How am I doing this season?

Last season was pretty fun. I had an HV30 and I messed around with it a fair amount. Then I crushed my shoulder(and ended my season), and I'm not as durable as I used to be. I upgraded gear this year, and I decided to take filming a bit more seriously. I've put together two edits so far, and I would love if anyone had some pointers or observations they would like to share with me.

My hill is sorta hard as far as shot consistency goes, because the weather changes super fast. Anyways, if anyone has some critiques for me, then that would be wonderful.

nice work man. all I can say is just keep working at it, the more you film/edit the more natural/better it will become. one thing I do think you could add to these edits, however, would be more lifestyle type shots; something to mix up the flow of the edit. rather than just ski shot, ski shot, skit shot ya know? would just add a bit more personality/story to the edit. but, like I said, nice work! I enjoyed them!

1st one- I love RJ, good balance with the slowmo, i kind of agree with goodie, a little something to break it up, or shorten it a little bit. You did a good job dealing with the different light. I could definitely tell which shots were not stabilized, some of the follows, etc. were a little shaky

2nd one- Same thing with stabilization, i'm no expert, but the colors almost created a cool kind of effect, it flowed nicely though

damn that was really good, the kid with the white b dog is a really goo skier too. the song on the first one was great, it seems like the lighting almost is an effect instead of just making it a weird looking shot. i liked how there where some head shots before you would see each kid ski, but maybe try to add a shot of the feature instead of the person beforehand for some variety.

Nope, I live in Seattle.


And the entire thing was stabilized, the camera never left my glidecam. I think it's that these were filmed with two days of total experience with it. I'm hoping to get a lot better soon with more practice.

I'll work on the addition of non-skiing shots, I was just feeling like I had so many bangers and not enough time to put in what I wanted.

nice edits man. i always see erik and jamie and all them at snoqualmie but i never see you filmin them. I film and make edits at snoqualmie but the skiers i film aren't nearly as good haha

I really like both of them. Adding more lifestyle or artsy shots maybe would spic it up a tad, but other than that they were flawless. Music choice on both of them was great.

Does anyone have any ways to contrast a black jacket with trees and such, without making the snow shine? Other people must have the same problem.

those were really sick, in my opinion dont change a thing, lifestyle shots could add a little somthin somthin but they arent needed to make the edits sick (youve already got that covered). keep up the good work

great mood, everything else was good but how you put it together had an awesome tone/feel to it.

Fresh edits man.

I feel like a lot of kids (at least those who ski at my hill) just stand on the landing of the jump or next to the jib and follow the skier from there every single shot. You had some, but they stilled looked really clean and your variety of angles was cool.

Good job, keep filming.

Really liked the first one, only thing I would say is to mix it up a bit. I found at times it was the same feature with the same slo-mo and I was getting distracted. But overall really awesome riding, and a great feel to it, just add a little diversity, maybe lifestyle shots or something to keep it fresh.

edits are crazy good, my only advice would be to get low angle shots. it makes all tricks look bigger. keep up the good work akrieg.

Few things....

Ghood:
Basically it seems like you've got a lot of the fundamentals of SHOOTING the shot down. This is what I struggle with and this is what really, I think, is the most difficult to improve on. Each shot is compelling, from the right distance, showing and enhancing the speed and/or action, while at an appropriate distance. Kudos.
Bad:
That motion tracking needs some work. And use a different font. I'm not sure what but it just looks odd. It seems like you just did it because you could. I am not saying to NOT use motion tracking. But just use it to enhance what titles your using. I can't think of very many good examples of the top of my head, sorry.
Ugly:
Editing. While this is highly subjective, this is what I had the biggest problem with. The cuts you did in the first one didn't make a lot of sense to me. While the music was building it was just a random shot of the chair lift for 10 seconds and then when the music started to "BANG" you started introducing everyone. I personally like to build the tension and then when the beat drops include either a banger trick or a breathtaking shot.

Overall you are WAY ahead of the game. Much, much better than 99 percent of videos online. I would just work on maybe planning out your edits ahead of time a little better [so that the mood and shooting style fits the music], or make the cuts a little differently.

Just as I hit "reply" I realized I had made a video for a trampoline contest to the same music haha. This is what I mean by matching the mood with the music for the cuts.
