Do you wear a helmet when you ride?

We were having this discussion at the office today, and I'm wondering what the general populace of newschoolers says.

I remember back in like 2001-2004 or so, what I would consider the "heydey" of my skiing ability... very few people wore helmets when they were riding. I mean even guys like Tanner and Candide would wear hats when competing in the x-games.

Hell... I never wore a helmet unless someone forced me. I don't even think I had a good reason. When I ask myself why, really it all came down to fashion and comfort. Didn't like the feeling or look of helmets.

However, more and more these days I see helmets almost everywhere. Of course part of that is because here in Quebec, wearing a helmet in the terrain park is mandatory. I know its the same in some places in Ontario, and at Whistler... but how many other parks are like that?

So I pose the question to you - do you ride with a helmet? What fuels your decision either way?

I don't see why you wouldn't. It keeps you safe and at the end of the day that's all that matters

depends really. If I know I am gonna spend the whole day hitting rails, then probably. It I am charging then definitely. always on urbans. Hitting like BC booters I don't usually because there isn't much of a point (maybe buried rocks) and it sucks to hike with. If it is spring and I am just crushing bumps or doing chill laps through the park then maybe not.

I guess what it comes down to is if I remembered to pack it, I might as well wear it. It's like longboarding or biking. Like really you should always wear a helmet, but do you wear a helmet boarding around campus or biking to the grocery store?

I wear a helmet every day. The only days last year i didn't wear a helmet were at the end of the year after the park had closed at sugarloaf and i was just shredding bumps. I also didn't wear one at mount hood for awhile but i would put it on if i was trying anything new.

Yeah I do wear one cause I tend to smash my head form time to time and it is a lot better to have a helmet on in those cases.

anyway they are more comfortable and look better these days i rock a Bern which is nice. Click for larger image

si also goggles, i've smashed goggles on trees and rails, never figured em for that kinda eye protection..

when i am skiing for real i always do, but my mountain is so small all the instructors know me and my dad that they will tell my dad if i am not and he will get pissed, so i have to but its a good thing over all

yes.

just about always. sometimes for the sake of overheating or just adjustment i'll take it off when gently cruising down a green or a flat area, but otherwise, always.

it is strange though, thinking that when i was little and learning to ski, it was unheard of to wear a helmet.

I wouldn't dream of going riding with out a helmet.

I wear a full face for big mountain now after biting through my own knee.

As first person said. id be well and truely retarded if i didnt wear one with my luck.

it depends for me. almost every day in the park ill use one. However if its just a chill day and not doin much, i can see myself not using one in the park. I normally dont ever wear it though when im in the powder or teaching; just gets in the way then.

Always. I just feel vulnerable without one, not to mention that I'd be dead or brain damaged had I not worn one in the past.

I have no doubt that I would be dead if I hadn't been wearing a helmet when I got a severe concussion while downhilling. I have always worn one, but that just reinforced my reasoning. Plus, with all of the new designs and styles, helmets aren't as aesthetically awkward as some people make them out to be...I feel worse not wearing a helmet...good use of my 500th post

Have you ever heard of CR Johnson, he died and he didnt wear a helmet once and i screwed him over so yes. And t-wall does in the urban and he makes dank pretzels so you know it

I never did and thought they were stupid for a long time. Then I went to Whistler and needed one to ride the high level park, so I bought one. I ended up hitting my head pretty hard twice that day, but was fine thanks to the helmet. Ever since then I wear it all the time.

I have video (go watch show and prove) of CR wearing a helmet. RIP regardless.


Also to everyone whose excuse is "its too heavy/clunky etc" go spend 130 bucks and buy a smith maze. It's extremely light and I was lucky enough to pick one up off Collin Collins and it was the best 30 bucks I've ever spent. It will probably end up saving my life.

still not wearing one. thought about getting a helmet last year - didn't happen. bought a go pro for this year, though about getting a helmet for it, but i decided to just get the chest mount instead. so it's looking like this will be another helmet free winter.

Bad call on the trees man, I close lined myself once in quebec in the trees. Took a large branch off my forehead. Took 14 stitches to fix and now my head is so oddly shaped hahah. I ALWAYS wear a helmet when I ride now, I didnt up until like 5 years ago but Ive had minor concussions and am not doing that again.

But it only takes once and you don't get another day, i feel ya cause i don't always, and i havn't had a near death expirience with one that i can look to.  But still its the just the risk pretty much outweighs any negative aspects.

question:  If you don't currently wear a helmet, what would prompt you to wear one?  better design?  lighter weight?  graphics?  venting?  comfort?    Obviously a big wreck might prompt you to wear one, but apart from that, what are the biggest factors you take into account when thinking about buying a helmet?

i never wear a helmet.

the only exception is in comps that require them.

they dont look good, they get in the way, and personally i find them extremely uncomfortable and more of a nuisance than anything.

Quebec lifestyle, I always have one.

But it's okay, I feel good with it and I know it's a good thing. It doesn't bother me at all.

I would stilll wear one even if I wasn't obligated.

Really? I never ski trees without a helmet unless I'm skiing with my grandfather or teaching somebody. So many times I've been thankful for it too.

I wear a helmet 90% of the time.

I always wear a helmet. It seems like the risk of getting a severe dome injury isnt worth "looking cool". It's like wearing a seatbelt in a car. Its a small hassle, but if you get into an accident without it, you can be seriously hurt.

I always wear a helmet except for small jumps we make around town or mellow pow days. I wore them from day 1, and am so glad I did. I can think of so many occasions where I hit my head off trees or boxes/rails where I would've been quite hurt if I wasn't.

there's always something on the mountain to be jibbed, there are always sidebooters to huck your shit.

when im not in the park im always jumpin around the whole mountain so i always wear one. plus theres really no reason not to. (except price arguably)

always, i've only skied without a helmet when at the whaleback summer setup, and on a day where i was dying of the heat. only two times in my life. i'd rather keep the brain in good shape,

and to the guy who says helmets sever brainstems; if you wear them right, it won't be in that position. its as simple as using the product the way it is meant to be used.

Always... I've taken some pretty decent hits to my head with a helmet on and they definitely rattled me... I hate to think of how it would have turned out if I hadn't been wearing one. The risks are just too great to not wear a helmet - anyone remember that one celebrity who died about a day after hitting her head on the BUNNY HILL? It wasn't even a hard fall or anything - she got right back up. As for why I wear one? Well when I first started skiing my dad forced me to wear one or else he wouldn't let me ski... At the time I thought it was stupid but damn I'm definitely glad that he did.

Yes a i wear a helmet because:

1. Parents have always basically made me
2. i feel more comfortable doing harder tricks with it on
3. keeps you just as warm
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY- i have experienced post concussion syndrome and was sideline for almost a whole season and it is by far the worst inury i have ever had. although the symptoms arnt painful they fucking suck feeling dizzy, tired, and overall helpless everyday and not being able to ski. so i will always wear a helmet
