JOI 2011 question

Jon set up a new judging format this year that looks great. I only have one question about it though.

Qualifiers

-30 skiers take 2 runs, best one counts, 10 move on. (+ 2 wildcards)

Finals

-12 skiers take one run, top 10 advance.

-10 skiers take one run, top 8 advance.

-8 skiers take one run, top 6 advance.

-6 skiers take one run, top 4 advance.

-4 Skiers take two runs, best one counts.


What if 5 out 12 skiers fall? how would the judges decide what 10 advance?

Well see that's how it's flawed. Those who ski later have a massive advantage. As the guy who said above... Why not do a 3 like kevin rolland. You're way more likely to land it, yet still move on. Care to explain jon?

I have a feeling that after these pros sesh this jump for a week they will have their tricks on lock. Its going to be sick regardless.

In any competition, people who fall aren't just written off, just given a low score. It'll be the same in this case. Their score will be reduced depending on the degree of the crash, so one person who fell will have a different score from another who fell.

No matter how many repetitions you do, a double cork 1260 has a reasonably high likelihood of either: not being stomped, landed super sketchy, or flat-out missed.

Jon could be doing this on purpose, making athletes put their money on their tricks, because if I had one shot, I certainly wouldn't throw my hardest trick. I would throw something I'm comfortable with, and try hard to make it look extra good, because the reality is that a couple people are gonna have sketchy tricks and will be givens to not advance.

I didn't mean to compare myself to them (as I'm nowhere close to doing dub 12s), but you can understand my metaphor.

You see my reasoning?

Word, in the end that's what it comes down to. Can a professional athlete do the best trick with the best style and the best landing? If so, he gets the title, not to mention some guap!

Hahaha, that would be true... but I'm saying there are 12 competitors, 10 advance to the next round. In this hypothetical situation, a few people fall at the beginning (more than two) and one of the last riders is about to drop in. I'm pretty sure anyone would agree he is a retard if he doesn't three that jump. This is why the riders who drop last have a huge advantage over the one who guinea pigs the jump.

they will be judged on what the trick was and how they looked until the crash. so if someone were to do a dub cork 12 while maintaining composure and holding the grab until they crashed, they would get more points than someone doing a dub 12 and flailing when they realize half way through the rotation they arent going to make it.

I think that is a good idea. Maybe not an isolation chamber, but somehow not them see what their up against. Then they always have to throw their best bag of tricks

yeah because all you aren't complaining enough about how there's enough dubs being thrown...

an easy trick is a steezey trick and is a nice break from the "best bag of tricks". regardless if you're the first one to go or not, you have to land your tricks to move on and only the best wins, not the luckiest. if you don't land, you're not going to win and you don't deserve to win.

how many skiers will be there for the contest? 15? 20? more? Its probably posted somewhere, but i forgot.

Instead of doing the "best out of 3 runs" or "head to head" format, Jon should use the JAM format, like they did at the x-games big air last season. Have the riders session the jump for a certain amount of time, giving them more attemps at stomping their best tricks, and more time to throw in some stylish cork 7 or whatever they feel like.

This will not only be more viewer friendly, but it will also remove the problem of people falling giving the next person the opportunity to throw an easy trick and advance.

The riders would also not be stressed out abut only having 2-3 runs. If they fall, they can just run up top and try again.


I don't see any bad sides to a big air contest set up like this.
