When/if you have kids when you grow up....

If I have kids i think im gonna run them through all the video game consoles i grew up on.

For example, ill start them out on NES with mario and mario 2 and 3 and other NES games i played as a kid.  Then ill get them super nintendo and have them play  super mario and donkey kong country 1 and 2. Then ill get them n64 a few years later and have them get blown away by mario 64 and pilotwings 64 and starfox 64. Then ill get them ps2 a few years later and have them play metal gear solid and atv offroad and dynasty warriors. then later ill get them xbox and have them play halo with their friends on 4 vs 4 system link games and have them play th underground and amped 2 above all else. Then ill have them play xbox 360  call of duty 2 and all the new stuff until they catch up.

But who knows what new game systems will come out in between then..

Anyways dont you think it would be cool to put your kids through the same video game upbringing that you had? I think it would be awesome to have your kids relive alot of the old games that you used to play.  Otherwise i feel like they wont appreciate how far games have come. I'm so glad i was alive when NES came out...

was anybody into the magnivox shit that was around before nintendo? that shits  hard core

I'm not saying that skiing is better, it doesn't work for everyone.. I'm saying that kids who have grown up with video games don't always have the motivation to go out and find something productive. I get restless and have to find something productive if I have nothing to do, video games don't always work. It's just how I was raised. I've asked for a console when I was 12 or so, my parents said no, so I moved on, went outside, took up hobbies. Other kids will ask and bitch and whine till they get what they want. And feel empty if they don't have it for awhile. I'm not implying that to anyone on this site.

It's all on how the parents decide to raise their kids.

Well of course. You want your kid to be an actual kid who loves being one. I was just saying that leaving video games out all together isn't really going to make your kid that kid, nor is letting them play video games. Its like I said, moderation. And parenting style as a whole.

Video games and school are conformist so my kid will not partake in these. They will make all their own clothing and study woodworking.

was i deprived because i didnt have a game consul until i was old enough to buy a PSone (baller alert, we bought a screen so we could play it in the car on long rides)


anyway, videogames are fine IMO in moderation, but i wont in any way allow my kid to let himself get consumed living in a virtual world.

lots of gaming haters in here. i've grown up with video games my whole life, and i'd like to think i'm far from fat or stupid. in fact, i'd probably be a worse person if i'd never played Mario or Coolboarders 2
or Gran Turismo
or Final Fantasy VII
or Banjo Tooie
or Tetris
or Pong
or with myself.

i suppose all of you "no video games" parents are also going to shelter your kids from watching television too right? it won't kill your kid to sit down for a while and play some video games. i'm a pretty hardcore gamer (i once spent over $6000 building a gaming rig), but i don't even play video games every day, or even every week. in fact, i don't see how a video game console is any more harmful than sitting here on the computer reading shitty threads on newschoolers. i'd certainly be learning a hell of a lot more if i was playing some Left 4 Dead right now instead of writing this stupid post on the internet.

i'm just glad my parents aren't as shitty as you guys are going to be.

Kid in anything they want. They can chose I will take them out skiing when they are old enough but if they don't like it I'll get them to try something else until they find something they like.

I'm going to go back on this and add something. Since I've been doing some thinking about it. Like I have said many times, raise your kid how you want.

To me, there is a difference between getting your kid a console, and supporting/encouraging it.

Like K-rob and many others have stated, you can be a gamer, and still do other things out there in life. Such as focus on school, friends, and hobbies. It's self moderation.
It's the idea of supporting and even encouraging it that gets me though. Children are learners, and they need influences in their lives. They'll look up to anyone older, and most of the time, it's the parents that are around. So in OP's case, your child might think that that is what your life was when you were a child, and that it'll be ok for the child to do it. This is where a problem might come in. So it'll be the parents role to moderate their child. Even all those people out there saying that they'll let their kid do what they want, not the best idea. Remember, children are like sponges, they'll take in anything that appeals to them. Parents need to moderate their children's actions more, or your child will just end up out of control, or fat.

I'll allow a video game console or two, but I'd rather they have good equipment for skiing and they feel good about themselves, because feeling good about how you look and what other people think of you can really make an impact on a child. That may sound stupid, but we are talking about children.

i am going to lock my kids outside in the summer and they are going to like it. n64 was cool when i was a wee lad, but i wasted too much time on it, the best days were packing a lunch and "camping out" with my brothers. spending hours searchiing for salamanders and climbing tree a whole 20 feet up, good times

In fact, the other day I was thinking the same thing, but replace gaming with skiing. I was thinking about how much fun I have skiing, and how deprived I feel my friends are who don't have the opportunity that I have had to be able to ski. I hope to be able to support my family happily and let them ski.
