Broken collarbone: recovery, skiing etc

So long story short, i broke my collarbone yesterday at the shoulder trying to nollie this little cliff, and was sent home from the hospital with nothing but a sling and pain killers. I was wondering if anyone else has had to deal with this recently, and how soon you could ski again (how long did it take for your shoulder to not be swinging independently by your side.) Im going to vail with a bunch of friends jan 3 for the biggest trip of the year, and wanted to know if i would be able to ski at least groomers with my sling on or something. Im planning on just sitting in my bed for the nex two weeks and resting my arm as much as possible in hopes that the bone will heal as fast as possible. Anyone had any experience with this anti-climactic injury?

Depending on how bad the break is, It could put you out for a good 6 to 8 weeks. You could ski in a sling and just take it easy if you are that eager to get back out. Or you could be like Gus Kenworthy and fucking slay the park in a sling. Your choice, duder.

Skiing in a sling shouldn't really hurt it too much, just as long as you don't fall on it. But your instinct is to put out your arms when you fall. Don't do this because it hurts. Just try to fall on your good side...

yeaa i know the bone wont completely heal for like 8 weeks, but i didnt know what level id be at in 2. i feel like im comfortable enough on my skis to not fall just cruising on groomers if im not being stupid, but then again ive never skied in a sling haha

sorry bro but i broke my collar bone once and its not a good idea to ski in 2 weeks from now and afteryour of the sling they give you like a bra thing and it sucks mad nuts.

i guess you can join the club though becuse i  broke my leg just over a month ago and im out till like march or something.

I broke mine last febuary and it still hurts if i land on it awkwardly....

I went skiing 7 weeks after i did it and it felt horrible, i think it depends on how it feels though, mine displaced a bit so it absolutely killed.

broke mine last season. Just under 2 weeks i was skiing groomers, but like every bump and arm movement caused pain. STAY OUT OF PARK. Just a light fall could rebreak it and send you back to day 1.

no way im going near the park or even big mountain shit, just wanna be able to ride wth my friends cus stayin in the hotel all day would kill. hopefully i can just harness my sling to my body and load up on pain meds haha. maybe just do some filming

i took a little fall 3 months after breaking mine and rebroke it, did more damage than the first time. be careful but its your choice

I broke mine really badly the doctor said 3 months till i could start to think about skiing. I went skiing after a month and it felt fine didn't hurt to badly. Then i made some bad decisions and ended up landing on my shoulder again luckily i didn't do to much damage.

Same, broke mine 7 weeks ago and was skiing last week fell and re-broke it. If you are going to ski definitely take it easy.

id say to speed up your recovery take calicuim and vitamin D pills ill broke my collerbone last day of the season last year but i dont think jan 3rd would be good cause the bone wont of set yet so it will hurt alot bouncing and will prolong your recovery and if it has started to set the slightest movement could put it out hope this helps Vibes! get better

I know someone that fell, dislocated their shoulder, and broke their collarbone. i had to drive him to the hospital. the whole ordeal sucked.

i broke mine almost exactly 12 weeks ago.  clean break.  waited about six weeks before i went skiing just to let it heal up good.  still pretty sore now if i go skiing or use the arm a lot, but its getting better and better.  after only a couple weeks i would be really careful skiing.

you can go skiing by then but your going to fall back into old habits poppin around the mountain when you ride with friends. Its going to feel like a snake bite and a punch everytime you land with high impact. buy one of those velcro braces that keep your back and shoulders straight, little Baileys in the coffee might help too.

I just wouldn't recommend it...personally, do what the doctor says, that way to wont risk further injury, and if you do ski, just take it SUPER easy. +vibes though.

yea i mean none of my friends really freestyle at all, and i'm always the one leading the pack to the park and cliffs and shit. i feel like with me injured, no one will really be tempted to do anything but smooth groomers. limited bumps and surprises hopefully.

Yeah i fractured mine last year and the doctor said 6 to 7 weeks. I was skiing groomers by the 4th week. If u hit any bumps in your path you'll feel a bit of pain but its not really a big deal. Make sure you never fall though and if u do then make sure you land on the other side..

mine is broken right now. its been 3 weeks now and i feel like i could go skiing cautiously in the jib park
falling would almost definitely fuck me over

and you wont be wearing a sling after like a week and a half its just unnecessary and my doc said its only for comfort after like a week

you want to stop wearing your sling as soon as possible so you lose less motion and strength in your shoulder

as soon as you feel good with it off
theres not really much you can do to speed it up

and just saying newschoolers isnt really the best source for medical advice

I have broken mine 4 times, both twice. at the first time i broke my left one just a bit, and the doctor said i could ski after 3 weeks. then i went skiing and the bone rebroke when i just jumped a little. i was able to ski with the sling at the next day almost without pain, even jumping. after that the season was over and i had time to recover it well and i felt good like after 6 weeks. the third time i broke my right pretty bad. it took 2 months to be ok. fourth time was the worst when my right collarbone went in two pieces that also took about 2 months. i think if your collarbone feels just ok and doesn't really hurt you could just go ski a little but not go to the park. just do how it feels the best and dont break it again.

and yea ns isnt my source for medical advice as much as skier experience. no doctor will tell me what it's like to ski with a broken one. im about to go see him tuesday, but i just wanted to get some insight here also. it still puzzles me though, how is the bone suppose to heal without being set? mine isnt a compound fracture, just one break kinda near the middle. i feel like even in a sling, the two ends of the bone arent always touching, so how are they suppose to heal?

Ive broke my left collar bone twice. both times i had it out of the sling within 3 weeks skiing in four.

just broke my collar bone a week ago today... broke it real bad the bone broke through my muscle and i needed surgery and got a plate to fix it will be out in 3 months which blows big ones. got alot of talk from the doctor saying that i will feel better in a few weeks but if i go to hard i have a huge chance of breaking it again which would do more damage because i have a plate and six screws in it

so its u to you its a big risk. it might ruin your whole season instead of a month

dislocated my shoulder last year 5 days before a trip to jackson. although they are 2 totally different things u should be able to at least ride groomers in your sling. dont miss the trip. oh and somb ftw

Yeah that was me. Went skiing for the first time today in seven weeks. To any one that broke their collarbone: i know it feels better in 3 weeks but def wait a good six weeks because a minor fall could start the whole process over and then some

I broke mine about 4 weeks ago. I skied today for the first time. No jumps or anything though. Just gonna ski groomers and such until 6 weeks, when the doctors say I can be back, full swing
