What is free skiing?

So last week i was put in an ackward situation.

i was asked by my dads co-worker what i do during the winter. i obviously told him i like to freestyle ski. Then he asked me what that was (he's from holland). I came across a problem because i had no clue how to describe it. I thought i might show him an edit but i didn't know which one. I didn't want to show some thug edit that made free skiers look like a bunch of wanna-be thugs (which most are), but i also wanted to show something that showed a good repersentation of what freeskiing is today.

so my question to you is...

If you had to show someone what freeskiing was what edit would you show them?

both are technically freeskiing....

Simply put, free skiing isn't one type of skiing or another. It's skiing freely, anywhere, anyplace and on any terrain you want ski on. Sometimes it's hard to see but that's what makes the sport so cool. What Andy Parry does on urban and in the park is just as much apart of the sport of freeskiing as what Sage does in Alaska. Neither are bound by a rule book of "this is how you're supposed to do it" which in my opinion, is pretty fucking rad.

After giving your Dad's Holland friend a answer similar to that, show him your favorite edits and say, "This is the kind of freeskiing I'm into." Booyah!

In someways, I don't consider big mountain skiing as freeskiing, mainly because usually I try to explain what it is by describing newschool stuff - tricks, rails, going switch etc. It is probably the most free form of skiing, but you understand what I mean.

doing whatever you want on skis and having fun doing it. The streets, your backyard, a halfpipe, Breck jump, or AK line, w your preference, as long as your having fun.

In my opinion, freeskiing is ANY skiing, where there aren't rules, regulations or restrictions. You, the skier, are free to choose to do whatever you want to do.

While I support competitions, and feel that they elevate the level of sport and skill, competitions within park skiing, or big-mountain skiing, are no longer freeskiing.

Hell, the guy in jeans, making wedge turns is essentially freeskiing just as much as you or I.

I think you should tell the guy what it is to you, not to everyone else. Personally, I sure as hell wouldn't want someone thinking my passion can be represented by gymnasts flying through the air or skiing phenomenal lines that I will never be able to imagine. Not that I don't think that stuff is the hotness, but thats just not MY freeskiing

break the word down: "free" as in free of any 1 truly defined style, rules or restrictions. free to do whatever you want.

i think thats why the idea of "freeskiing" was kind of hard to define for those older skiers. until maybe 10-15 years ago there was this idea of how skiing should be done. if you took lessons or were taught back then, you were to ski a certain way, to do things one way in order to ski properly. there wasnt a lot of huge hucking off 50 foot tables, or big parks with a lot of jib features, or awesome butters, or guys hitting 10-100 foot cliffs doing double backs or crazy spins. 90% of skiers back 10, 15, or 20 years ago all skied the same way and essentially were not "free" of anything. now days there are soooo many types of skiers doing all sorts of cool and fun things all over the mountain or urban areas that the sport has been "freed."

The only reason that situation would ever be awkward is because you're awkward. It's not like he asked you for your favorite porn site.

I just tell people it's like snowboarding, in the terrain park. If that isn't enough I say "You know, like the x games shaun white slopestyle stuff?" If they aren't familiar with the x games then they are never going to figure it out so give up there.

So he's dutch, right? Well, it's pretty simple then. Just tell him "freeskiing" is what dutch people do on the slopes each winter. Because that's what they do. Ski the way they want, free, completely ignoring what ski instructors (like me) try to tell them. :D

Don't get me wrong: I like them, they have a fantastic attitude. But their skiing is pretty wild and unique. ^^

well i guess it depends on what kind of free skiing your talking about, but if you were speaking about park skiing which i assume you were, i usually just say its like what snowboarders do, if you are spefically trying to anwser your question. most peope have seen park snowboarding at some time and then get it. i mean the whole were not lke snowboarding thing is bullshit. park skiing would not exist without snowboarding plain and simple, and to say it would just shows your lack on knowledge on the subject. if he hasent see snowboarding however you are probably going to have to use skating or whatever you see the next closest sport to be

Too bad none of your definitions is usefull in any way, and all of them could be put under various sports (especially those considered "extreme") just by changing definiendum.

Be realistic; freeskiing has rules, heck, it does even have a dress code ;)
