Compact Tripod for Skiing

Hey all,

I was considering buying a tripod to set up shots, and I was wondering if you guys knew of any that were relatively compact (could fit into a backpack) and would work well for the side of the slope

For the most part there are two types of tripod heads for filming. Ones that have fluid heads are very smooth and let you get very smooth pans and tilts. The others that don't have fluid heads tend to not be smooth at all. They kind of skip when panned and tilted and for the most part are only good if you keep the tripod head in the same place. Tripods with fluid heads tend to be much more expensive.

Couldn't I just get an older one? I mean, lets be honest, how much has tripod technology really changed in the past few years?

an older one would probably be fine if it is in good condition and well taken care of. The only part of tripod technology that has probably changed is the size.

that's not a fluid head. looks cool, though you sacrifice pretty much all of the pros of a professional tripod for weight and size with that thing.

ya i know haha. i dont really have a big camera so it'd work for me. I know it's not fluid but i just looked up compact tripod and it was a possibility. How would you find old tripods? I need a compact tripod too so i'm interested

I borrow my sister's tripod any time I need something really compact/lightweight that can still support my DSLR. This thing is killer, but not inexpensive:
