Tips on skiing switch

Just cant seem to get it down. Any tips?

keep your head turned all the way over the shoulder that you spin (or whichever feels more comfortable). another thing is that to just have confidence, second guessing any decisions skiing switch and you'll catch an edge.

Step 1: When you started out skiing, you were taught to snowplow! Apply that to skiing backwards.


Step 2: Now to initiate your turn:

If you want to turn to the right, try standing as tall as you can and point with your left arm exactly to the spot you want to turn to. When you finish your turn you'll bring your arm back, and look up at the slope for a split second. Now look over your right shoulder and point with your right arm in the exact direction you want to go. Turn right turn left repeat, turn right turn left repeat.

Step 3. As you get more comfortable you'll notice a tendency to have a lead change with your skis (meaning the downhill ski while in a turn will be leading the turn, a stagger in other words) when you get to that point, work on your flexibility and you'll be carving switch as well as your carve forwards.

Go abit down in your kness, put the left ski abit further down the slope then the left ski. Face your chest towards the side of the slop and look over your shoulder for maximum view. You can also do it the other way around if you're more comfortable with that. Remember not to bend your kness too much, and chest facing to the side of the slop.


1. One ski infront of the other
2. bend little down in your kness
3. Chest facing side of the slope
4. look over your shoulder

that all sounded way to complicated.. its not that hard...


First rule: the closer your skis are together the easier it is for you to open your hips up and get a better view behind you

Second rule: use the first rule, but studder your skis (word?), by that i mean whichever way you are more comfortable facing, put that foot farther back than your other foot. this will open your hips up and out to that comfortable side. with your hips opened up youre body can turn more and you can see ALOT more.

Third Rule:

those 2 rules is how you ski switch.. just alternate sides and skis that are a bit farther back than the other, keep em close together, and once you figure the concept out youll start figuring out how to stay one way but carve both sides. thatll take some practice though.


For me, whenever i find myself on a groomer i just go switch to get that extra practice whenever i can

the key is practice. as you practice more and more, you'll be able to find what is easier/more comfortable for you and you'll develop a style of your own and you'll be good to go

People already covered the basics. And once you get it then you double the amount of tricks you can do, cause you can now learn them switch(; But that's a whole other story, throwing switch tricks...... Bottomline: practice on flatish groomers(steep enough because it's easier to lock into a turn with speed) and always make sure you can see where you're going.

you cann... its kindof like having a sucky shifter on a bike. where you have to look between your legs to make sure its on the right gear. And its easier the faster you go, more speed equals easier scissoring of the legs.

do it EVERYWHERE for like 2 weeks straight.

land switch off of every rail and every jump for upwards of 10 ski days should get you pretty comfortable

For me all I do is look backwards and kind of scissor my skis so if I want to turn left (from the point of view when riding switch) i put my right foot farther down the hill than my left and vice versa.

stagger you're stance and look over your shoulder, if you spin right look over your right, vice versa. Practice a lot... just forget about skiing regular till you have it.

i look over my left shoulder, but its more comfortable for me to have my left ski further up, and my right ski further back, i can't seem to fix this problem, anyone else?

I understand i'm supposed to have my left ski further back, if i'm more comfortable looking over my left shoulder? When i look over my right shouler i feel very unbalanced, and tend to put my left ski further back and my right ski forward?

try bending down a bit more and looking around your shoulder instead of over it, and put your left hand like where your tailbone is. that way, your torso should naturally be turned towards the left, and your right ski would be the one further up. if you're still having the problem after trying this, then you're doing some next shit lol
