What is the direction of the net force on a book sliding on a table if the book is slowing down?

back up the table. cus its slowing down so more force is pushing against it. idk im answering it like its a trick question because logically you would think it is the direction the book is traveling.

the book is slowing down due to friction which is not a net force from side to side. there is not acceleration acting on the book that's pushing it left but there is a force that originally pushed the book towards the right. if you say the net force is going towards the left, that is assuming that ultimately the book will slow down, stop, and begin traveling in the opposite direction

Assuming the table is flat, there are no external forces acting on it besides gravity and friction (like someone pushing it). This means we have 2 forces

at any moment in time the net force(sum of forces) on the book will be to the right until it comes to a complete stop, at which point the net force=0.

all i'm saying is there's no acceleration pushing the book towards the left. i said friction is a force, it's just not a side to side force when you draw those little net force diagrams with the arrows and boxes

wrong, as is Gator.

The book may in fact be moving to the right, but it is accelerating to the left (decelerating to the right). Force is in the direction of acceleration. The force is to the left (assuming the book moves to the right).

net force is always in the direction as acceleration and if it is slowing down than accelration is negative (to the left) thus net force is negative.

yeah okay i took intro to physics and we just built shit and i got a 98. that class failed me for real physics stuff, i bullshat my way through the tests and somehow didnt fail

Try thinking about it differently. The acceleration isn't pushing the block towards the left, but the FRICTION FORCE is ACCELERATING the block to the left (it is slowing it down in the direction to the right). You also would draw the friction force on a free body diagram.

the net force is in the other direction that the book is traveling because friction is greater than Fapp (lol i said fap) and friction is in the other direction
