T2i body

I am wondering if i should just buy a t2i body and get some good old cheap glass with adapters. Instead of buying the kit lens?
Just wondering if i saving a couple bucks would be worth it.

older nikon and canon glass will always be good, especially fast primes (1.4, 1.8, 2.8). If you want a zoom id suggest buying a modern one, but for primes you might as well get some older shit. check out ebay and www.keh.com

you cant have an old prime that is fast. they dont comunicate with the autofocus.

but yes get old glass and be prepared to manual focus

speed of a lens refers to the max aperture, nothing to do with the focus

Alot of people refer to a low aperture as being a fast lens, a lens that does better in low light, just a term, sorry. And you don't need AF for video...

and aperture effects the depth of field.. so it has something to do with focus...or how much is in focus.

yea, kit lens is garbage. eheath pretty much nailed it with his suggestion. the canon 50mm f/1.4 is also a sick lens (from what i've heard), you might want to look into that.

old pentax glass (k mount or m42, theyve used both) is also good, and can be found for relatively cheap.

Primes are called "fast" because they are generally more efficient at capturing light in a shorter period of time. People generally don't say that a lens has a "good aperture" because what exactly does that imply? "Fast" is more direct.

But yes, kit lenses are complete garbage. For the same price, you could buy two really nice vintage primes. Also, while I agree that vintage primes are generally better, that does not mean that all vintage primes are, by default, better. I've seen many many people buy shitty vintage lenses just because they are "vintage" and cheap.

Check out:
Pentax SMC 50mm 1.4 ($120)
Helios 44-2 ($20)
Contax Zeiss 25mm (~$350)
Carl Zeiss Jena (MC versions have better coatings)

All the aforementioned lenses are fast, and will give you a sharp, contrasty, Zeiss/Tokina style image. They don't match well with Canon lenses, though.

That was very helpful. Would an m42 adapter work for all of them? Or would i have to buy individual adapters for each lens?

They each require a different type of adapter, depending on the lens. Fotodiox makes great metal adapters that cost about $9.

It works for any lens as long as it has the appropriate mounts. All it takes to have a fully functional adapter ring is for it to both fit and be made of metal. Don't let any brand try to tell you otherwise.

Hey so I hate to bump a month old thread but id rather do this than get the typical "Searchbar" response so here goes. I am looking into possibly buying a t2i in the next month or so (still accumulating funds/doing research) but my question is: is the stock lens really that bad? like worth buying just the body and a lens separately, or will the stock lens be sufficient for learning and stuff as this will be my first quality camera.

If the lens is really that bad Id rather know now and look into lenses as well instead of assuming Ill be fine with the stock lens.

The stock lens isn't horrible but you can buy a body for 700ish and buy a good lens for whatever you are looking for. I bought the body and a 70-200mm f4 and am absolutely loving it.

I will look into it, how much did that lens run you? Im looking for a wide angle/fish eye as well as maybe a more well rounded everything lens (like the 17-200) that will provide me with enough for a wider variety of shots since i cant afford a bunch of different lenses

I got it used from a friend for who is a photo nerd for like 550. Keep in mind this lens is the f4 IS L series which runs about 1,200 new. I would also suggest something along the lines of a 30mm for the 1.6x crop sensor.

dont get the 17-200. any lense with that wide of a focal range is going to have some shoddy optics and at the very least some nasty distortion.
