Sorry if this is a repost, but last night the city of Toronto (extremelyyy liberal) elected a man named Rob Ford, who is probably the most right wing mayor in Canada. Basically the background is the current mayor fucked up the finances real bad, huge debt, no respect for tax payer money, and this guy ran to end the "gravy train". In 10 years Ford's had over $500 000 given to him in expense budgets and never touched a dime. I personally love the guy because he tells it like it is and doesn't polish anything. Plus he's going to cut taxes and fees like crazy and dismantel the socialist regime at city hall.

However, he has said some really greasy stuff, check it:

Nice work Toronto... ugh.  Rob Ford.  Maybe it is time to look to your friends in Calgary afterall.  That guy is an utter embarrassment, and although I think Toronto is great, I just lost a little respect.

Fuck him.

I had a friend that was doing an energy mapping project for the city of Toronto. She had been completely dedicated to this, and had worked her ass off for a long time on this project, only to have the new mayor come in and pull the plug on it.

Other than that, he does seem like a fat fuck, his thoughts seem to be those of an ignorant as fuck red-neck.

facebook was pretty hilarious after rob ford won. so many ignorant kids its amazing. hating the guy because he is going to cut down on grafitti. the youth of today are amazing!!

No, it's good to know where a politician stands, but just because he does, in fact, stand for something, doesn't necessarily instantaneously make that politician someone worth listening to or at least worth respecting.

I guess in that regard, he's worth respecting because he does say what he stands for, but he is pretty blantantly an idiot.  For that, I can't respect him.



Not saying that they are, but Canadians should be polically mindful, and shouldn't just play into the platitudes and BS some idiot spouts.  The problem with people, and democracy in general, is that people rarely engage themselves enough, so they go with what they "know" or hear.



Yeah Ford, rip out those Streetcars... that'll help TO.  Get rid of those bike lanes... good boy, turn Toronto into the most unsustainable city in NA.  Excellent work.  Toronto is a big city and it damn well better act like it.

Sorry guys, but this isn't about partisanship.  This guy, straight up, is crap.

Get a fucking clue kid, do you realize how inefficient street cars are? They're half the reason traffic in downtown T. is so goddamn bad. I'm pretty sure there are larger cities than Toronto, without street cars that don't have a horrid problem with pollution.

thats cool. give more road to the bikes, so that the majority of the people who commute from outside of the city in their cars get bigger headaches. and lets not forget that it is those people in the boroughs who amalgamated with old toronto because it was pretty much bankrupt. we prop up the city with our tax dollars, and then you want to purposely make it more difficult for us to use our car to commute? i don't think so.

Is this where I mention that I'm currently studying a Masters of Transportation Systems course that is largely unique to the entire world?

I hate to play that card, but "kid" doesn't quite work for me.  Steetcars are not ineffecient.  They are only your personal objective perspective of what inefficiency is.  Single occupancy vehicles are the definition of inefficient.   They work for small centers, but large urban areas don't do so well without mass transit.  In fact, there is essentially no such thing [large urban center where mass transit doesnt exist], whether informal or formal.

Efficiency and perceived personal freedom are not even close to the same thing, so don't try and argue it. 

You made the original claim, so why don't you name a city with a larger, equally dense population that has no pollution problems?  Well, assuming that your assertion makes logical sense to begin with.

Perhaps you can start your search with the mega cities in Asia, Africa or SA?  Or take a look at some US cities with very underdeveloped systems?  So, no pollution?  Regardless (and do tell if your in depth research leads you to conclusion that substantiates your claim,) that is not even close to the only factor that needs to be looked at.  You are, after all "pretty sure."

All this is moot anyway.  Ford is terrible for continuing to push TO into the world city that it could easily become.  His thought process appears to stem from 20 years ago.  Things have changed.  I'll let him do his thing, but I have very little faith.

Anyway, if you care to continue trying to argue that the personal vehichle is somehow more efficient, you should start a new thread so as not to derail this too much.

I can start off by saying look at Cape Town. In terms of pollution, it has less than Toronto, quite a bit less pollution. I've been to Cape Town multiple times, and it's actually IMHO far nicer than Toronto(aside from all the coloreds trying to sell you stuff) In terms of actual pollution, my brother has asthma and it becomes much worse when he's in an urban center that has pollution, none whatsoever in Cape Town or Jobo(anecdotal evidence I know, but evidence nonetheless). Your research may say otherwise, but after having spent 3 months there over the past 2 years, I can say it is not nearly as bad as Toronto(while having a comparable population). My sister who I am currently talking on the phone with has a Masters in Environmental Sustainability from UWO agrees with me on this, Hout Bay/Cape Town is decidedly less polluted than Toronto, while having a comparable population. While you do grasp transportation systems quite well, I don't believe you understand the environmental ramifications.


You, and every other bleeding heart Liberal don't realize that maybe Toronto will come out of this for the better, you won't hemorrhage money while trying to accomplish the simplest of tasks. If I didn't know better I would assume you were a second year Queen's polysci student.

The thing that pissed me off the most during his "bike lane" speech was that 70% of Toronto's cycling accidents are caused by the number one public transit polluter and waste of space, FUCKING STREET CAR TRACKS. I cant tell you how many times i have bailed biking the streets of queen/spadina area, fucking terrible system.

SMALLER GOVERNMENT at every level including municiple is GOOD.

look at the states for example. People voted for Obama there "the messiah" he was suppose to accomplish so much but what happened... unemployment is at DEPRESSION LEVELS, food stamp usage is at DEPRESSION LEVELS, the US dollar has been devalued to shit to the point where i wipe my ass with 1$ bills (sometimes) haha... in a few days you will witness the democrats lose a shit tonne of seats to the republican party because of their stupidity.

Bike lanes are great but realistically they just don't work in Canada. You have 5 months out of the year to use them, and to be honest there not used that much. The other 7 months of the year they sit there and clog up traffic...

i use them for a solid 8 months in toronto, and my dad usually bikes to work so a little snow wont stop him. he bikes to work 12 months a year.

do you really think we are covered in snow for 7 months of the year? it would be great if that were true, but some americans are so uninformed its just ridiculous.
