first try), then you know what the trick feels like, and have a goal to land it. You can imagine it every day, do it on the tramp and diving board, or know exactly how it's done, but until you physically attempt it on your skis, it's different. I know that a lot of it is just being scared about the landing. Once you try a single time, you're going to realize that the trick is probably feasible, and not have to "sack up" to try it again, but will have a target, an ambition. Everyone goes through this process. I'm currently working up tricks to try, as well as everyone in this thread, because we all want to progress... and by doing so, we must go a little bit out of our comfort zone.

Good luck landing your first 3!! Try it on a small-ish jump you feel comfortable on. It takes 100% commitment!

The most important thing I have seen is familiarity. Lots of kids want to throw shit without having been through very much. They don't have a deep repertoire or bag of tricks to inform them on something new.

Even prior to doing like a 360, getting air awareness is key. Hitting jumps, large and small, understanding what a lip will do to you, work on gauging speed, how to pop and spot landings. All that good shit. Then, starting small. 180s, some 360s. Maybe hit a trampoline so you don't fuck up as often. Get them pat down, working on technique and style and solidity before going for other shit. Lots of kids get 3s then go right for 7s and the like, but they have no style or anything. But it is all about fun. Ramp up the size so you don't get pigeonholed. After a while, the other tricks become second nature, even on your first attempt. If you understand what you are doing, even if you crash, you can asses shit fast and improve rapidly.
Oh, and falling is important. It gets the jitters out, and you can learn how to fall well in the process.

Fear is what's holding you back young jedi. What you need to do is commit, commit, commit and then commit some more. Visualize in your head the trick that you are going to do, see it from 3rd person, and see yourself landing and riding away. For a 360 it's like 80% mental (yes I just made that percentage up, but you get the point), and once you get past that it's smooth sailing.

I think that learning a 360 is one of the hardest things you can do. If you're just learning a 360, you're also learning how to have air-awareness, and be able to pop correctly, stay balanced in the air, have confidence in your skiing etc. It's a lot of things to process. One of the most important lessons I learned when trying 360's was how to fall. When you know how to fall, you know that in most instances it's not "that bad" (don't get me wrong, it can still suck. a ton), and once you get over the fear of falling and injuring yourself the door is wide open to what else you can learn.

Stay positive, and keep trying, it'll come to you.


I suppose I should also throw in that it helps to move your WHOLE body, not just your head, not just your torso, but everything. Come into the jump with your core (abs and such) tight and a somewhat wide stance, shins against the front of your boots (but not leaning forwards), wait till your tips get to the lip of the jump, pop and THEN spin. Use your whole body to move around a vertical axis, and KEEP LOOKING. From what it sounds like, you're not committing enough to the full rotation and you're stopping at 180: if you do what I told you, and keep looking (because your body will go where your head goes) you will get the rotation down.

Ski with good people so you can see examples and sometimes when you don't do it they make fun of you making you want it more. Also just think about something else rolling up to the jump until last second.

yo, i'm 17 and i learned my 1st 3 when i was 14. one day i was wit a group of my friends, who were 10 at the time and we wanted to learn how to spin. we found a smaller jump in the park and kinda kiked it for a wile. it wasnt larg enough that if i knuckle it it'd hurt but also not too small that u could get a 3 around, but it was kinda a huck. i was the 1st to successfully get it outta my friends and they got pumped and then they stomped it. just don't try on a mad icy day, i'm from the east coast and it's always icy out here haha. but like what othas have said before in this thread, try picturin urself doin it. close ur eyes and go through the motions. also lead wit ur shoulders, i lead wit my skis and it's impossible to land that on a larger jump. when ur walkin round the house just jump up and spin regular and un-natty just to get ur body used to spinning.   i hope that helps brah

ya i know of this one guy who must have grown an extra 7 or 8, his name is tom wallisch, dont know if anyone has ever heard of him. But seriously for 360s just make sure you pop and make sure u wait right till the end of the lip to pop and set your rotation, or else you will spin on the lip and catch your skis.

i learned then a month ago im 12 and what i did was i told my brother that ill land it and i just thought its snow then just for shits and giggles i tried it thinking its just turning . for me it helps to simplify the trick and now i can pretty much 5

i did my first 3 on a 5ft table in a beginner park. what i did was kinda do some 3s on fat boxes so i kinda knew what it was gonna feel like. its just like a 180 but you keep going and theres a blind spot. just look over your shoulder and keep tight. you'll be all good.

how i got to the point of doing a 360 when i fist learned was going up the side of the landing and used it as a step up to the flat of the knuckle (this is in the small park) and just spun as much as i wanted. there were no consequences and it got my body in the motion of doing a 360. then on the hill across from my house on a tiny jump i spent 2 hours trying to land them over and over. the thing is you are gong to fall when trying a new trick its just doing that first one and realizing that you can really do it
