Really? snow plow?

in the park, ive seen alot of people snow plow before hitting a rail or something to slow down. Is it that people find that easier than doing a short parallel turn or do people in the park just not know how to ski. Imo relying on the old snow plow is a sign of some one who isnt a strong skier. What do other ns'rs think?

i can do both, i just find snow plowing to be easier, although parallel skiing looks much better to me

Snow plow allows you to go straight at the rail and slow down at the same time.  I use it alot.

In a kicker inrun, it would probably be dangerous because of the speed. But in front of rails, it's convenient, because you can do it much quicker and very precise. A parallel turn sometimes is just too much of a hassle.

exactly..... when i go up to a rail with to much speed. i find that if i do a parallel to slow down. i slow down to much. if i snow plow i get rid just enough speed for me to still hit the rail
and ur body is still angled at the rail not off the the side.

depends. if i wanna shake off a tiny amount of speed before a rail i snow plow. parallel if im on a jump line.

Exactly this. a parallel turn usually changes your direction a little bit so if youre lined up well its advantageous to snowplow

Because I don't care about how people approach a feature in the park. I try to focus on my skiing and what I am going to do, how I am going to hit this feature and what I am going to do on this feature. Not if someone speed checks or snow plows to slow down for one.

here's my take on the subject....

the snowplow is a fundamental part of skiing...you have to have a solid snowplow to be a good skier. Although technically it shouldn't happen with the correct use of todays ski technology, for a split second you will find a snowplow like position in the the transition of many a strong skiers turns. Therefore it is a natural ( and probably the easiest ) position to resort to when trying to shave off speed or make small direction adjustments.

That being said I do it all the time to shave speed etc. on rails and jumps, but I would like to get out of that habit and use a more "parallel" technique because I think it looks much smoother. I find Nick Miles from montage to be a great example of someone who looks to be in complete control as they are rolling into a jump or rail. If we care so much about style in the air not to mention "afterbang" why shouldnt we care about style inbetween features?

i think that OP is a dumbass and that a quick snow plow is the most effective way to lose a small amount of speed quickly

and snowplowing might be one of the most ugly things you can do coming into a box or a rail... for everyone saying that throwing your skis side ways changes your direction, you all need to work on your edge control...   throwing your skis sideways shouldnt change your direction if you can properly weight your edges.

but all of that being said, NOTHING is worse then the switch snowplow.... please, oh please dont do this..

Don't see how I am dumb but okay. But I can see how snowplowing can be an issue. It can easily push snow off to the side of the inrun making it sort of a dip which would make it a bit difficult to set-up for the feature. Whatever slows you down and checks your speed for a feature is fine by me.

Snow plowing before rails is sometimes very necessary, sometimes you need to scrub a little speed in a very little amount of room, the snow plow is best for that. Plus, it keeps you in the same alignment with the rail, where as a parallel turn will most likely kick you off to one side a bit. Most of the time I try to use neither and just judge my speed properly cause trying to slow down or speed up tends to throw my focus off just slightly and I don't get the trick I want, but if I do use one it's the snow plow cause its quick and easy...it's pretty much second nature since it's one of the first things you learn, so you don't have think about it at all and therefore wont throw off your focus.

i think you are a fucking idiot. i have been skiing for my whole life, and the snowplow, first of all, is hardly ever taught anymore as how to learn to ski, and second, is a very useful tool.

I do this sometimes, mostly if the inrun is short, like on a backyard setup or a rail jam. Its a quick way to slow down without much room and also doesn't put you off stance for the rail.

i just think snowplowing is legit one of the uglier things you can do coming into something...   im not sure where all of these "tight" spaces you guys are talking about are, but normally, mountains build parks with more then enough room between features and around features where i cant see this being much of a problem.   how often do you see pros snowplowing into features? in a slope run? vid parts?   practically never.. and if they do, they should get penalized (in a slope comp) just as much as a revert does.

there is a difference in snowplows.. if someone is skiing in a snowplow that is a sign of a novice skier.. snow plowing is great when you need it.. less space taken up like imagine 4 skiers side stopping getting on a chair... cluster fuck city.. what about switch snowplows?

There is lots of ignorance in this thread. Strong skiers’ snowplow all of the time. It is by no means a sign of being a weak skier. To be honest to the OP though, if you’re asking this question you probably are not comfortable with your own skiing ability. Just have fun and ski and enjoy watching others ski!

my thoughts exactly, and as CT_Crew said, since skiers are so focused on looking the best possible in the park, why snow plow. personally i think it looks slopy

i don't really see the big deal, you can easily tell the difference between someone who throws a quick plow to shed speed easily and a person who snowplows cause theyre not comfortable with edge control

plus ive seen tanner do it before, so it's legit! /half sarcasm
