A solution to the "grey area" - crackdown for the best

Listen. Everyone has major butthurts right now about everything. Conversations in threads, spambots, lack of moderation, too much moderation, 4chan shit, pointless threads, etc etc etc. Well there is a solution, and if everyone just agrees to do it for a month or two (amount of time to make/break habits) we can SIGNIFICANTLY change ns.

The solution is cleaning up the grey area. These are the threads/posts that are stupid but don't violate any rules and the members that push the limit but don't break anything. What do we do with this stuff? Delete it. You complain about 4chan being a cesspool? guess what, it runs better than NSG at times because they actually moderate it, and clean up the shitty "grey area" and leave stuff worth leaving. A thread looses focus? deleted. Conversation starts up that is dumb? deleted. It's not hard to do, and if everyone realizes that it's going on shit will start to shape up. It's not that hard to do here, in fact its easier than having to determine what's grey or not. If it draws a question, its out of here. Trust me, it works.

Its not the quality of members or moderation issues. How about just stop posting.

If you have nothing to contribute, you dont need to post.

Again, just so I'm perfectly clear, if what you've typed out in response contributes, eh, pretty much fuckstick, then just dont post it. We'd be better without it, and I thank you personally for not filling the thread up with worthless words.

Remember, as one, you can post a shitton of garbage, but hopefully together, we'll post nothing save what actually needs to be said.

ok, yes i do post in gear talk quite a bit, yes i do post in the jiberish thread because i like jiberish. the reason post more in GT is becuase i wanna learn more about gear. i admit i make some really stupid posts, but is that really a reason to hate me over the internet? and now ever fucking FS jiberish thread i see has "No Kangbang allowed", whats up with that?? anyways to the mod thing. i would like to be a mod but i dont care if im a mod or not.

if there was evidence to show i was part of the problem i'd admit it. i'd say i would have been part of the problem 2 or more years ago, i posted pretty hard back then to get to my post count up. nowadays i definitely couldnt put myself in that category, the rare posts i make these days i try to make as thought provoking as possible. i cant tell you how many times i've typed out a response to a thread in the past year and not end up posting because i know it wouldnt be helpful to 90% of the site. You should love being the scapegoat cause your actually part of the problem, posts need to actually be given thought before clicking reply IMO..

its a phase for most people bro. seriously this summer I hit my posting area, Now I'm lucky to post hardly at all, I again do the whole, is this worth posting dance for a lot of my "posts" most of which I don't end up posting in. NSG was really high traffic during the summer and it has slowed down significantly. the rest of the site, ya have fun waiting 15 minutes for a reply which is the only reason why I hang out in NSG.

We are all at one point part of the problem, it's the fact that people(old users) think they are so high an mighty cause they went through their "Problem Stage" already that ticks me off.

I honestly don't understand it. So he's stoked on a couple companies that happen to be really trendy. So are a lot of kids on here. And you know what? They're skiers, and I always thought one of the signs of an addict skier was a pointless obsession with ski gear and ski related products. NS is pretty much the only place you can go for that. I can put up with trendwhores all day (I was victim to, and probably still kinda am, many pointless skier trends), it's the non-skiing-related trolling that really gets to me.

Not gonna go on a rant on what I feel is wrong with NS right now for the third time today, but I think it's the distance from skiing of the website, and even the fact that our sport is getting bigger and inherently more impersonal (just think to the days when you were like instant best friends with any skier that rocked twintips at your mountain), that's contributing to the problem.


But that's off topic. I think moderation should definitely get stricter. Everyone's finally noticing that we have a problem, so what's to lose if we do something drastic?

you guys talking about postwhore reminded me of a story... there once was a member named mattman. you might remember him from his 9 year thread. well mattman was a postwhore. except he was a normal postwhore. mattman created HUNDREDS of cults in which he did his postwhoring where he accumulated thousands and thousands of posts. this he thought made him special. so special infact that thought it gave him power over other members. but the members soon realized he was a pompous ass and he disappeared from the site.

Thats Very Interesting. Actually, Truthfully I've stopped caring about my post count, or my Karma rating, shit just changes constantly, as long as I know kinda a ballpark where I am(What Thousands I am in for posts.) I'm find. It's not like I'm racing for 10K+ I truthfully don't give a fuck, I post a lot cause I have a lot to say.

true words man i agree the majority of members do have a stage full of feverish random posting when they get really hooked on NS, its just the quality in this random posting has dipped to an all time low. The posts lack depth and are strewn with the worst meme's that are usually used to ridicule a thread creator asking for some simple advice. Old users see all this useless crap and negativity that didnt exist in such high levels before, and bitch out the newer members for creating it. The newer members then bitch back at the older members because they think they have seniority and never do anything wrong. Its just creating a shit-storm which will turn into an all out shit-blizzard at some time or another if we dont turn stuff around! weather anyone thinks they're part of the problem or not, we should all be pitchin some positive energy to make NS a better place for everyone here

I see your point about the memes and all the bullshit, but times have changed, the internet isn't what is was, NS isn't what it was. Older Members with their "Seniority" Might not like it but it is what it is. At least It is decently kept in NSG instead of being spread like a disease to the rest of the site. The Picture section downfall really was the start of this IMO.

Defintely want to get away from the whole site ending up a grey area

If it becomes a case where people expect that it's fine to post shit because it will just get deleted anyway, then nobody will consider thinking about a thread before submitting it.

It comes back to the old 'if it's a shit post then don't post it'

I think i'm just going to say out of NSG for awhile. Shit has really been hitting the fan recently...

I spend most of my time in LM, GT or Regionals giving advice to ppl that actually need it. It like to think of my advice as if i was having a group discussion with everyone here. How stupid do you think you would look if you just stood up in front of everyone and yelled "FIRST" or "IN B4"? shit needs to change. Its all fun and dandy to get laughs out of people but be creative about it at least.

no doubt the current mods convene and lock themselves inside the legion of doom headquarters to debate for 7 days. (The first 6 are spent browsing, and spending donated money on igucci)

Well i personally agree with Jamie. If we can get a sizable group of ns'ers to consistently post quality posts that are beneficial to the group, i feel that others would look at the positive posts and maybe feel inspired to do the same. Cleaning up the grey areas is just part of the problem, significantly changing your ways is also important.
