Help me make my Dad stop smoking.

How long has he been smoking cigs for? Sometimes if people have been smoking for a long time, Its pretty hard and nearly impossible to make them quit.

about 40 years i think. he is 58 or 59 and his dad died at 64 from a heart attack relating to cigs. Thanks i gained respect for you.

my grandma smoked for like 50+ years and quit so it's possible
really let him know how much it hurts you and if he still ignores it do something drastic
not shoot someone or OD on heroin but something that gets him to think 'damn i need to stop for my son and me'

Just sit him down and talk to him and get him to realize that cigs are extremely bad for you and all the bad shit it does to your lungs. My parents are just arrogant about it and they have been smoking for like 20 years. Also try to get him on some sort of quiting treatment plan.

make him realize it goes beyond him. It's things in the future away from him. Stuff like seeing you and any siblings go through major life events, grandchildren, and whatever else.

But damn, after smoking for that long...thats a huge thing to overcome.

your best bet is to guilt him into quitting

This. My parents have been smoking my whole life and most of theirs, If they don't want to they won't and probably couldn't even if they tried.

Is an effective way to help him quit. Theres lots of good ways to help him quit. If he doesn't want to quit, It might not happen. It sucks but that might just be the way it is. Good luck though. I tried getting my parents to quit but they just are arrogant about it and they don't like the quitting programs.

have you told him your really depressed about it? i know how you feel, but i got my dad to quit. dont lose hope.

thats one of those things people need to decide for themselves, you cant force change on people. sit down with him and make him see the error in his ways, he has to make the decision for himself. best of luck and make sure he knows youre only pressuring him because you care

This. I'm not a heavy smoker, but I do smoke everyday. Combine that with stress from university and unhealthy food and you've got a pretty scary mix. I woke up last friday and felt an intense tightness in my chest for the first time. It scared the shit out of me. I've tried to quit before but never actually stuck to it because I wasn't motivated. I haven't had a cigarette for 5 days now, and the thought of one just scares me. Its crazy how addictive nicotine is. My mind has been craving it, but I just never wanna feel that scared ever again. Its been an intense last couple of days but I know it will be worth it in the end. I really hope I can continue the cessation and not relapse.

Quitting requires a lot of work ethic and control. Unless you want to quit, it is basically impossible.

Tell him that this decision is his. It is about the family and everyone in said family is worried about his health. Then specifically say "I am worried about you, dad".

my father smoked for over 30 years before his father and mother both passed within 2 years of each other from smoking related diseases. This is what finally drove my father to quit. to watch his parents struggle for every breath and then finally pass was too much for him, he decided it was selfish to continue, and possibly put me in the situation that he had just gone thru. If you can articulate this idea to him, it might hit home.

It does not just effect him, it effects everyone that is close to him, cares for him, knows him. it is about seeing a greater worth in those last few years that you might/might not have. I hope this somehow helps. I feel for you, and cannot explain in words how much it means to me for my father to have quit something that could have taken him from me early.

First off, you can't MAKE him do anything. 'you can lead a horse to water, but you can not make it drink...'

The best approach would be to get the whole family behind him to take the first steps ie deciding to quit in X amount of time. Provide incentives, get right behind him and the rest is all up to your dad.

i dont exactly remember how i got my mom to quit (sortof) or why she did but im pretty sure i was just always pretty upset about it and while typing this i kidna remember that it was because of some surgery she had she had to quit smoking for a bit or somthing.....

ANYWAYS

suggest the niccorette inhaler thingy. my mom does not like the gum or that patches or any of that stupid stuff but this thing is all that she does now ( except for the occasional smoke) and even though she is still addicted to the nicotine it is still better then straight cigarettes all day. she had been smoking since she was like 14 or so and im really happy that she switched to the inhaler atleast

try smoking in front of him. make him think that you started. or try giving them a really well thought out and smarth powerpoint and persuasive essay. make a plan for him and try to do it in steps.

or smoke weed and if he finds out you can say that its not as bad as smoking and you can do what you want if he is going to poison himself.

really though, it's probably too late for him. Even if he does quit he's been smoking so long he'll probably still have severe medical repercussions from many years of it. Might as well keep going.



















REALLY really though, cold turkey is the only way to truly quit. you just gotta sack up and be man. tell him your gonna disown him unless he quits.

. Nickotine patc maybve? My grandma had to go on oxygen because she smoked so much and then she was afraid to smoke. But that didnt help much because she passed away about a month later. Its really cool that your trying to get your dad to quite. Good luck man.

I'd just sit him down and talk to him about how much it is hurting you and how much his smoking scares you. He may not be able to quit just for himself but if he knows how much it matters to you it might give him the motivation he needs.

i really think the best way is to sit him down, force him to listen to you, and tell him he needs to quit, its making you super depressed. etc... and if he doesnt, then just try harder and harder, and make it worse and worse for him.
steal his keys, lock him out of the house, make shit miserable for him.

honestly, id punch my dad in the face once a day till he stopped, each time tell him im doing less harm than that cig he's about to smoke. shit i like the above idea about breaking his ribs and telling him lung cancer will hurt worse. if it got him to stop smoking id be 100% happy about what i did.

we got my friend to quit this way. everytime he tried to hang out, go skiing, meet girls, etc.. we'd be physically hurting him (not too badly) telling chicks he's an asshole and has a huge smoking problem. and just constantly giving him as much shit as we could about it. he quit pretty damn quick. i feel awesome about it.

but really the most effective way might be to show him that his habit is harming you and your family.
